How my 1st WSO made $9,531 in 7 days

Hey Warriors,

I'm in the midst of creating a report on this, but wanted to stop for a second and pass this along. It's definitely not meant to boast...the whole thing came as a huge surprise to me!

First off, to be completely honest, this wasn't my first WSO. It was my second. I ran a WSO nearly 3 years ago. It sold 6 copies. It's somewhere in the forum if you want to look (but don't try to buy; I need to close that thing).

6 copies. I was crunched. I can't remember what Allen was charging for WSOs back then, but I'm not sure I broke even. I was disappointed, and thought after all the time I had put into things, it just wasn't worth it. I quit IM. I focused on my J.O.B.

A couple of months ago I came back to the WF after a couple of years away. I wrote a sad post. A couple of people gave me some encouragement. I decided to rededicate myself to IM. After all, I f*ing hate my J.O.B.!

What started as a little market research turned into weeks of research. I became consumed. "Damn it," I thought, "this is what always happens to me. I set out to do one thing, I get sidetracked, and I never finish!"

But then, like a light bulb turning on, I realized I might be sitting on something pretty interesting. Columbus was trying to find a route to India, after all.

I finished it up. I wrote my sales copy. I joined the War Room. I hooked up Aweber. I bought the WSO. Launched it. 1:11AM on Monday Mar 6, 2011.

All I wanted was to make my money back. I figured I was in about $100. Just make the initial investment back, I thought.

Within the first 24 hours it happened. I made back the $100. In short, I had made my first $100 online (screw 3 years ago, if you're keeping score)!

At that point, I was keeping my fingers crossed...maybe I could get another $100. Within the first 48 hours I had made $476! Hot damn!

I bumped the offer.

And then a funny thing happened. I went to bed late on Tues Mar 8. I was flying to Indianapolis the next morning. I got up and ran to the computer. Had I gotten any sales overnight?

And what I saw in my inbox literally made my heart stop. There were HUNDREDS of transactions in my inbox. I MEAN HUNDREDS!

My very first thought was, "Oh no, something's gone wrong! I'm going to have to explain this to Paypal." But it was real.

My WSO had been chosen as WSO of the Day. I don't know Mike Lantz (the founder of Warriorplus.com). But he plucked my WSO from obscurity and decided it was worth talking about.

In 7 days my WSO sold 878 units and made $9,531.

Now why am I telling you this (and I must apologize at this point for the length of this post )? It's not to brag. It's to point out something I believe gets lost along the way.

It is not the clever language or the "tricks" we pull on our unsuspecting prospects and future customers that make us successful. It is the VALUE we bring to them.

If the things you're creating or promoting can't answer the question: How am I helping [my market]? Then you're doing it wrong.

Focus on quality, focus on value. Think about ways to make people's lives easier. That's what I did. I focused on a single step of internet marketing and continued asking the questions, "How can I save someone time?" "Will this really help someone?"

I hope this was helpful! As I said, I'm writing a full report on my process, but just wanted to drop this into the conversation.

Thanks so much!

All best,
Bill

Thanks for sharing your success story with us. If at first you don't succeed etc, etc. So have you been selling this anywhere else like clickbank, rapbank or are you intending to in the future? You seem to have written a report everyone wants! Value is everything!

I haven't done anything like that yet. For $11, the WSO is of good value (or at least I'm being told).

I've never listed a CB, Rapbank product before. I'm not sure if a huge excel file would go over well there!

If you have some ideas for me, please don't hesitate to PM me.

      Thanks for the reply!

I'm sure that it would be fine.. on CB or RAP Bank.
        RAP Bank - even has a one-time listing fee that's $10 or $20 via List N Earn.
        It's all explained here:

You are right I always say to people to focus on quality and focus in one thing..

Most of the marketer jumps from one marketing to another marketing and keep on doing it for years time and than fails and than cries..

Knowledge never finishes and those people who cries they are not willing to learn from others because they want cash right now and overnight success..

Any way your story is very inspiration..thanks for sharing it..

Bill, never mind the report you are working on - that post is worth it's weight in gold!

If I may add "Provide value to everything you do as above not just WSO's."

The more value, normally the more $$$'s!

    Awesome work!

    Chris

P.S Looking forward to the report!

    Bill,

Great job on your WSO... It's quite a feeling when you discover your product literally exploded while you were sleeping. I remember when that happened to me and I sat there starring at my ClickBank account trying to breath. I was excited but man it really caught me by surprise.

    Congratulations!

PS. Great lessons in you post as well...

It really freaked me out, Mike! I ran into the kitchen and said to my wife, "Jenny, you've got to come see this!" I think she thought one of our little girls had stopped breathing! Ha!

This is something I think is really, really important.

I did several WSOs that I spent a few weeks making, and they made a few hundred bucks and maybe $1k if I was lucky.

But there was one particular WSO which made me $2k, and then later I did a JV that kicked it up to over $10k overall.

And what happened with that was I sat down to do something small - a guide to setting up products on E-Junkie - which just kept getting bigger... and bigger... and bigger... until it was this massive 162 page monstrosity of an ebook.

It made me more money than any other WSO I'd ever done, and when I hooked up with a JV partner who helped me do some badass copy and clean it up into a solid, reliable product... it outperformed my wildest dreams for that product.

