The Official KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Thread For Windows

This thread started out as me saying that I use keyboard shortcuts all the time to dramatically increase my productivity and work flow speed. I initially revealed my top ten shortcuts and then the Warrior's of the forum jumped on board and contributed their own short cut secrets!

We now have a nice list of super-handy shortcuts for you to try out and master - using the mouse is slow, long, and just plain annoying - once you've mastered these keyboard shortcuts you'll be wizzing arround your computer at lightning pace.

A massive thank you and my love and respect goes out to every Warrior who contributes to the forum - this forum and this thread wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for you guys!

Shortcuts Revealed by: Zer0.

[ALT] + [TAB]
ALT+TAB switches between windows. If you hold ALT and press TAB you will switch to the next window - if you keey ALT held in, then you can press TAB multiple times to arrive at any window you have open on your computer.

[WINDOWS] + [M]
If you ever want to just MINIMISE EVERYTHING then these two keys are what you need to press.

The windows key is the one with the Windows logo on it which brings up the Start menu normally when pressed.

Pressing it along with M will minimise EVERYTHING down to the task bar.

I use this along with ALT + TAB all the time. When the screen gets too busy you can simply (WINDOWS + M) to get rid of everything, then (ALT + TAB ) to select the window you want open.

[CTRL] + or [U] or [I]
Easy as B,U,I - Bold Underline Italic.

Press CTRL + B to turn bold on, press it again to turn bold off. Same applied for Underline and Italic text.

[CTRL] + [S]
This is a FUNDAMENTAL. Learn it. CTRL + S = SAVE.
Now you know this, you have NO excuses for your work getting deleted due to you not saving it before a power cut.

Every 10 or 15 minutes, simply press two keys on your keyboard, CTRL + S, and your work is saved!

[CTRL] + [A]
Select Everything!
You would not believe how much I love this shortcut.

It has so much uses and I use it thousands of times everyday.

CTRL + A basically means "Select All" - but its quicker.

I normally use this along with "Copy/Cut" (CTRL + C/X) and "Paste" (CTRL + V).

It is actually very handy.... as an example:

You know when your typing in forms online and they ask you to type in your email - and then straight afterwards type it in again....

You know? the confirmation?

Well these annoy me - but luckily I do them faster than most.

I simplly: type my email into the first box then press: [CTRL+A] [CTRL+C][TAB][CTRL+V] - and its all done in a split second.

[CTRL]+[T]
New Tab!
In most modern web browsers (I use Firefox) this short cut opens a new tab.

[CTRL + TAB]
Same as ALT + TAB but with "Tabs" not "Windows"
Do you have multiple tabs open in your browser right now? Yes? Then press CTRL + TAB and see what happens.
You can switch between them at lightning speed!

Note: I often use this combo to quickly open a something in a new tab - or open a Google search in a new tab:

[CTRL + A]
[CTRL + C]
[CTRL + T]
[CTRL + TAB]
[CTRL + V]
[ENTER]

[CTRL] + [P] (Print), [O] (Open), [N] (New document).
Some more fundamentals!

[ALT] + [F4]
This is exactly the same as clicking the red X in the top corner - it closes the window.
If you are on your desktop when you press it - the system shut down box will appear for you.

[WINDOWS] + L
*My Personal Favourite*
Pressing the WINDOWS key and L will instantly LOCK your computer.

No matter what is running on the computer, or what is happening - if you press those two buttons in combination, your computer will log out and lock.

Try it now and see.

(I can see some Warriors having fun with this one... You would be amazed at how people react when you lock their computer in a split second and don't tell them how it is done ;] )

Shortcuts Revealed by: Dlink.

[Windows] + [D]
If you don't have the windows show desktop shortcut anywhere on your toolbar, this shortcut will do the same trick, so you can view your desktop quickly. I save a lot of files to my desktop for quick access and quick deletion, so this comes in handy.

[CTRL] + [Z] & [CTRL] + [Y]
Respectively, Undo and Redo.. ctrl + y sometimes isn't always redo & sometimes does nothing but you can usually always get ctrl+z to work universally.

