My two cents, coming from conversations I had with very succesful women...

You don't see them in the spotlight because many actually do feel threatened by the exposure. It's a sick world we live in, and while most of us wouldn't think twice about having our names out there, women are often a lot more wary of it with all the psychos out there.

Add in the fact that you're perceived as a guru, a top-earner with a lot of money, and you just attract even more wackos.

For most, it's just not worth the risk when they can make a killing from the shadows.

Heck, as long as they can afford new shoes they're happy.

      Agreed. :p

There's plenty of female marketers. I'd venture a guess and say that they tend to stick to the small or medium successes -- steady, consistent income -- rather than go for big, expensive, flashy product launches that could enrich or bankrupt them.

I know I'm the same way. I'd rather make a few thousand a month in totally passive income and be free to travel, study, learn, and do whatever the heck I want than be chained to the computer day in and day out for years to become known as a guru so I can make thousands overnight in a product launch.

Wow! One of the few people I've heard who has exactly the same attitude towards earning money online that I do!

It took me years to get my content sites earning enough to survive on but now I'm earning a very comfortable living with sites that take me about 15 minutes per day to maintain.

I still work 20-30 hours most weeks but the bulk of that time is to add additional content that will result in ever higher earnings in the future. My existing pages just keep right on earning year after year with almost no upkeep. And when I want to take a day or a week or a month off, the money just keeps on rolling in!

It comes as no surprise to me that women make good internet marketers. Women tend to be more socially oriented than men and internet marketing has many social aspects to it. I think we guys tend to be more drawn to technology so we dominated online business at first but that's been changing for a while now and as time goes by I'd bet that the number of women earning their living online will continue to grow and possibly even surpass us guys at some point.

Good to hear that such a lifestyle is possible and that I'm not alone in wanting it. I can make a living from writing if I have to, but I'd rather focus my energies on creating a website empire for the time being. :p

There is no lack of women, you're just not noticing them.

No offense, but what does the gender of a marketer have to do with anything? Either you're good at marketing, or you're not. Male or female doesn't matter. Generally (VERY generally) speaking, men and women each have diffrrent strengths, each of which can help them sell, even though it may be in different ways.

I'm sorry, I just really don't know how to take your post. Even a quick glance at the forum would tell you there are plenty of women in IM. Seriously. Besides, this subject has been posted several times, so I don't see how it can add anything to the discussion.

Okay, perhaps you meant this to just be a fun thread, if so, then so be it. But then it will probably be better received in the Off Topic section.

To be fair, while I don't get why it matters, I have no problem with people posting whatever they want.

he: Great image - I'm going to start a thread about it - I'm going to PM Kevin about it - I'm going to find another image to post

she: hmmm - maybe I'll create a diet plan that uses images to limit appetite - could be a big seller

As Michael said, we have nothing to measure or a need to appear superior. Beating our chests hurts so we avoid that.too. We are consistently referred to as "the weaker sex" but only a tiny percentage of members posting "help me" or "show me" or "I need/want" or "I can't" are women. Doesn't sound too weak to me.

Gender doesn't matter online - there are a few old boys clubs left but they are meaningless as we aren't interested in joining them anyway

I see them EVERYWHERE. One third of my Twitter stream is filled with tweets by women. The ratio is almost the same on Facebook.

Just this morning, I bought and read a fascinating ebook, "Pink & Grow Rich" (by @invincibelle on Twitter) which is all about Women Marketers.

About 10 years ago, there were very few. Today, there are many of them - and they teach some pretty valuable lessons to anyone who cares to study 'em!

    Because it's impersonal and money-focused.

Culturally, pretty much every country on the planet actively encourages women to be involved with the formation and maintenance of relationships with real people in person.

That's not internet marketing. It's offline PR.

And if you go look at offline PR, you'll find that many of the most respected companies are owned, staffed, and operated almost entirely by women.

Both internet marketing and offline PR use roughly the same techniques, tactics, and principles. If you're good at one, you will almost certainly be similarly good at the other.

But sales and marketing are much older professions than PR. They're professions which have, traditionally, been male-dominated and male-controlled.

PR as a profession, however, has a history stretching back only to the first world war. Its first code of ethics was drafted in 1950. And the first major convention of PR firms was in 1978. So PR came into its own as a respectable and desirable career path at roughly the same time women were coming into their own as respectable and desirable career people.

So because the disciplines involved were so similar, it was inevitably easier for a woman to succeed in the reasonably new field of PR than in the well-established and heavily-sexist field of sales and marketing.

Hence, not so many women in marketing... but an awful lot of them in PR.

This post is funny for two reasons.

First, women are the online shoppers in the US, so it seems like women would be much more successful in IM than their male counterpart.

Second, I'm a computer engineer by trade, and I graduated in a class with no women and have not seen a woman in my workplace in the longest time.

Just funny. Thanks for the laugh

This is a perfect example of why you have to be careful when forming opinions based on statistics.

While I definitely believe that women are every bit as capable of making money as men, earning money and controlling money are not the same thing.

Another factor that might have an effect on that statistic is that women live longer than men and end out their final years with all of the wealth that both they and their husband's earned during their entire lifetimes.

According to Wikipedia, women in the U.S. currently live 5.2 years longer than men on average.
