What Could Be Causing This Internet Connection Problem?

Hi folks. I have a problem that has been going on for several weeks now and
it's finally gotten to the point where it's driving me nuts.

I'll give you a few examples of what's happening and hopefully, you can
tell me what could be causing this.

1. I'll go to start or reply to a forum thread and the little thing at the bottom
of the browser that indicates the connection will just do nothing. I have to
hit the little X at the top of the browser to stop it, try again, sometimes
several times, before it catches and the post is made.

2. I'll go to post a new article to my Wordpress blog. Same thing happens.
The publish button will spin and spin and nothing happens. I'll have to hit
the X, sometimes several times after trying the action again and again
until eventually it catches.

3. I'll go to Aweber and try to perform an action. Sometimes it will spin
and other times I'll get a message that the page I'm looking for doesn't
even exist, which I know is absurd altogether.

This problem is happening at almost every site where I have to perform
some kind of saving of data. That's the common action. Also happens now
with DLGuard, especially doing lookups, and this never happened before.

Any clues as to what could be causing this?

Is it my cable modem?
Is it a wire in the house?
Has my service just all of a sudden become crap?
Is it my router?
Is it something on my PC that is preventing me from connecting regularly?

I don't want to call the cable company and have them come out just to
tell me everything is fine unless I can be pretty sure that's where the
problem is. I use Comcast.

After a few weeks of this, I've had enough, even though the problem does
seem to be very intermittent.

Any help you can give or advice you can offer will be appreciated.

  • Have you tried resetting the router? Simply unplug it for about ten seconds and then replug it back in. If it is the router that could possibly fix the issue.

    • Shannon, I shut down my PC, router, everything, each night.
    • Steven,

I have had a similar problem for the last several days also. I thought for a while that ComCast was playing around, but I did reset my modem a couple of times and that solved the issue.
  • Hi Steve,

I am guessing it is a Windows PC?

What kind of regular maintenance do you perform on it?

Is it on a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)?

It really sounds like a caching problem. Who is your Internet provider?

    • Have you tried using another computer on the connection to see if the same thing happens? Perhaps a friend's laptop.

That should at least tell you if the problem is with your computer or something to do with the router/connection.

If it's your PC (which would be my guess) then I would start by:

      a) scanning it with malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org)
      b) running ccleaner (just the registry cleaning bit is usually all I use)
      c) defragging the hard drive

    • Sorry... I'm very tired right now.

      I missed the Comcast reference.

Troubleshooting is obviously a step-by-step process of elimination.

Since the problem occurs while updating data on different servers, it is most likely related to your Internet provider's server or your pc.

Before calling Comcast, I would recommend doing all of the local troubleshooting that I could first.

Run something like CCleaner to clear out all of the junk files that can interfere with your pc's cpu.

Shut the pc down for a while, to allow it to cool, and try it again as soon as you start it back up.

Try re-starting in safe mode (with networking) to see if it makes any difference. And, of course, load only necessary software while testing.

Writing to a database is (can be) processor intensive on both ends.

(Or at least appear to be.)

  • Here's my opinion of Comcast. They suck. I had the exact same problem as you for months on end and Comcast came out multiple times to try and fix said problem. I had the modem replaced, the wires replaced, hard drive defragged, temp files deleted, AV and anti spyware run. Nothing fixed it. Finally, I dumped them because the root cause of the issue couldn't be fixed. Fortunately, I moved to a town that offers Verizon Fios and walla! Perfect connection, nothing drops ever and it's lightning quick. Sorry, I know this doesn't help you much, but thought I would pass on my experience lol

    • Steven,

You don't happen to have your phone and ADSL modem sharing a line, do you?

I had similar problems to you until I got a splitter.

  • I use TimeWarner cable, I've had some similar issues like you and I went to my firefox browser and clicked on the Tools tab and cleared my history and that worked for me. I don't know if that will help you, but it's worth a shot.
  • Hey Steve,

    Think this will help you:

    How to Flush DNS

Basically "packets" of information can get caught in communication and this will clear them up and it sounds like it will solve the problem you are having.

I have had similar problems myself.

It will not get rid of any info you need just faulty packets of information.

    Hope this helps.

  • Okay, King, the Mac attack is under way. MacMillan, MacBook, Mac enthusiast here. My problem wasn't exactly like yours, but my Mac would go into a spin cycle a couple times a day for about two months this fall. I tried voodoo, chanting, meditations, and considered an exorcism after pursuing every logical approach.

I don't have Comcast, but I called my cable company and the guy came out that afternoon with a new cable modem and I haven't had a problem since.

    Good Luck Steven! --Mike

    • Mike,

That was the problem right there. You have to use insulated voodoo pins otherwise they cause a short circuit.
