The latest Transparency International Corruption Perception Index is out.
Transparency International - the global coalition against corruption

Singapore is tied for 1st for being the least corrupt country. I guess that is another reason why so many internet marketers go to live there.

Also one of the most strict countries.

Is chewing gum still banned there?

And wasnt there a story about an american getting cane whipped for doing something.

Not that I am against cane whipping, its certainly cheaper than locking people up and giving them free food and shelter.

Yes, caning is a pushishment meted out in Singapore. I was thinking that for a country to have a anti-corruption policy in place is a great way to market to the world. Just like with IM. When there is a reputation for honesty, customers build a trust in your product and in the products you market. It is great for business.

I mentioned this to my son, who in business finance, and he said a lot of banks will not allow transactions from New Zealand (one of the top three tied for first place on the list) because of the high rate of money laundering that goes on there. I wonder what criteria was used for this study.

This is what their website says about their data sources,

          A. DATA SOURCES TO CALCULATE THE CPI

          1. All sources of information used to construct the CPI are produced by reputable organisations and data gathering organisations. To be included in the CPI, a source must measure the overall extent of corruption (frequency and/or size of corrupt transactions) in the public and political sectors and provide a ranking of countries, that is to say, measure perceptions of corruption in at least a few different countries. Also, the methodology used to assess these perceptions has to be the same for all assessed countries in order for the source to be selected. The number of surveys/assessments included might vary from one year to another depending on their availability at the time of the development of the index.

The CPI 2010 is calculated using data from 13 different surveys or assessments produced by the following 10 independent organisations2:

          1. Africa Development Bank- Country Policy and Institutional Assessments 2009 (AFDB 2009)
          2. Asian Development Bank -Country Performance Assessment Ratings 2009 (ADB 2009)
          3. Bertelsmann Foundation- Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BF 2009)
          4. Economist Intelligence Unit -Country Risk Service and Country Forecast 2009 (EIU 2010)
          5. Freedom House -Nations in Transit 2009 (FH 2010)
          6. Global Insights, formerly World Markets Research Centre- Country Risk Ratings 2009 (GI 2010)
          7. Institute for Management Development - World Competitiveness Report 2009 and 2010 (IMD 2009 and IMD 2010)
          8. Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, Hong Kong - Asian Intelligence 2009 and 2010 (PERC 2009 and PERC 2010).
          9. World Economic Forum - Global Competitiveness Report 2009 and 2010 (WEF 2009 and WEF 2010)
          10. World Bank - Country Policy and Institutional Assessments for IDA Countries (WB 2009)

      Hey dude

You are right! Singapore is still one of the strictest country around! And also, chewing gum is still banned here.

Yeah I noticed they are still strict on certain things. I think I'm ok with the cane whipping as long as the it's a bad offense.

This is quite interesting, but not too surprising. What was a little bit surprising was how far down the list the U.S. was - 21 countries are LESS corrupt than us.

You know I kinda think Chris is right.

I have never heard of anyone moving to Singapore just be they are "least corrupt".

Oh and by the way, the last country I will move to is Singapore. I only got caned a couple of times in school when I was in Pakistan and I hated that so bad that I am not going close to anywhere caning is legal. HECK NO

Lol Afaq, you made canning seems like a norm in Singapore. Singapore is indeed very strict in almost all matters and the government imposed a lot of control over the citizens.

Don't worry about being canned if you are not up to no good there!

      Cheers

There has been many threads on these forums of Americans and Brits who had moved to Singapore.

I was only joking about people moving there because of less corruption, i just thought it was interesting.

I really don't think those studies and any other have much reliability of you don't know the source and other "reliability" variables.

If somebody funded the survey, what was the "hidden" purpose of the study?

If it was a grant, did the grantmaker permit a different answer than was originally supported?

Then there is culture. What is corruption for one culture may not be for another.

For example, in my country (Puerto Rico) it is not permitted for a political elected Officer to hire more than one family member into his/her office. I understand that there is a country where political officers are expected to hire most of their family members into their offices.

Two family members is corruption in my country.

Two family members is denigrating in the other culture. He/she should have more family members.

There was a culture in ancient times where youths were beaten when caught stealing, not because they were stealing, but because they let themselves being caught. Stealing wasn't a crime, being caught was.

If you say that a country is more or less corrupted, how do they compare?

Did you ask each country's residents or upon your observations?

And then, how much information was hidden?

Many master's and doctoral degrees students are not permitted in some agencies because they usually find data that is disturbing for the officers in those agencies if that data goes public.

      What is corruption?

      Sincerely,

      Antonios

Oddly enough, they advocate a U.N. response (or adoption of anti-corruption laws suggested by the U.N.)

Last time I checked, the UN was pretty nasty corrupt.

That is a bit odd. Maybe because it is so strict or just because their economy is so strong that they have to keep business clean.

I lived and worked in Singapore for a good part of 2007.

Another fellow internet marketer, who use to live here in Japan moved his whole family and business operation down there a little over a year ago.

    Awesome place.
    • Super food.
    • Warm and sunny year round. No winter.
    • Bar-none the CLEANEST country I've ever visited - and I've been to a lot.
    • Everything's in English.
    • VERY, VERY business-friendly!
    • Extremely smart, young and motivated population.
    • Central location makes hopping around to other Asian countries cheap, fast and easy.

Downside (for me) - super-crowded, no space for a quiet house on the ricefield like I have now.
