Has anyone else noticed that there are some super-hot warrior chicks on this forum LOL?
  • Profile picture of the author Kay King
There are some - but there are also some great looking female avatars that belong to male marketers. Don't get too drooly.

Why would a male use a female avatar or photo? Because there are a few who get carried away with the idea they are talking to a gorgeous female. Some guys are so gullible.

As for the real females here - they are marketers, not chicks.

You're not hip with the lingo, Kay King. They're either "Babes," "Chicks," or (my personal favourite) "B*tches."

Yes of course there can be some lovely ladies in any department but when you start to refer to them as chicks then you open up a can of worms which as you can see from the response on here most women don't like to be referred to in such a way (sexist springs to mind)

The ladies on this forum are far from chick status (attractive yes, chicks no)

It's a very male shovanist suggest which has got the response it deserves.

True story - months ago there was a fairly new member posting here with a beautiful photo as an avatar.

The posts were "poor silly me - can you help" and the number of answers to the simplistic questions was astounding. People were offering to help and work by PM and skype and phone...what a great group. I did notice several references in answers to the attractiveness of the new female marketer here.

It felt "off" to me so I did a bit of detective work - and turns out the person being fawned over was a Malaysian male who was about as wide as he was tall. He sure did know how to post "girly" though

You may be right, but the problem is in the context in which it was delivered. He's not sitting in a bar talking with his buddies, he's in a public forum where professionalism is considered an asset. While the off topic room is more relaxed than the rest of the forum, that doesn't preclude that one can drool over other members with impunity.

Indeed, then the statement can easily be misinterpreted as objectifying women or something else quite untoward, depending on how it's viewed.

Of course, the term "chick", in so far as I understand it. Is a young and hip way of describing a young (also hip) and attractive female. So really, a "Marketer Chick", is just a young, trendy attractive female marketer. As opposed to a "domestic fowl bred for flesh and eggs".

By definition: "chick" (as opposed to the common fowl's offspring) is just a slang term which simply refers to a young woman. I was wrong to say it describes women, it can't. However informal it is, the term "chick" on its own does not seem very offensive.

Using informal slang where a degree of profesionalism is required, then I can understand why it can be viewed as being derogatory, it is highly dismissive in that sense.

I'm sure some of the ladies out there are aware of the "chick-flick" - movies aimed at young women, of course. I've still to witness a movement where that term has to be changed into something like "movies for young women who have high moral values"... just because "chick-flick" was deemed too offensive

Who said men don't notice women's beauty? Of course we do. I also notice when someone is wearing clothing that doesn't match, but I don't comment about it in public. There's a saying derived from Shakespeare, "discretion is the better part of valor," that could be taken to mean you'd be better off to keep some things to yourself than to blurt them out in public. This is one of those things, IMO, as it shows poor judgment and an inability to discern the appropriateness of a comment within a particular setting.

I wouldn't say so. If one person kept picking on another over and over, you might call that bullying. For 10 different people to state their opinion, then that's a forum being what a forum is -- a place for discussion that often includes a difference of opinion. That's why most of us try to use good judgment in what we write.

If you'll excuse me for a moment while I try to explain my view...

Please look up the word chick for its informal slang definition. It will say (sorry to stress this but I must) that it is a noun (therefore, it cannot be used as a descriptive term used to describe women) used to refer to a young, attractive female etc. This same noun is used in chick-flicks or flicks for "chicks" - which is why I said what I said. It's simply a label to group together certain types of films and has very little use as a descriptive term. It does not describe these films nor can it be used to describe women in a derogatory fashion. This is just my opinion too!

Since "chick-flick" is coined by Hollywood and the movie genre is very mainstream - then of course the modern term for "chick" will have glamour, beauty and popularity, sexy and sassy inferred upon it. Using this as a modern example, it is proof of its common acceptance as a non-offensive informal slang term, functioning simply as a stereotypical reference towards young females who are thought of as being attractive.

Have you seen the leading females in these "chick-flicks" - they're all young classy females - "chicks", by definition. Katherine Heigle (27 Dresses), Anne Hathaway (Bride Wars) to name but a few. These women are the standard for what the modern day "chick" really infers - in my humble opinion...

Seriously, if a female has "chick-status", in my view, you-should-ever-be-so-lucky to get her to look in your direction nevermind a date!

I'm sure some of the ladies out there are aware of the "chick-flick" - movies aimed at young women, of course. I've still to witness a movement where that term has to be changed into something like "movies for young women who have high moral values"... just because "chick-flick" was deemed too offensive
Sounds officious - you really don't get it.

Not a lady, girl, chick, babe or any other descriptive cutesy phrase. Just female, woman or marketer will do - thank you very much.

You can use whatever terms you please - but using them on a marketing forum where you are trying to build credibility will hurt you. You can defend all you want - but don't be surprised if women marketers have no interest in buying from or working with a marketer who uses such terms.

