As IMers, how do we make money with Egypt's current condition?

I do a little search and the domain "18dayrevolution" is sold out (except for .biz). I am wondering how people can make money with this keyword... Adsense?

Heck, I have a Ted Williams .com domain (the homeless man with golden voice), and until now I can't figure out how to monetize this domain. Maybe I will keep for future use....

There are a lot of Egyptians out of work, which was part of the reason for the uprise. You could buy some of their children and put them to work for you. The Egyptians did it for centuries. It's how their pyramids were made... you know the ones that they continue to make all the tourism money off of!

I'm not sure where you got your info on how the pyramids were built but it's pretty funny if it was meant to be a joke.

If not, I advise you to improve your research.

Some sites had video feeds, recordings, tweets, etc and used popups, ads on page and ads before videos started.

Now, you could do a archival type site.

Joking aside, if you really want to profit from misery, death and destruction, why not enrol in law school? Or become a journalist for one of the major TV networks?

Wow, I just realized I missed the big opportunity when in the mid-90s I used to work as a humanitarian in the Bosnian was and later in Cechnya...

Too bad there wasn't really internet yet in those parts of the world at that time; otherwise I could have made money with... how did he say? ah, "the current condition" of those countries. Maybe I should have bought the domain names like:
    - 100thousand-dead.com
    - chechengenocide.com
    - mutilatedchildren.com...

Also, I am glad there were no IMers around in December 1989 when the Romanian revolt removed their dictator, Ceausescu, and executed him... during the events I was there as a journalist and got 4 bullets in my car but survived - I am sure some smart IMers could have made money off that, too.

I agree with Andrew aswell here, it might seem a bit harsh by some viewers.
I definitely wouldn't use pop-ups, perhaps a few small links to a different current events site would be alright, but I still would feel mad if I came across such a site.

You must have missed my rant that this story was dead. Apparently I was right but the tragedy continues. In and out of rehab. No longer doing voice work for the Cavs and I guess that house he got was a loaner since he is now living at a halfway house in California.

    I like this idea.

Anyone know where I can get a bulk discount rate on Egyptian children. I've got some angela backlink packs that need doin'

As for the OP topic, you've gotta jump on this stuff the day it happens. You need to know how to quickly rank, take advantage of google news and get out the buzz that your site is the site for pain n' suffering.

I have to agree that the Ted Williams topic is dead - I got the domain for less that $2 anyway and I believe I could spin it off rather than letting it expired.... And about the egypt thing, the .com is offered at Flippa for $3500.. LOL

If you want 1 and 2 cent clicks, sure.

Plus you're going to be competing against genuine news sites for visitors.

Do you really think you can outrank CNN, BBC etc., etc., to grab a hold of the visitors in the short window of time that this will occupy people's minds? How many advertisers are competing for the relevant keywords?

Plus, if someone is interested in this topic, where do you think they're going to go?

BBC/CNN, or a site thrown together to "make a quick buck"?

The only way you're going to be even noticed is if you are actually on the ground there, taking your own photos, shooting your own videos, interviewing the people on the streets. Even the big kahunas may take notice of you then.

So, do you have access to any resources yourself, or are you just going to be pulling feeds from other sites?

Can you offer exclusive interviews with the Egyptian ambassador? The Foreign Secretary? Anyone with skin in the game? Or even Mubarek himself?

ha ha, you are hard man but considering that I also read some positive advice, I will take your's as challenge... There are always way to profit in anything. I can build a site that sells memorabilia or something like that but that's not what I am going to do if I have time....

            @ Adie

You inadvertantly made a point. Anything controversial gets attention - especially to the extreme - and you will get a lot of hits. However, the point I was alluding to at the top of this thread was a different direction than where this thread ultimately ended up. Social media was the driving force in Egypt, and more specifically it was the young Google marketing executive who loosely directed it from his downtown apt. This social media phenomena is a powerful trend and its expanding rapidly to other countries in the region.

People do prefer the negative, the mahem, tragic, carnage, conspiracy, suffering, corruption, destruction, etc more so than what is really inspiring, uplifting, heroic, exemplary, or the enduring spirit of others yearning to breath free. Even in sports or auto racing, the spirit of winning is second to the blood, fights, and car wrecks.

The power of social media has worked in our own recent national election, has been a force to be reckoned with in others, and is now a nascent power in the whole region. Get the hits on both sides of controversy, and you can monetize it if you will. I've been doing exactly that right on this here forum for quite a few years.

You can always use hot topics in the news to drive traffic to your current money sites.

You have to think laterally. Anybody can send out a press release on the Internet these days. Write up some nice press releases talking about Tahrir Square and the like... look on Google trends & YouTube to see what's the current 'trend'. You will end up on PR sites and Google news etc if you do it right.

What to do with all those eye-balls looking at your press releases? Send them to your current sites. This works better if you run a site which has mass appeal, such as weight loss, make money, get rid of your debt, etc.

It may not be the most targeted traffic, but so what? It's free (or not completely free if you actually want your press release out to real places and pay PRWeb or one of the other good paid ones to do it), but it's still real traffic... and a lot of it.

I always use hot topics & current trends to drive traffic to where I want it, and if you do it right, you better believe you can monetize it.

Use some of the keywords from the Revolution, creating content about the Revolution. Add in some Egyptian history and combine this with info about Egyptian tours and vacations, explaining that once it's safe, one of the best ways to help the people of Egypt is to spend your money there.

AS far as Kartina goes, what's wrong with selling stuff from Home Depot to help them rebuild? Or how about survival kits including survival food, supplies and water treatment kits?

Quick question: For those against making money from the Revolution, while you were watching the events on CNN or CBS, did those networks run advertising during the news cast? If so, were you offended by them running these ads, therefore making money from the Revolution?

What I don't get is that some of the same people jumping on the OP are the SAME people who are saying the Egyptian revolution is a good thing.

So, to those people I ask: which is it, a tragedy or a good thing? If the former, then I find profiting from it distasteful. If the latter, then I sense some hypocrisy in saying "it's a good thing, but the OP is trying to profit from a bad thing".

That's my take on it anyway.

    All the best,
