Please Help - Which Laptop Should I Buy?

Hello Warriors,

I'm planning to move from my Desktop to a Laptop. I need your help in deciding which laptop should I buy.

Software that I mostly use are Market Samurai, Camtasia Studio, UAW, SENuke and few other marketing related software. I neither play Heavy Graphical Games nor do I use any Graphic Design Software.

All I want in a Laptop is performance and it should be light in weight. I will be moving a lot. I do not have any other specific requirements, no specific brand.

It is okay if you can point me to a Netbook. But I've never used it. Have you ever used it? Are you comfortable with it?

My Budget is from $650 to $750. And I'm willing to purchase online if there is a good deal.

I will really appreciate any help in this matter.

Thanks for your time!!!

Is there any particular reason you want to migrate to a laptop? Do you just need the portability, or...? Because otherwise laptops are always going to provide an inferior experience at a greater price for the specs.

Yes the main reason behind migrating to a laptop is Portability.

In about 15 to 20 days, I will be handling couple of offline projects where I'll be moving from site to site. It isn't that I'll be working there, but my presence will be required. And I won't have access to PC at any of those places.

So that may affect some of my online projects. I cannot afford that. I will need a Laptop. And to that matter it is okay if I can get a Netbook (Mini Laptops). But I've never experienced operating on Netbooks.

So I'm looking for some of your experiences with Notebooks and Netbooks.

Thanks for your reply. Appreciate that...

I think this is a fluid answer, that changes with what's on sale at any particular time.

I just bought a new PC and the best deals I found last week were at Best Buy.

    www.BestBuy.com

Shop around at some of the online stores and see what's on sale in your price range.

    Hi Kurt,

Thanks for replying. I think the sites you mentioned will be useful once I shortlist couple of Models. Right now I'm trying to figure out what laptop other marketers are using these days. So that I can narrow down my choices.

    Thanks for replying though.

IM doesn't take any special requirements...Far less than gamers.

The sites offer reviews, check them out for each model. I believe they'll give you the info you're looking for.

Here's a direct link to BestBuy's laptops in your price range. Read the reviews:

Well, performance lets ot the EEE line, even though it can do all you mentioned. Lightweight means you probably want to go with a smaller systemn that doesn't have a built in CD rom, that can save you 2 or more pounds. Saying to buy from DELL is kind of silly. For one, I have heard a number of bad things about them. Two, They sell some pretty SLOW systems also. Lastly, it doesn't answer the question.

And you limit your choices by setting a price. The price could be less than $500, or more than $1000.

I would offer choices, but today they vary all over, and I don't know your expectations. If you want windows to work well with several programs though, I guess I would suggest 4GB memory or more, and Windows 7 64bit. Again, that let's out the EEE though.

For IM purposes you won't need a powerful laptop. I'd go for a Dual Core processor and at least 2 gigs of RAM. That should be more than enough. I won't go with a netbook. I find it too small, especially the keyboard, for me to work comfortably on. I recommend Dell and Acer, the only laptop brands that I ever owned and both worked fine for me.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

Kindly excuse me as I don't understand that technical thing about EEE you Typed, but I think it's about IEEE. I'm not sure as I don't really understand that anyway. But I do need a built in CD ROM, to that matter DVD ROM. And if I'm not wrong, that's common in each Notebook, Netbook and even in Desktop right? I think you're talking about BluRay Disk I guess... Then I don't need that one.

Thanks for your opinion... I will read more reviews about Dell if I ever decide to go with Dell. Your opinion is useful...

      Kurt,

That really helped me. At first I just glanced, so I though I'll come back later when I decide which one to go for. But when I read the reviews, especially the Editor's Reviews, I thought I should spend more time here. Thanks... It was helpful...

Thanks for your reply. I did understand that IM Purposes don't really require High End Systems... But then I was quite willing to go for Netbooks...