If oogling avatars is your thing, do it on a dating forum where that activity is considered acceptable.

So what you're saying is, that a woman who is thought of as having "chick-status" lessens her ability to be taken seriously within her given profession and is seen then as being secondary to men rather then being their equal?

As it's percieved as lowering a woman's value in the workplace - in this case, this marketing forum - aswell as ruining the credibility of a working partnership, it is then deemed derogatory?

Nothing against you, but "young and hip" it ain't. Young women have been called "chicks" by young men for at least 50 years. Probably longer, but my memory doesn't go back much farther.

            It's "retro" at best.

Nobody said it was acceptable; just that it exists.

What's funny is that so many folks seem to go ga-ga over an avatar. That's really plumbing new shallows of superficiality.

To say that men don't notice women's beauty, or judge them "superficially" (on some level) simply wouldn't be true.

Although that's probably because we think with our brains till a certain level of attractiveness and then switch over to a completely different organ which fails to notice these superficial minutiae (or pretty much anything at all!)

                        Exactly.

I've been hit on via PM by several male members. Believe me, it doesn't convey a professional impression at all. The guys who did it didn't go on my "consider for future JV partners" list.

Besides, to the guys still tempted to ogle hot chicks, for all you know, the "hot chick" from the USA you think you're hitting on is a forty-year-old guy living in the Philippines or a gay woman who wouldn't be interested anyway or a professional female marketer who has gotten a life and is in a relationship in that life.

The context is a marketing forum. That doesn't change.

It is your thread though, as you said. If you don't care about the perception you're creating, if being able to say what you want is more important to you than decorum and professionalism, then good luck with your IM career ... you might need it.

I can also see that this thread was opened just simply to compliment what lovely ladies that we have on this forum.

I think everything that needs to be said has been said and let's move on as the reason why i came to this forum was simply because the knowledge that you guys have and the friendlyness of the warriors will for sure help me to progress.

I just turned 56. If anyone ever calls me "chick" again in my lifetime it will be a major compliment..........
But I just have to notice that the guys in this forum really need to start getting out more.
When they want to know "how women think" about something, they amass major threads of men deciding that women groupthink and what the rules are.
When one decides they have the perfect answer to marketing to women, they post it and the thread attracts pages of men talking about how women think and what "we" like.
They seem to never think of talking to the women about it.
Obviously, though, they are paying attention to the pictures, even if not our words.

    Now it's the avatars.

Good grief. Guys -- you need to get off the computer for a day and spend some time with your wives or girlfriends - or go ask someone out if you have neither. IM is making you all freaking bonkers.

That said - if you think that's not the truth - look for threads from women talking about male "groupthink" that ends up being full of women chattering about what men want, need, like, or think. Usually if we want to know what a man thinks......we just ask a man.
We notice men's avatar's too. If a pic is attractive, it's attractive --- but you don't see us posting all over about the forum beefcake and this same thread comes up about every three or four months.

Why don't we make threads like these? Because when our brains go to hormone mush we usually shut off the computer for awhile and indulge in some real life.

    You should try it sometime.

I don't like it when anyone says "all" of any group engages in a given behavior. In most cases, sweeping generalizations like that are seldom correct, are easily disproved, and represent lazy thinking.

I'm just wondering though, if the roles were reversed and the female marketers did start having a good "oogle" while unashamedly posting it in public.. "Ooo, check out that 100% specimen of prime beef!" etc (I'm actually starting to think some of the females actually just think of men as pieces of desirable flesh, should they prove to be desirable - generally speaking)

Would the the response be the same?

LOL - that's a two and a half year old pic. So that's two and a half years less of a compliment/smoozsh or however you meant it.
Seeings how I have a website about skin care and weight control - I'm gonna take it and run with it, though.

There used to be this smooch smilie that I wanted to paste after that statement but it's gone now and all that's there is one with a tongue, and somehow that might be a little bit creepy (just as is this thread) so I'm just gonna use these:

The word "chick" for young woman doesn't bother me one whit. Women used to be called "hens" for various reasons - when they nagged or talked all at once in a group, etc -- and chicks was just a spin off from that, but by the time I was in high school it was just a colloquialism, and to be honest - I still use it now and again. I've also been known to say "far-out" and "right-on" here and there.

I really think we get too caught up in these things. If there's something else good being said when the word is used, why worry about it (example: that chick is one mean copywriter) - come on - would you really be upset if that was said just because of the stupid little tag that has melted beyond its original meaning?

But getting a voova for the avatars in a business forum? Now that's strange no matter how you word it. LMAO

...Oh, I see what I think has happenned.

Basically, there's been a very naive infringement upon the basic values and principles which this forum upholds(understandably applied in real life too).

Irrespective of the male versus female "slugfest" (this is just a "gimmick" which will perpetuate this thread and others like it into oblivion).

