I think John summed it up rather well. I think Ricky has started to go a little to far, even with his stand up shows. On the other hand celebs tend to think they are above being laughed at.

Tired of being treated like a spoiled self-obsessed Hollywood prima donna, Billy Bob Thornton behaves like a spoiled self-obsessed Hollywood prima donna.

This is what he does. Why book him if they don't want what he's got?

He'll probably be found upside down hanging from the bathroom ceiling with a L Ron Hubbard book shoved down his throat.

Okay, I watched the monologue and I've seen worse.

As was already mentioned, they knew what they were getting when they
hired the guy so I don't see what the big deal is.

Oh well, back to more important things.

Self obsessed is a good description. What other industry celebrates and rewards/awards itself so many times per year?

It's extremely difficult to take anything they say or do seriously...

They hired a wit and then were upset when the wit was sharp? Silly people.

"I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed [the Sex and the City 2] poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza."
I didn't see the show - but that's funny! There is nothing odder to me than the things celebrities think you will believe - unless it's the number in the public who do believe that stuff. If plastic surgery and airbrushing were prohibited...there would be chaos in la la land.

I'm sorry I didn't watch the show - it would have cracked me up.

I predict the next show will be in namby-pamby land.

Not much different than the jokes that would be told on Leno or Letterman. Just because these stars are in the room as he is saying it?

Gervais' act would be perfectly acceptable in the UK, because "knocking people off of their perch" is a national sport here: Tall poppy syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the US, where success seems to be celebrated rather than resented, I'd imagine that the act is much less acceptable.

However, I've seen a trend over the last few years: US TV companies hiring Brits like Anne Robinson, Gordon Ramsey, Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan to be shamelessly rude/mean to other people. Perhaps American presenters wouldn't stoop so low.

I rather see Gervais with a few hard jabs at some celebs than Queen Latifah who hosted some show the other day and was horrible. I thought Ricky was funny and people are just to uptight now a days.

I find Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan refreshing - I enjoy both of them.

It doesn't seem Gervais got all that much criticism. The worst came from some pretty high-and-haughty columnists and from the always-huffyton post. Most people who were in the audience later claimed they loved the humor.

I doubt Gervais broke a sweat about it.