So as I read your response, I'm now not quite looking for Netbooks... But I just read a review on HP Pavilion DM1 on CNet... They say It's more than Netbook but it is a Netbook...

Let see I'm not yet certain I'll go for that one... But I'm still keeping my options open.

I REALLY Thank All Of You For Responding!!!

Though I have a mac, I've always been a fan of HP laptops below 1k, the only thing I don't like is the bloatware that comes with them but that goes for pretty much any company. Toshiba is great too, never been a fan of Dell laptops or desktops.

Nope. When I speak of the IEEE, I mention the Institute! I was referring to one of the most popular, best made, and inexpensive netbook lines: ASUS Eee PC

To get better battery and component life, and make things simpler, they all use the ATOM processor. A processor INTEL made for UMPC devices. Only about 5 or so years ago people would be like WOW! NOW, it is boring, because they improved the efficiency of processors, and have multiple cores. It could be 5 years before the ATOM is equal to the standard notebooks today in performance. By then, the standard laptop will be a lot faster.

Some notebooks, and nearly every netbook DOESN'T have a CDROM built in. OH, and many desktops have that as a standard option of sorts.

Thanks for your opinion... I will read more reviews about Dell if I ever decide to go with Dell. Your opinion is useful...

Surprisingly, even some nice NOTEBOOKS now cost less than $500!

        Kurt,

I checked on this computer. Apparently, the processors ARE faster, though they draw more power. Their claim is 9.5 hours on battery. It has an 11.6" display. BTW the CD/DVD they offer, as an OPTION, is EXTERNAL! It's upgradable to 8GB.

So I would say their NOTEBOOK/NETBOOK designation is probably correct. The large memory, disk(though nearly all netbooks now have large disks), and processor speed APPARENTLY(this may not be so true in a matter of months), make it look like a notebook.
The long battery life, display size say netbook.

Anyway, it might be PERFECT for you, now that I know what yopu were considering. Remember the CDROM drive though. Basically, you are spending about $150 more over a midrange EEE system. You get about 90GB more disk space, the ability to add another 6GB memory, a slightly larger screen, supposedly a FULL keyboard(about 8% larger), and it is faster. All the other specs look about the same.

It's POSSIBLE. You have to realize that it CAN have up to 8GB, can have a larger screen and has a centrino core2 CPU solo or dual. GRANTED it is low power, but intels low power CPU now is supposed to be the ATOM! The ATOM has a battery that is like 1/3rd to 1/2 the size the timeline is supposed to be, but the average time is only 9hours. And that is mostly in power saving mode with low wifi use.

The specs look nice though. BTW CDROM is OPTIONAL!

Frankly if you are going to use the computer to take to customer sites. I had a acer netbook that I sold recently. It cost 309 and change with tax. Keep in mind that netbooks usually don't have more than 1gig of ram. Mine also did not have a a CD drive. All the software that I installed had to be downloaded. You could but a external hard drive, but then you are getting close to the price of a laptop. I have had HP computers since they started making PC (have a laptop and PC now) I think they make a very good machine for the money.

By the way I liked the netbook but I wanted a standard size keyboard, and I needed more ram for the way I work.

Actually, most WERE limited to 2GB. They often only COME with 1GB. An extra GB cost about $20, last time I checked. And MOST versions of windows REALLY only support 2GB, at least for processing. They saved larger amounts for a different license. It seems like many of the newer systems are limited to 8GB. I wonder how long it will be before they support the full pentium limit of 64GB! Because of the structure though, as I recall, the largest page is 16GB. BTW apparently AMD is limited to 256TB!!!!!!! IMAGINE! Lets see, if I had the same ratio of disk space to ram, that would mean I would have a 64PB disk drive! That is 64000TB! 64 MILLION GB! YIKES!

But YEAH, external drives cost SUBSTANTIALLY more than internal. They have to add the case, powersupply, interface circuitry, and the fancy packaging. And that probably costs close to $50 more, last time I checked.
