Bears vs. Packers Game of the Year

The Bears vs. Packers NFC Championship Game

The Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers are the longest rivalry in the entire NFL having played each other 182 times in almost 100 years.

Believe it or not, this is the first time they have met in the Playoffs since just after Pearl Harbor attack back in 1941!

Many locals sports announcers in Chicago are calling this the biggest sporting event in the City of Chicago's history! That's saying alot.

Any NFL fans here who want to vote who they think will win?

I'm from central IL and obviously a Bears fan.

Cheers,
Zac

Even though the Bears are #2 seed, I think the Packers will take it. Not by 7 perhaps...

I'm clearly voting with my heart but I have to go with the Bears!

The two regular season games were both really close games. The Packers will contend they could have won the first game if it were not for the number of penalties. The Bears will contend they could have won the second game if they were running a full game plan (which we could debate whether they were or not.)

It all boils down to what should be a great game. I'd like to see Forte and the O-line pound it at the Packers, using the pass game much more sparingly than they did in the last game.

      My prediction - Ditka 474, Packers 3

Nice to see a "superfan" posting. LOL

Yes the new overtime rules could definitely come into play here.

Would be perfect if Hester nullified them by returning the OT kickoff. :p

        Getting close now.

Fortunately there is the Blackhawks game on right now to offer a reasonable distraction while waiting for the football game to start. But this has been one of the longest mornings in recent memory.

The closer it gets the longer it seems.

Speaking of going with the heart, I'll go with the Steelers too.
That one, I have to admit, not to sure.

The last time the Jets talked this much (doody), Joe Namath was there.
      Remember that one?

      What the heck, Packers, Steelers.

Steelers no spread, it is three and a half, Steelers (last time I checked). Stand by Packers by 7.

    Packers win by 10.

    Yes I'm a sore loser.

I'm guessing Jets now in the second game.

The Packers outplayed the Bears, that's why the Bears lost -- not because the Bears played their second and third string quarterbacks.

The fact is, the Bears didn't do ANYTHING with their starting QB in there. He sucked about as much a QB can suck. The Packers had him completely stoned. The only reason the Bears had a chance at the end is because of the third string quarterback, not in spite of him.

Nice job picking the Jets though.

      Enjoy your sour grapes.

You're absolutely correct that the Bears were only in the game because they rallied behind the play of their 3rd string QB (who really should have been 2nd on the depth charts but that is a story for another day.) Had Cutler remained in the game, I highly doubt we as Bears fans would have had as much hope for a comeback.

It was a fun game to watch and had an exciting finish. Obviously I wish the outcome had been different but nothing we can do about that.

          Well,

Aaron Rogers wasn't exactly superman the second half himself.

Zero second half offensive points. What did he end up with, a 58 point QB rating?

I agree Hainie should have been #2. But I would have taken a healthy Cutler the entire second half over either obviously.

And yes, Jay did miss numerous scoring chances in the first half. Quite frankly if he would have been on his game I think we would have seen a completely different game.

We'll do it again a couple of times next year as always.

          Cheers,

The Packers beat the Bears twice at Soldier Field in Chicago this year, once to make the playoffs and once for the Conference Championship. If the Packers suck, what does that say about the Bears?

55.4 to be exact. I'll take it when the opposing quarterback (Cutler) is only 31.2 though. I give the Bears defense credit for taking him off his game after the first quarter. I have no problem giving credit where credit is due.

You want to know the difference in the game? Special teams and defense. The Packers punter kept Hester contained with excellent directional punting, and the Packers defense was better than the Bears defense on this day.

Yes, but so that you don't head into the off-season feeling too over-confident, remember that the Packers have 15 players on IR, and 9 were starters. Guys like their superb TE Jermichael Finley and their leading tackler from the year before, ILB Nick Barnett. They'll all be back next year.

And oh yeah, the Packers are one of the youngest teams in the league. You can count on them getting better.

By the way, I know you're hoping the Packers get crushed in the Superbowl. If the Bears had won, I'd be rooting for them in the Superbowl. I could be wrong, but I think most people would want the league their team plays in to win, so I root for the NFC over the AFC, just like I root for the National League to win the World Series because I'm a Brewers fan.

It's a shame you have all that bitterness. I would imagine it's hard to enjoy the sport that way unless your team wins everything every year. In the end, it's just a game.

Thanks Dennis; I've had to work on keeping a reasonable perspective of being a fan as I can get caught up in the drama (mostly when it comes to White Sox vs. Cubs, haha) but having a friendly debate makes it fun too.

Actually, the Bears won the first game in Chicago. You remember, the game where the Packers had 18 penalties.

For me this really depends on the teams. I'm more inclined to pull for a team from the same conference, but the same division gets a little tricky. This year, I will be pulling for the Steelers, primarily because I have a burrito riding on the game.

As for baseball, I share your being a fan of the Brewers but only when they're playing against the Cubs. (Remember that White Sox / Cubs comment earlier?)

You're absolutely right that all of this is just a game, and at the end of the day whether your team wins or loses really doesn't change anything. Unless you're betting on the game, which in that case I have a WSO for you.

Ah yes, you're right. My bad. That doesn't really change the point I was making to Zacman though...the Packers beat the Bears to get into the playoffs and beat them for the Championship, so if the Packers suck, where does that leave the Bears?

Of you, you do understand that was for Zacman because of what he wrote, and not intended for any other Bears fans. I'm not the kind to rub it in unless someone else starts it up. I actually enjoy watching the Bears play, their defense is relentless.

The importance people place on "their team" and the identification with "their team" could be a long and involved conversation. One I'd enjoy having with you, but I've got to get to the library before they close so we'll have to save that one for another time.

I do understand the point you were making and I apologize for hijacking that line of reasoning. It sounds like we have a fair amount of similarity when it comes to cheering for "our" team, and I do look forward to having further discussion about the topic at some point.

LOL, a bit thin skinned aren't we?

I was being facetious, and posting a few seconds after the game ended. Wasn't trying to be diplomatic.

Actually I'm very satisfied with our season overall. Particularly how we played the second half. If anything I'm a bit disappointed at some of the coaching decisions...deferring the opening kickoff, bad timeouts and non-timeouts etc.

With all the national attention the Cutler controversy is getting I think there is good reason for it. (not just the selective camera shots by Fox)

It's due to the anticipation not being fulfilled for the fans. With the way the Chicago defense stepped it up the second half would have been extremely interesting if Cutler #1 would have been healthy, and #2 settled down and played like he did against Seattle, New York, Phillie, etc.

As for the Super bowl, I don't have a horse in the race so I'll likely make it a game time decision as to who shows the most heart etc.

Should be a great game however.

              Cheers,
              Zac
P.S. The Green Bay Sucks comment is an expression of the fact that this game was extremely winnable and frankly outside of the first few possessions Green Bay did suck. Clearly Rogers was rattled, if he plays like that in the SB, no chance GB. :p

I know I'm late to this but even though the packers won the bears played a hell of a game. Just not enough time at the end to bounce back. The bears and the steelers would have been a nice match up. The way steelers played today though, they better get their acts together or the Packers will nail them to a wall. Good job chicago.
