Hey Warriors,

some days ago I came along a new initiative from the WWF. They've just launched a new software which creations files with the .WWF extension.

They read just like Adobe PDF files, but with one notable difference: the content can't be printed!

Check out the details at:
Save as WWF, Save a Tree :*Home

Right now, I'm in the process of turning my business 'green'. Customers will either get a discount when they go for WWF-files, or have to pay a few bucks more for the printable PDF's.

The extra money charged will be contributed to the WWF foundation, but not without being doubled by my business. Customers, followers and visitors will be able to see the amount of donations using a graphic at the main website.

Go GREEN with your Internet Marketing business!

-Dave

I can disable printing in a PDF, if I am so inclined, so I don't see the point of these .wwf files.

Plus, trees are planted and harvested, very much like vegetables in a garden. When they cut down trees, they plant more. It's a sustainable practice.

Hmm. I wonder if they've thought this through.

As Dan says, it's a simple matter to just disable the print option before issuing a pdf; no need for any extra software.

Might be a better idea to encourage greater use of dedicated eBook/pdf readers, such as the Kindle.

Wait, since when did the World Wrestling Federation care about trees? Just Kidding.

Cute idea and I'm all for green n' stuff but that last thing I need is another file format to further confuse my already confused customers. My suggested slogan for the WWF Save a baby seal, club a dumb person didn't go over very well.

It's not a bad idea for a green related website though. An extra little touch to grab those tree huggers where it makes 'em happy.

It's not really a novelty that printing is disabled in these files - it's a statement you make. A GREEN statement, which will be yet another point to convince people to buy from you.

Plus if you're big enough, you can easily get press coverage. Even land a special partnership with the WWF if you'd like. (Ever studied Brendon Burchards' Partnership course?)

    Think big and green!

But, printing can be disabled in a PDF, so the .WWF file is a novelty.

And, the statement is that you don't trust your customers to make their own choices about the environment, so you are going to make a choice for them.

And that kind of statement may not convince people to buy from you.

No, the statement is that he's giving customers who are interested in doing this an option to do it.

Yes, it's a novelty. Just like promotional pens people give out and so forth. But prospects who DO like it will be more likely to remember him and come back to him in the future.

Plus, it gives him something real to do a press release about. Instead of yet another "look at my great new product" new release, he's got a hook about a new green initiative he's doing...that just so happens to be tied to this product.

And while there are no guarantees, this is something local media may pick up on and mention--getting him some free press.

And something for a smart competitor to piggyback on, turning it around and making him look like the bad guy.

    Hey Dave,

I think it's great you're offering this what you're doing with the extra money and donations. I'm big into sustainability and love to see other entrepreneurs realizing that it can help differentiate their business and build loyalty with their clients and customers.

But I also think it's great that it's just an option, not forced onto buyers. Because even I would be annoyed if I got a product I couldn't print (double-sided, of course LOL). Sometimes, you just need to have it (or part of it) on paper.

And you're right--what some of the commenters are missing is that it's a statement. Sure, you can do something similar with Adobe--although you'd better let buyers know ahead of time if you are.

But this makes it obvious they won't be able to print and they'll get the satisfaction of feeling like they're doing something for the environment to boot.

    Here's a thought....

The people who think this is a great idea could
just refrain from printing their pdf files if they were
really all that concerned about it.

    I don't see the point.

I'd be your customer exactly once. I am the type who likes to take notes in the margins, highlight, etc., and reread if the information is useful.

But I'm not about to pay extra for the privilege of using MY ink and MY paper to print your document.

Going green is a fine thing to support but I think you're missing the boat on this one.

OK, I didn't realize until I read Tina's comment that I'd misread the original premise--I thought the people were paying a few bucks extra for the WWF version, and it was their money being donated. (My bad, time to get my eyes checked I guess!)

Yeah, the differentiated pricing is NOT going to go over well--like people have said, making people feel you're chiding them for not being green just because they may want to print something...especially when there is no legit reason to charge more.

The funny thing is, all our paper products come from tree farms. We haven't really cut down any more trees and we continually plant new tree farms to meet the demand for wood related product far into our future.

It pointless to not use paper under in the name of going "green". I think the same effort would be better spent in researching and coming up with viable alternatives to fossil based fuels, but not to save the environment. Instead to get us off of our dependence for middle eastern oil.

    Just my 2 cents.

PS: Would people be so "green" if the chance to make money on it were zero?

It still takes a lot of resources to cut down those trees, ship them to the mills, process them, bleach them, process them some more, then ship the paper.

I'm not saying where I stand on the issue, but rather pointing out that the angle of "saving trees" may not be the best approach, as that is probably the least problematic part of paper processing.

      All the best,

You have a point. However, the carbon emissions from the whole human race is minuscule in comparison to just one Volcanic eruption. With each eruption it sets back ALL the efforts made by greenies by 5 years.

Where is our effort, money, and time better spent then?

You can put a note in your ebook preface:

YOURCOMPANY has a commitment to environmental responsibility. Please consider the earth before printing this e-book.

Vs. forcing your paying customers to adhere to your beliefs or worse penalizing them by charging more because they don't share your values or because they like to print out their purchase to take notes and what-not.

OK, so if the "greenies" hadn't been making efforts, wouldn't it set everything back by 10 years?

The vast majority of green consumers are NOT granola die hards--they're "light" green who may be taking actions as much if not more for the sake of their kids' health, their own health, saving energy, preference for "natural" living, etc.

As for the subject line of "To ALL Warriors: Go Green and Save The Planet"

Sorry, but where does anybody get off telling "ALL Warriors" what we should do?

You know what bugs me? It's the implication that if we don't adopt this, then we are somehow not "green" or for pollution and destroying the planet.

    Wrong. Please try again.