[WINDOWS] + [TAB] - Windows 7 specific
Now, I have windows 7 & I've heard this works on vista but I'm not sure since I only have 7, but this works just like ALT+TAB, but it just looks A WHOLE LOT fancier. So, I switch between this and alt+tab.

[CTRL] + [D]
Add to favourites! (while in web-browser)

[CTRL] + [F5]
Refresh your computer

Shortcuts Revealed by: Mikescos.

[CTRL] + [Scroll Up/Down] or [+/-]
By holding the control key and scrolling up with your scroll wheel on your mouse (if you have one) you can increase the size of the font on any given web page. Hold the control key and scroll down and you can decrease the size of the font. If you don't have a scroll mouse, you can do the same with the + and - keys while holding the control key.

[F5]
Refresh the web page you are on.

[F2]
While using Windows Explorer or My Computer or however you like to navigate your hard drives, click on a file, press the F2 key to rename the file. *Remember if you have "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in your Folder Options to not change the file extension.

[F7]
When using most Word Processors to do a spell check. Can also be used in most other programs where you can type something. Email clients for example.

[F1]
Open the Help Menu for the program you are using. Not all programs utilize this function.

[CTRL] + [ESC]
While holding the control key and then pressing the escape key, you can Open the Start Menu

[SHIFT] + [DEL]
While holding the shift key and pressing the delete key you can permanently delete any file/s that is/are highlighted while navigating your computer. *This function will bypass the recycle bin and cannot be recovered from there.

[ALT] or [F10]
Pressing the Alt or F10 key will activate the program that you are using menu. You can then navigate through the menu with the up/down/left/right keys.

[ALT] + [CTRL] + [DEL]
while holding the alt key and then press and hold the control key and finally press and delete key will open the Task Manager.

[CTRL] + [F11]
If you visit a webpage, and see that its content does not fit the width of the window, you can press (Ctrl + F11) to fit that to your window size.

[CTRL] + [Shift] + [Enter]
This is for Windows Vista and 7, and it will Run a Program as Administrator.

Universal for "help"

[F11]
Makes browser full screen

Woah, learned some new stuff too.

I actually use select all, copy, paste, etc all the time (doh!) but I didn't know the minimize one. I've got Things on my Mac and if you have it running, you can press CTRL (not CMD) + SPACE and it'll pop-up unobtrusively and you can input a to-do. Very, very handy when you're going through gMail, or suddenly remember a thing, etc.

Other than that, CMD + SHIFT + 3; CMD + SHIFT + 4 (select area afterwards or press space to capture the current window) are some pretty easy and handy commands for Mac folks!

I have never used a Mac - are there commands similar, they sound pretty sweet by your post!

Here's some that I use to add to your list:

Windows + D

Well you've mentioned all the shortcuts except the "Refresh" key.
Press [Ctrl+ F5] to do refresh your computer.

  Great tips! I use many of these shortcuts (or their equivalents on Mac / Linux) regularly. In general, using the keyboard is much more efficient than doing everything with a mouse.
  
  One more critical thing for anyone involved in online business is learning to touch type. This is priceless for two reasons:
  1) Your thoughts are focused on what you are typing - this is the major advantage for me, even though I do not touch type very fast yet.
  2) Eventually, you get to type faster.
  
  There are many programs for learning touch typing, just google them. One great resource that made it more fun and helped me bring my speed to a useful level is typeracer.com - it's a racing game based on touch typing.

Here's a few some people may not know about.

CTRL + Scroll Up/Down or +/-

Good Tips.

Here is one I use frequently (This tip is for Opera browser, and I don't know if this works for any other browser):-

If you visit a webpage, and see that its content does not fit the width of the window, you can press (Ctrl + F11) to fit that to your window size.

Excellent post - I've personally learned a thing or two here, much thanks to the OP and everybody who posted additional shortcuts!

Let's keep this thread live - here are a few shortcuts I personally use:

F11 - when in a web browser it makes the window full screen, and more visible by hiding toolbars and the likes.