Others have just interpreted the response as an overreaction, giving the OP a false "representation" and naturally a sense of injustice followed.

      HeySal,

I agree with your remarks. Being almost 55 myself, I don't mind being thought of as attractive, if indeed someone thinks that. I think the problem is we baby boomer gals grew up in a generation, where we were still being reduced to our looks, and how well we were trained in the domestic arena, not by everyone, but many, where we felt like like we were being dismissed, if we were ambitious and wanted to do something.

I was a stay at home Mom, so I was very domestic, but I have always had the drive to be successful as a home biz owner and to be an entrepreneur.
I have really appreciated the Warrior Forum, as I have seen it as the great equalizer, where the female Warriors are taken seriously, and are included in the arena of business and sharing ideas, and encouraged the same as everyone else to make our businesses a success.

Just my 2 cents of course!

Never mind - you probably wouldn't understand...

That's ok- I don't understand all of it either. As far as I can tell, some "teen" guys call women "chicks" but that may be due to lack of first hand knowledge of the species if you know what I mean.

As women - we don't much like being called "chicks" when we are on a working forum so we respond by discussing "normal members" which probably makes those same young'uns giggle.

Makes you want to shout "fart" and see who cracks up, doesn't it?

Good point, HeySal. Often it's about the "context" in which a phrase or word is being used.

From what I can tell this was all started by the OP using the word "chicks".

If he had used "women" (as he should have) I don't think this thread would have blown up to this extent.

To all you ladies who suggest that this is a "professional" forum and dating behavior shouldn't be part of it.... STOP.

You know as well as I that "dating behavior" happens everywhere. Night clubs, grocery stores, bars, and yes, even "professional" environments such as law firms, hospitals, software companies, marketing companies, military squadrons, the FAA, SEC, FBI, CIA etc. etc. etc.

            Well said, Kevin.

Sometimes women can be fickle. When it's a "hot guy" (or whatever) that's checking them out, they can't get enough. However, when it's an "average guy" suddenly they don't like it. (Haha)

So yeah, I don't really understand them either.

I have a theory that it's the less attractive women who don't like women being called “chicks/babes/whatever” ... (It's just a theory though.)

To all you ladies who suggest that this is a "professional" forum and dating behavior shouldn't be part of it.... STOP.

You know as well as I that "dating behavior" happens everywhere. Night clubs, grocery stores, bars, and yes, even "professional" environments such as law firms, hospitals, software companies, marketing companies, military squadrons, the FAA, SEC, FBI, CIA etc. etc. etc.

LOL yes, i certainly didnt think the thread would get this much attention or spark such in-depth debates.

I want to formally apologize for any misunderstanding as I meant this thread to be a compliment to all the beautiful women here!

        Hey Kay,

Just wanted to point out something. One of the things that keeps coming up in this thread is the dislike of generalizations. However, you have two big generalizations here.

One is that only a teenage guy who is bad with women would ever call a woman a chick. I can argue that I have seen guys of various ages and "experience" call women chicks. Yes, it tends to be younger men (under 30 or 35), but not always. As for them being inexperienced, I can't help but say there is just not much of a pattern here...

The other generalization is that all women hate being called a chick. In this thread alone multiple women have said that they don't mind being called a chick. Some said they see it as a complement. I understand that you don't like it, but that is your feelings, not the feelings of every woman on this forum.

As for the big question "Is it acceptable to call a woman a chick on a marketing forum?", I can only say one thing. There are multiple generations, and therefore multiple sets of professional rules being looked at here. Yes, this is a business forum. Yes, this is the "laid-back" off topic section (I think of the break room in a office). According to one set of rules, it is somewhat acceptable, and according to another set of rules it is not. We each just have to realize that not everyone has the same set of rules that we (ourselves) have.

I'm trying to think of the last time I used the word 'chicks' to refer to women, and the only thing I can think of is singing "At The Hop" by Danny & The Juniors.

"All the cats and chicks/can get their kicks/at the hop"

Other than that, it's when I was a teenager.

So, if you're a teenager, or just a swingin' cat stuck in the 1950s, then feel free to use the word, but feel free to get used to the raised eyebrows that will ensue.

But it is also about context, and this isn't the time or place for such words, or to talk about your getting off on an avatar made of a few hundred pixels. You may think you're being cute, funny or clever, but what you really may doing is creating a negative image that could have a serious impact on the future of your business.

That being said, I'm not a female so I can't offer the same insights, BUT I'm also smart enough to pay attention to what a group of people has to say about what labels they find acceptable and unacceptable.

    All the best,
    Michael

Don't be an arse and try to flip something you clearly have no knowledge of against me.

I regret to announce that the "chicks" have gone to pick some nuts.

I think some folks have to be reminded that they are all virtual chicks. Do not be deceived!
