Schools cracking down on fighting

Hello,
my 16 year old son has been suspended for one full year, not just a semester, a full calendar year for fighting in school.
I am the first to admit that my son is no angel but I really think it is an extreme punishment.
I am doing an appeal to try to get him back in school in Sept.
The school district is at least paying for tutors, I am also looking to send him to a private school as well.

Too many questions to be answered.Did he start the fight?
    How many others were involved?
Did they get the same punishment?
Is the one year suspension a policy for everyone?
    Paying for tutors is rediculous.
Most probaly wont agree with me,but he should probably have gotten 3 whacks with "the board of education" and maybe a 3 day suspension to think about his actions.

I had a similar problem with my youngest girl in school.
She had one teacher that was constantly in her face.
Every other teacher she had gave her positive remarks, except this one.
Well one morning in the hall the teacher got in her face.
My daughter said in a low voice to her friend that she wanted to punch the teacher. Now she didn't say it in an angry or violent way, but more in a defeated type of voice. Well the teacher heard her and reported her to the principal. Next thing I know they want to expel her, not suspend her.
We had to go for a hearing with the district president to determine her fate.
Before the hearing he told me that since Columbine and 9/11 they have to take these things more seriously and that she deserved to be expelled.

I was able to change his mind:rolleyes: in the hearing (she got suspended for 2 weeks). The next day I had a meeting with the teacher and some of her other teachers and advisers. Lets just say there was a reason my wife wouldn't let me go to school meeting when she was a live

Anyways while she was out of school they provided a tutor for her.
She loved it so much that she was mad when they said she could go back to school.

He started the fight and it is filed as as an unprovoked fight.
Did they get the same punishment?
Some of his friends had fights in the afternoon that the school is claiming that he was a part of even though he was at home at that time.
Is the one year suspension a policy for everyone?
Not for all, this is the first that I have heard of this, when they told me he was suspended for a year I thought they meant he could go back in Sept.
    Paying for tutors is rediculous.
The school district is supplying the tutors.

I do agree with you on this one.

I would be appealing this with the school board ASAP and possibly talk to local newspapers and maybe find a attorney to contact them. A lot of times these places think they can impose their will and no one will say anything.

Was he even fighting? I have gotten in trouble for fighting, and speaking in class, even when I DIDN'T do it! Frankly, teachers NEVER cared before, why should they care now?

BTW one of my favorite anecdotes is how a spanish teacher I had *******AT A TEACHERS CONFERENCE******* learned a new trick. She would stand VERY close to some student that she didn't like. She BRAGGED about it! She told us WHERE she learned it, WHY she was doing it, etc.... Well, soon after that she had the principal of the school up to ask us if we knew WHO was vandalizing her car. MOST teachers parked in an area that the students KNEW about and could access, yet SHE seemed to be the ONLY one that had problems! I didn't know WHO, but I knew *****WHY*****!

SO, would SHE get expelled, etc... for harassing students, etc? I DOUBT IT!
