Hi There-
I'm at that time of year again where I'm looking to escape winter.
I am looking for a country that has inexpensive living and is above 60 F.
I have been thinking about Fiji but I don't think the internet is very good there. I have also thought about going to the Philippines.

In your opinion what is a good country to go to for the winter where there is good internet and good culture?

That country is on my list. I had a friend who spent a whole year in Malaysia and traveled to Thailand.

If I was in your position, why not something like Panama. Being tax free would be a nice place to start. Not sure what other offerings there are in Panama or how the internet connections are. A bad internet connection would sure be a deal breaker in choosing, marketers need to have access to their data.

    Best,

    Ross

I lived in Costa Rica a few years ago and didn't have a chance to visit Panama but I bet its great. It is defiantly the least expensive choice. From Chicago to Panama one way it is only $100 with Spirit airline. The cost of living there is around $500-$700 a month. If I decide to stay in this hemisphere it is my top choice.

I think Hong Kong is pretty good place too. South Vietnam is also good place but sometimes it can be too hot, like 30c. Internet in Vietnam is not fast tho but standard living is cheap. Also Taiwan is a pretty good place too.

I am in Hong Kong and am surprised to hear about this. Just wait until you see our property prices and rent, which is now either the most or second most expensive city in the world. Not to mention if you if you want to run a car, it will cost at least $250 to rent a car park space. To buy a car park space outright would cost between $35000 to $120000.

I think it depends on what you consider "good" internet access. I have DSL here in BC, and it is relatively slow, but certainly faster than dialup. It is workable.

Internet access in Panama City is absolutely first-rate. Unfortunately, it is pretty hot there, very, very busy and relatively expensive (but the OP never said where he was comparing "expense" to - so, cheaper than London, but more expensive than Philippines). Some of the nicer towns in Panama (like Boquete, Contadora Island, Cerro Azul, Cerro Punta, Volcan etc.) have more moderate weather and much lower prices, but generally poor/slow internet service.

I have never been there, but friends raved about Cuenca, Ecuador. Situated somewhere in the high Andean plain, it has perpetual late-spring weather (low 70's all year I was told, although cooler at night). My friends raved about how inexpensive and pretty and historic it was. Good dinners are like $2, taxi rides were $1, etc. Again, internet appears slow (and apparently takes months to get hooked up).

Bangkok also has internet access difficulties that you will have to factor in if you are considering it - and it is also very hot, humid, crowded and smoggy.

Montevideo, Uruguay, is a very cosmopolitan city with lower living costs and year-round warm weather (again, second hand info from friends). It has first rate internet service available, along with excellent medical service and low crime. Taxes are based on property ownership rather than income, so you would save there too.

Buenos Aires, Argentina is a very exciting and warm-weather city, and apparently you can find a lot of bargains there too. Also good internet available.

I would imagine that with the recent economic conditions you should be able to find a lot of places in Greece, Portugal and maybe even Spain and Italy that are relatively inexpensive and offer good internet, along with very good weather most of the time.

    Good luck!

    G

I too have heard excellent things about both Cuenca, Ecuador and Montevideo, Uruguay. If I were a single person with no responsibilities I'd be on my way there now, lol.
