How did this blog get the no.1 rank?

I've been wondering how this guy got the no.1 spot on google for the keywords cool stuff which gets 20k hits a month . The only 2 reasons are because of his url and the age of his blog? What do you think?

Listed in DMOZ directory
listed in Yahoo directory
212,417 Alexa Rank
Well optimized for the targeted keyword and the related keywords.
If you can much those numbers, you too can rank 1st for any keyword.

  I agree with the other posters that backlinks have a lot to do with it. Especially since it out ranks with site using the actual "cool stuff" keywords in it's domain. So the backlinks was the final blow to get on top.
  
  I didn't check for the quality of the links or the content of the site since that might determine it's durability at #1.

It is an older blog which REALLY helps and he has a lot of back links. These really add weight over time.
