I'm Going Cold Turkey for 30 Days

I was just reading a post on Steve Pavlina's blog about giving something up - or, for that matter, starting something - by using a 30 day trial period; a bit like Shareware.

It's an idea I had already come across, but what struck me was that at the end, he gave a list of suggestions including:

  • Give up TV.
  • Give up online forums
  • Give up cigarettes, soda, junk food, coffee, or other unhealthy addictions.
  • Become an early riser.
  • Write in your journal every day.
  • Write a new blog entry every day.
  • Read for an hour a day on a subject that interests you.
  • Meditate every day.
  • Learn a new vocabulary word every day.
  • Go for a long walk every day.

So I have decided to give up the Warrior Forum for 30 Days starting tomorrow 12th Feb 2011. Why? Well, I joined in 2003. Here are my post stats:

Total Posts: 3,319
Posts Per Day: 1.78

And I was wondering what the effect of those 3,319 posts spread out over blogs, forums etc across the web would have been. Of course, there is no way I can know. But for 30 days (my 30 trial), I am going cold turkey and I am going to spend the time on blog commenting to see what the effect will be.

Of course, I am not leaving. After all, I have made all of my contacts here at the forum. Perhaps, I'll report my results in 30 days.

Meanwhile if anyone finds me posting again before March 14th, remember to call me on it

See you in 30 days!

Will

Good luck! May I ask why you plan to spend most of your time blog commenting?

    Good luck on your quest.

As for me I couldn't see myself doing such thing. The hardest part is to give up on cigarettes, soda, junk food, coffee, or other unhealthy addictions, although I don't smoke but got to have the coffee and my beer.

WarriorForum maybe a few days but no more than 2 days. I can't do the 30 days thing I mean there's no other place to find good people, great information and all around super experience.

    See you Will!

Interesting experiment, and I'm sure it will go well for you! I've found that I can achieve short-term success through networking here, but there's a point at which you spend more time than is worth it for the benefits.

I've been doing something similar -- cutting out almost all social networks from Monday to Saturday. I'm slipping up now and again (like today, obviously :p ), but it helps me immensely with my work focus.

    Good luck, Will!

I've been spending a lot more time lately blog commenting and it has increased my traffic, made me sales, grown my list, and given me interview and guest posting opportunities, to name a few.

OK...You got me. I think I'll quit going cold turkey for the next 30 days.

      Hey Will,

Let's add a bit of skin to the game. How about for each instance, within the thirty days, you're caught in the forum you donate $100 dollars to a worthy cause.

      Kevin

P.S. If you can't find a worthy cause I'll gladly "hold" the funds in my bank account until one is found.

I'm doing a different kind of 30-day experiment. For the next 30 days I'm going to try not to quit anything. It will be hard, but I'll give it my best shot.

I thought about doing that myself, actually - quitting forum posting and put my efforts into producing more articles. It didn't work. I wasn't writing posts or as many articles as I'd expected. I found something totally different to occupy most of my time.

So after a few months, I got this urge to write. What did I do? I came back here. It's much more fun interacting than writing articles.

If you really want to quit something, though, it's better to do it a day at a time. That's been my experience. Then it doesn't seem so overwhelming. That's how I quit smoking many moons ago.

Regardless, lately I've been seriously thinking of giving up TV so I can do something else with my eyes than stare at screens 24/7. The constant eye abuse is beginning to show.

And then, news breaks and I'm glued to the set.
