One way backlinks to the pages of a domain give it authority in Google over time. One strategy to gain these backlinks is to bookmark your content in social bookmarking sites that do not use the 'nofollow' tag. Generally speaking, the higher the PageRank (PR) of the site, the better.
New Free Automated Bookmarking Software

The key to effective social bookmarking is to do it on a large scale - bookmark all your best content on a regular basis and bookmark at as many sites as you possibly can. I've listed a couple of dozen sites here and so even if that only takes you a couple of minutes for each one you're looking at about an hour of your time if done manually!
IMAutomator is a free tool that allows you to bookmark your content at a big list of sites in mere seconds! You plug your URL, click a button to fill in the title, description & tags (or you can enter your own) and then click another button to submit and that's it! IMAutomator then goes off and submits your bookmark to all the sites in the system over a period of time of your choosing, such as once per day. This is totally automated with no intervention from you!
Furthermore IMAutomator handles all of the account creation for you! Inferior tools require you to set up your own accounts at every site first which is a huge time-sink. IMAutomator is the easiest and quickest tool available and it's totally FREE!
Not all of the sites listed on this page are currently supported by IMAutomator but the list of supported sites is constantly growing so it's an absolute must have!

Why Use Social Bookmarking?

Every time you add a bookmark to one of your pages in one of these sites you create a backlink. If you bookmark every piece of content you create in all of these sites you can build a lot backlinks over time. For best results, you want to make sure that the bookmarking sites provide a real, do-follow link. There is much debate as to whether or not no-follow links are still useful so I won't get into that here. However one thing you do want is a real link. Several sites don't provide real backlinks - they use their own form of dynamic link which does not count as a backlink.
One other thing to be aware of is that even though these are your personal bookmarks, you need to ensure that they are public - that way other people (Google really) can find them. But be careful, some bookmarking sites such as Connotea have a specific niche and probably wont appreciate your toenail clipping bookmarks.
Sites With a Voting Element

For the first year or so I only included sites on this list that did not have any kind of voting component that allowed people to vote up certain links. I call these story submission sites. The reason for not including them was because many allowed stories to be voted down as well as up - not a good thing!
However, more and more of the purely bookmarking sites are either folding or have been making their links nofollow in recent months and more and more sites are now starting which have a voting element but without the vote down - there's no burying of stories like Digg does. They are marked on the list with a [V].
Some Notable Additions

There are some bookmarking sites that are either nofollow or they use a dynamic link structure. However, leaving aside the nofollow debate for a moment, there is also a matter of traffic. If the content you are bookmarking is high quality then it could get votes from other readers and in the case of some of the big sites, getting your bookmark on the front page can result in massive amounts of traffic! In the case of particularly big sites such as Delicious, those bookmarks often get copied to many other places so one nofollow link in delicious could actually result in about a dozen links elsewhere though this tends to happen only with popular links.
In this situation I'd recommend submitting to these sites also, and just forget about whether or not they follow!
  1. Delicious (8)
  2. Diigo (5)
  3. Mister-Wong (8)
  4. Blinklist (7)
  5. NetVous (6)
  6. Simpy (6)
Note that IMAutomator supports Mister-Wong and many other sites that aren't listed here.
What To Bookmark

Technically you can bookmark anything - you could literally bookmark every page of your website however I don't recommend that. The idea behind social bookmarking is that you are sharing content with other users around the web. This is particularly important for sites with a voting component. If you bookmark rubbish it is really just a form of spamming! I recommend only bookmarking your best content - blog posts, articles, editorials, interviews, podcasts, videos, resources and so on. This keeps everyone happy.
How to Bookmark For SEO

The purpose of this exercise is to generate backlinks to our content pages that help them rank better in Google. I'll assume that each piece of content is optimised for some keyword. There are usually three places where you can add information:
  • The title
  • Tags
  • Description
Make sure your keyword is in all three of them. Note that the title especially usually becomes the anchor text that is used in the resulting link so the title is arguably the most important element to get right.
