Office destroyed:(

Firstly, I'd like to say myself and my family are safe and thank those who have asked here and on Facebook. We're out of Christchurch and staying with my parents in Timaru.

We've been living week to week for a long while and I've been working on a couple of projects to get an online business up and running for a little while. Unfortunately all that is gone, with my laptop and my office destroyed.

I'm going to be relying on earning a few extra dollars a week for all the extra costs associated with living away from home and I think I'll have an hour or two each night to get some work done. In the past I've written articles and I can do research or some basic PHP programming. If anyone has some work that they need done they I may be able to help with please message me.

  • I hope you are doing alright mate. The main thing is that you and the family are doing fine.

I would recommend getting onto Freelancer and have a browse around for jobs and apply for a load -- Anything from PHP programming to Writing Articles.

    Good luck!
  • Keep that healthy attitude Rob, you got the right idea. Whats important is that you and your family are safe, and its inspiring to see you dealing with this obstacle and moving forward the way winners do. I wish you luck Rob!
  • Hi Rob,

I'm really sorry to hear about this, it sounds awful. Can't quite believe what I'm seeing on the News.

I don't need anything done right now but I will very much keep you in mind.

I know there were a few threads when the Aussies had those awful floods, in the off topic forum. I'd recommend putting a thread up there as well (not the same obviously) and sticking in a link to decent charity that must be collecting to help you guys. If there is one, let me know, I'll be more than happy to make a donation.

Best of luck to you Rob, the rest of the worlds thinking of you.
  • Thanks all for your thoughts. I've used vworker before(rentacoder) and will definitely be heading back there. Just wanted to offer my services here too.

I am lucky that I have got my family away to safety and have been in touch with all our friends and no they are all right(for a given value of all right). I'm also going to be able to resume my regular job remotely in a week or so. I'm just very aware that we were in week-to-week mode prior to this, and the next few weeks and months are going to be quite trying, so I need to pick up a little online work.

    • My heart goes out to you guys down there mate. I couldn't believe the news when I first heard it. There has been some really unfortunate deaths & luckily for me my relatives down there are fine. I'm glad you and your family are ok also.

Wish I could help you out. Can you write articles on the acne niche?
  • Hi Rob

I'm from Christchurch too. So sorry to hear your office was gone, but at least you and your family are fine. Take care.
  • Thank God you and your family are ok, I'm really sorry to hear about your office, but I'm sure you will come out of this one.

I know from experience how frustrating is to see your work, and your life going down because mother nature wanted so.

But also I know from experience that is possible to stand up and move on. Unfortunally there is nothing I can do to help you right now, only to say hang on and live on, my simpathy and prayers to you and all those people who lost some love ones in that terrible event.

    • Hi Rob,

It is good to hear that you and your family are safe.

We all tend to take our safety for granted, but life is precious and each day is a gift.

Please let us know if and how we can help, and what relief organizations are on scene and taking donations?

I don't want you or anyone else to take this the wrong way, but if you can write, you are in a unique position to report the day to day events of this tragedy from a personal perspective.

You could take notes now and write reports later on things you have noticed.

What kind of things to have on hand in case of an emergency.

How relief workers (or local governments) could improve their responsiveness.

What things people are in need of immediately after tragedy strikes so others can more appropriately help.

I am not suggesting these things as a way to profit from the misfortunes of others, but rather as a way to offer a first-hand view of events as they unfold, unfiltered through any media bias.

Should you decide to keep a diary or journal and later publish all or part of it, you can always donate the proceeds to charity.

Just some random thoughts in response to your post. Take care.
  • acur042 - I'll do you a sample acne article tonight and send it across.
  • My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there
  • Rob I'm so sorry for what you guys over there are going through but I am very glad to hear that you and your family are ok.

I hope things work out and that you can get your business back up and running.
  • Hello Rob. I feel sorry for you.
Why don't you get a "buy me a coffee" link at your first post.
I believe most of us will happy to buy you some coffee .

By the way, please PM me your article writing rate.
I need my article to get rewritten.....

  • Thanks for all the support and suggestions. Raja Kamil and Acur042, I have PM'd you my typical rates and a sample article I did for Acur042 in the acne niche. Obviously I have to be a little flexible with my rates at the moment, so if you have anything coming up I'd really appreciate the work.

A few people have asked about donation sites. The only one I'm immediately aware of is welcome

For those others from CHCH I just want to let you all know that I went to the civil defense center today here in Timaru and was able to speak to someone from WINZ. They were able to arrange a grocery voucher for us which has allowed us to get a reasonable supply of essentials, and enough nappies to last us the month! I really encourage you to take the time to visit and see if they can offer some assistance to you.
