What Will the World Look Like with Google in Charge

The speed at which Google's empire is expanding and diversifying, is a tad scary.

They own just about every other big thing on the Internet or are in direct competition with it. Apparently, FB and G are in talks with Twitter and one of them (My bet is on G) will acquire Twitter soon. ((Twitter made like $45 m last year (promoted tweets are a hit) but due to the massive expansion they were still in the negative. Heck they even launched Google Weddings!

So my question to all the imaginative warriors working on a Friday night is, what will the world look like with Google in charge?

I think, in the age of Google, when girls will wear "I <3 geeks" T-shirts. It won't mean they are into cute guys with glasses but actual nerds.

(p.s are there any US warriors proud of their countries greatest entrepreneurial success (in recent years)?)

I don't know. But I can't wait until the gmail ads start reflecting what you're thinking rather than just what's in your inbox.

People started hating Microsoft when they got too big, I'm wondering if Google will suffer the same fate.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

G is being very smart about the people they choose to represent them.

I do agree with you though, they could still suffer the same unpopularity. At the end of the day, no matter how good or big a monopoly is, no matter how many jobs they are adding to the economy, all it takes it one rogue engineer and people start seeing the dangers.

They will get some hate mail from all the small businesses they are directly competing with for sure.

I think Google is seen more as 'cool' by the younger generation in this day and age. Microsoft seemed like just a big software company?

On a serious note, security could become a really ugly issue as Google is heavily invested in cloud computing. Privacy is already an issue with state heads and Google (*points to China, EU*). Not good.

Just imagine the company that tops Google. You know it will eventually.

Google. is doing a LOT of stuff I wouldn't DARE do, for privacy requiements, P/R, etc....

Some of the stuff they are doing is not REALLY new, it is just the first time anyone dared to tie it together, etc...

I've been trying out an android phone. After I took it home I thought "YOU IDIOT"! It has EVERYTHING tied to google! EVERYTHING! OK, maybe not added apps. ******MAYBE******* not notices, music selections, etc.... But contacts, tasks, appointments, email, and probably texts ARE all stored in GOOGLE! As I recall, you HAVE to be tied to gmail! You may not know, but gmail has a nice online text tool, and it STORES conversations!

IMAGINE, you have a friend that is effectively off the grid. They use a hotel phone, and live at a campsite, etc.... You update your contacts, and BANG. google can tie EVERYTHING together! That is just TOO MUCH POWER for a company you OBVIOUSLY can't trust. And they can probably tell where you are at any moment, and take pictures of the area, with the phone gadgets!

I completely agree Steve. It is TOO much power.

And power is a fickle beast, even with the best of intentions just one power hungry maniac could endanger our privacy. Look at Assange, I'm not saying what he did was bad or good just that he's turned into the ideal narcissist's caricature. Same could happen to Google and they sure have a lot more exploit.

Maybe its the headache talking, but I keep imagining a future where instead of people, servers and data centers will be held hostage/targeted. For now, Google seem to be doing well with protecting our privacy. Lets hope it stays that way.

Well a very thoughtful article 82ana. I never thought about our privacy protections. Almost all the important and great financial companies are dealing through Google and God forbid if any one "power hungry maniac" as mentioned by ana can create great devastation.

There are movies ALL OVER about people holding data hostage. You just don't notice because it is usually a relatively small deal. But people DO get data and usually threaten to release it if not paid. The most popular application of this is some damning information to destroy a persons life/or part of it. Known as blackmail. SOMETIMES, a person will threaten to NOT release information, if it is unique. Again, to destroy people's lives or limit them.

A large company like google can merely do it on a far larger scale.

Echelon Conspiracy comes to mind and episodes of 24.

Did you read the article Gawker — Today's gossip is tomorrow's news posted above? Even if the security or privacy beach isn't large scale we are still at risk of extortion, financial fraud or worse, on an individual level. :/

IMO it will take a few of these individual horror stories for Google and the Governments to realize they need to ... maybe stop targeting so specifically and not store our data? Does not seem likely at this point.

I bet there's theores going around that it's controled by the Rothschild family or something lol. Maybe Google will end up one day like Standard Oil.

When Google is in charge of the world you will find that you can drive around searching for any High Street business and discover it in a prominent corner position on one day, and then on the next it will have had to move halfway down the road because it changed it's window display too suddenly and Google deemed it an attempt to game the system.

Google will regularly visit your home and poke about inside it to see what's new because they'll be given a key by default. Putting a small note just inside the front door will prevent them from coming in, but only a minority of people will be aware of this and know the special wording necessary.

Rushing to greet a neighbour with an excited cry of 'Mrs Johnson!', you'll find yourself sprawled out flat on your face after tripping on the sign that quickly sprang up from the verge in front of you saying 'Did you mean Mrs Jones..?'

    It's a beautiful future