[ctrl] + and [ctrl] - - these are the ZOOM of a page. Works in: Photoshop and in Web Browsers

[ctrl] + [alt] + [del] - most people know this one, but it brings up the "Task Manager" in windows.

From this Task Manager you can view which programs are running and how they are responding, which processes are running and how much memory each one is using.

If you have a "problem" program active or a process which is causing you problems, you can swiftly end them from inside the Task Manager

ALSO ---- When working with LISTS, or FILES and FOLDERS....

If you want to select more than one file - hold Ctrl and click each of the different files you want to select.

If you want to select everything in a list from a certain file to a certain file, then click the first file, then hold SHIFT and click the last file.

Pressing ESC while in a web browser is the same as clicking "stop" when the page is loading.

F1 is universal for "Help"

That's all I have in my mind right now which hasn't been added - thanks for the thread OP!

I use CTRL + D to get to the desktop (basically the same as CTRL + M), and CTRL + V to paste items, though I still copy or cut them the regualr way.

excellent post.

This isn't a keyboard shortcut but one thing that I've found that saves LOADS of time when doing a lot of this repetitive IM stuff is to use a clipboard manager like ClipX (which is free!). Basically you can copy/paste multiple items at a time. Saves a ton of time switching back and forth between windows and can really speed up a lot of those boring tasks.

Here is one I use it sometimes
If you want to take a screen shot of your desktop:
ctr alt print
Hold ctr and alt, then hit print, open up your paint program press ctr v and you'll get the screen shot

great tips - doing more and more work on the laptop with that pesky scratch plate instead of a mouse, which I find hard to accurately control. Better to use keyboard shortcuts if i can.

Haha I feel you on this one - I simply must use the keyboard only when I'm on a laptop - using a normal mouse gets to me, but using one of those scratch pads is just plain annoying! lol

Just Zer0,

To be honest, people that are younger, such as you, are MORE likely than older people to learn this at a young age. When I was ten, Microsoft, Apple, and IBM's PC division didn't even EXIST! Apple WAS starting to get off the ground, but I don't think microsoft was. And IBM? *****IBM*****? They literally LAUGHED at the prospect that the microcomputer would EVER get anywhere. Of course, DELL didn't exist. Toshiba, Fujitsu, Sony, etc... didn't make microcomputers. HP's micro was a PIECE OF JUNK, but I think that came about in the late 70s.

When I was 10, I had already started studying computers that were JUST starting to take off. When I was about 15 or so, I started studying everything I could about an EXPENSIVE and obscure O/S Called UNIX. In the early eighties, when the new comers, like IBM and HP, started making super minis(between micros and full computers), they adopted UNIX! SUN and some others made large micros that ALSO used UNIX. Of course, a guy named Tanenbaum made a lousy UNIX work alike. The story goes that he had a student named torvalds that tried to make a FULL UNIX like O/S, and he called it LINUX, and FINALLY brought an inexpensive UNIX variant to the masses! BTW I was practically 20 before microcomputers FINALLY started taking over, and people really spoke about microcomputers. My main hobby was electronics, which is why I saw so much a decade earlier.

I laughed at Windows, feeling it was an interesting thing that IBM used such an environment that seemed so much like the CICS they had on their mainframes, which I ALSO thought was a JOKE! I never really touched Windows until 3.1, which was apparently the first real viable version. It didn't even have networking. The networking came with 3.11!

Frankly, I just used F1, F3, F5, Ctrl-C(which ANSI defined DECADES earlier as ABORT), Ctrl-S, Ctrl-Q, Ctrl-X, and a few others.

I was happy to find out earlier about Ctrl-A, and Ctrl-Z(which helped with correcting errors created by some sporadic behaviour and errors due to focus problems ENDEMIC with M/S windows!).

Anyway, I just didn't appreciate the generational reference, so I contrasted it with mine. OTHERWISE, NICE THREAD!

Some tips for using the mouse;

To highlight a word or sentence you can double click on any word on the page. If you keep the mouse key pressed after the double click you can highlight multiple words

You can then release the mouse and do your normal activity. I usually then left click, hold the button and can drag the highlighted word(s) where I need them, pressing ctrl while dragging makes a copy etc..
