Telemarketing illegal?

Isn't there a law against unsolicited telemarketing? I get phone calls every single and to make matters worse, most of them are automated. They have even started calling my cell phone. I never gave my phone to these companies. The main message is that '.. Hullo, if you are worried about your financial future......' I am thinking of changing my phone lines but afraid that the same will happen? Isn't there a law against this? How do they access my phone number?
Thanks

Wow, that is just unbelievably annoying. I hate telemarketers. I think you really need to change your number.

In the U.S. we have a do not call list.
If your phone number is on the list, telemarketer's can't call you.
I just found one for Canada also.

Believe or not, it doesn't really work, people will still call you even if you on that list b/c your info has been sold to so many databases. Heck we have companies down here that don't care, get in trouble all the time for calling people on the DNC and all they do is pay the fines constantly b/c the fines are nothing compared to what the make in $.

I'm at my sister's and she's not on the do not call list and gets those automated telemarketing messages.

It astounds me that it would have to be illegal for a company to have more sense than to send a recorded sales pitch to someone via the telephone. Being solicited while you are at home and have to stop anything you are in the middle of to take a phone call is bad enough. But to actually have the audacity to think so little of me as a potential customer that you can't even "waste money on a human" to talk to me is disgusting. If I'm not even important enough to talk to in person when you are interrupting my life to push your products in my face there is no way in hell you are ever going to be a company I'm going to give my time or money to. EVER - no matter where else I see your ads.

I sometimes just put up with the calls long enough to talk to them in person so I can tell them that they are on MY scum to be avoided at all costs list.

They don't call you because you are important! They call to harass you into a sale! The "better" gadgets call you and, if they detect a voice, ask YOU to wait while they connect you with a jerk to harass you. Otherwise, they leave a message. They try to make that message sound like YOU have a problem and have to call THEM!

BTW there ARE a number of laws making telemarketing almost illegal. But nobody enforces them.

STeve got it right when he said:
"BTW there ARE a number of laws making telemarketing almost illegal. But nobody enforces them."

They call my home phone even though I am on the do not call list. It is basically worthless.
They call my cell even though I NEVER give that out to anyone. My wife has given it out to a few people, but those people are usually medical related.
Some of the SCAMS the telemarketers use are:
Caller ID shows an incorrect number. And if you star 69 the call, the phone system says thats not a working number.
They will say:"to be taken off the list, press 3" and you press 3, then they say "you will be taken off within 24 hours".
Then you get a call from the same company. This time you press one, which is what they tell you to do if you are interested in their "service", and they tell you the only way to get off the list is to press 3!
WhoHow are you going to complain to? Even if the government was going to do anything(ha!) the companies are making it almost impossible to report them.

Another thing that really irritates me are the unslocited text messages to my phone. I don't text. (see the "I'm old fashioned" thread) but even so, I can receive text messages, and Sprint has the gall to charge nme for every text received whether I wanted it or not! Just another way individuals are ripped off.

Yeah - I know how they work. You either stay on the line and get connected, at which time you ask what company you are speaking with - you keep them on the line long enough that an operator can trace the call back so you have the evidence you need. If they just leave a number to call, you call the phone company and report that number to them and tell the phone company that you do not want calls from them anymore and consider them harassement.

If you report the same company three times they can be sued for harassment or the phone company can act against them or both. It takes legally takes three calls after they are told to stop calling before action can be taken.

OOOuuuuuuuu - you just nailed me on that one. I recently had to get my car tags shipped to me from Idaho and was on foot for 18 days unable to legally drive my car because the post office LOST my mail. I'm wondering what kind of identity fraud is going to be the result of their carelessness. This came shortly after getting in a rauw with the post office because our mail deliverer sprayed pepper spray into the house because she's scared of dogs and they were at the door barking at her when she delivered the mail. I had the dog in the front yard when she delivered mail later and he went after her and I had to actually grab him, so she had a fit. We ended up moving the mail box to the other side of the fence to keep HER out of the yard. I can be walking this dog and if he sees her even way down the street he throws a tizzy. She commented on it to me and I told her that if it had been me she hit with that pepper spray INSIDE my home, she'd be badly bruised and in jail. I also let her know if this was my residence I'd have sued her for that crap and it would have cost her job. As it was not my home I was told by the DA I had no means of recourse.

I HATE the post office out here. If I have to send an actual letter I will actually pay to have it delivered by Fed Ex now instead of giving money to the US postal service.

There is a loophole. The law does allow for telemarketers to make an unsolicited call even if you're on the DNC list, but you can not file a formal complaint until you have told them not to call again. Also, if you have any kind of business phone listing you're just s***t out of luck.

I NEVER heard THAT! In fact, one law says that they MUST stop calling you if you ask them to do so, EVEN if you AREN'T on the DNC list!

There IS a loophole that allows them to call EVEN if you tell them not to and are on the DNC list and that is if they are a registered charity!

Technically the DNC list has many loopholes, because no legal action will be taken unless it is a non-business residence AND the caller has been advised they are on the DNC list. Charities are exempt as are collections, political solicitations, and also if there has been a previous established business relationship. Basically, the law has no teeth.

Don't know about Canada, but in the US, there is a do not call list you can sign up for....it doesn't make telemarketing illegal...it's a listing of people who do not want telemarketers calling them.

Sal, I actually posted about the post office on facebook the other day. My mail carrier apparently lied and his supervisor backed him up.Not only that she was one of the rudest people I have ever spoken too. I called our local consumers affairs office and as of yet mo one has bothered to call me back.
I used to be a cheerleader for postal employees because I thought they got a bad rap.Not only that I was a union rep for them for most of the 10 years I worked there. But some employees deserve to be reptimanded.
Heres a quick recap of what happened. My carrier left a "Left notice" slip saying he couldn't deliver a package. I called saying I needed it redelivered but asked why he left notice instead of actually delivering. I was told that the carrier reng my doorbell twice and nobody answered PLUS there were no cars in the driveway. Two problems with that story. First there is a van in the driveway.( I refuse to drive it,but its there) that a friend has laoned up, Second, and maybe I will post a pic later, from my desk I can turn my head and look out the window and SEE the mailbox..
I am currently writing a letter to my representative because this is just one instance of reoccring problems with my loca post office.

FLoyd, did you not read the thread? That was not only mentioned but discussed about how ineffective it is.