I know this has happened to other people, too. It seemed small, but became big, and we kept going because we wanted the product to be as awesome as possible. Not to make more money, just to make the product fantastic.

And I got away from that, so things aren't so hot with the products I've done since. But I've been looking at it, and I think this is the key: start the product. Make it awesome. And it's done when it's done. Flash it up and toss in some bonuses and get some pretty graphics later, but for the MEAT of the product - just make it as awesome as possible all by itself.

Mike, it's a point well taken, and one that set my mind in motion. Getting chosen as WSO of the Day was the catalyst for the number of sales, yes. And the page views, which in turn create greater interest in your WSO, etc etc etc.

But what brought me back was "Why would Mike pick my product?" I didn't have anything to offer in return. I have to believe it's because my WSO brought significant value, and Mike wanted to share that with his subscribers.

Back to my original point, if you're not creating truly valuable services/products/content/software/whatever, you will not be treated as someone of value.

      Thanks Mike!

    Golden advice.

I think it was Brian Tracy who said that focusing on the money you want instead of the value you offer is just like standing in front of the wood-burner and saying "First you give me the heat, then I'll put in some fuel".

    Bill,

What do you think would have been your results if you DID NOT use WSO Pro & receive WSO of the day?

I think there is a big difference & a change at least on this forum of what has been motivating people to buy - not just the point on a targeted & values based product.
It would be good to get some real comparitive research on a regular WSO vs. using WSO Pro. vs. bumping, etc.

Darrin, excellent question, and one I've asked myself a few times as well.

I'll share this information: BEFORE all hell broke loose with the WSO of the Day, here are my stats (by the way, these metrics are available through WarriorPro):

      498 unique visitors
      49 sales
      $467 revenue

Depending on your perspective and experience, those 2 days could be considered a huge success or a massive failure.

      Let's talk about it!

Everyone is after everything. Look at a niche like "make money online." You could say I entered it just a week ago, and already make more in a week than many people make in 3 months.

The point is this: niches are just tightly configured ideas. Online, it's the keywords that separate you from your competition. Or the other traffic-driving tactics you employ.

Niches do not get oversaturated. Quality ALWAYS rises to the top.

      Thanks!

That's a very good testimony, especially for us Warriors out there who are producing WSOs for the rest of the internet marketers. It truly is beneficial to receive WSO Of The Day, and also to be able to do JV's with other people. Leverage your money and, more importantly, your business relationships. Hopefully your efforts will eventually pay off as they have in this case right here.

Bill, I'm impressed, inspired - in awe!

I've been reading Warrior Forum for well over a year now. Actually got up the nerve to post my first "comment" a couple of days ago. I've been gaining inspiration every single day.

I started off in IM years ago - had a website that generated a very nice chunk of cash on a monthly basis - a horrible flood, a bitter divorce and a few bad contract work gigs later - I'm working diligently on making my break back in - times have sure changed in the last 5+ years though.

Facing difficult times with a job downsizing - I've been investing many hours into research for a sort of epiphany I had a while back. You've really given me a lot to think about.

On a side note - Indianapolis? Really? Hope my fine state lived up to it's reputation for genuine hospitality

    Great sharing.

If you are or expect to be successful at first attempt then you are working against the law of probability.

That is 100% which is not possible.

Spoken to lot of rich and successful marketers, when they started, most of the time, their rate is 10 to 20% the most.

Yes, Indianapolis! Second time I've been there in the past 6 weeks. I still have a full-time job (working with non-profits to fundraise online), and I was meeting with the members of the Big Ten athletic fundraisers.

Keep at it. And absolutely let me know what I can do to be of service!

Guess those secret niches aren't so secret now...

Maybe a higher price with some scarcity would have worked even better for longevity and value for the client, particularly if any of them were micro-niches...

Either way congrats on your success. Now leverage it forward by creating/launching at least one WSO a month, pre-selling the buyer's list you've hopefully created from those 900 or so transactions with tease-mails prior to launch.

Place the next WSO online via an affiliate program at DigiResults simutaneously, advertise it as a hot "100% commission" product to the board, and let them blow it up for you as you create your first army of affiliates...

You're one step closer to guru-land, rock it!

This plan works for many top Warriors who churn out a dozen WSOs a year and hit easy six-figure targets. All you need is one hit, and now you've got it...the rest is gravy!

Craig, you've got it figured out! So many plates to spin...I'm just trying to get content produced.

But you bring up a great point, and one I really missed this first time around: Don't rush your products to market!

Completing the product is the first step. Once it's done, really focus on the best strategy to get it "to the people."

I finished the Niche List and ripped through some sales copy and popped it to the WSO forum.

As I'm now working through my report, I see all the opportunities I missed and the gaping holes in my sales funnel.

      Thanks for chiming in!

I'm in the midst of creating a report on this, but wanted to stop for a second and pass this along.
Well, congrats on finding something and doing some research, and doing well on the product BUT

I'm just going to be honest with you - please, if you are thinking about creating a report on doing a WSO to make this kind of money, please don't - unless you are giving it away.

Maybe Ive just seen too much - but I'm really tired of the WSO's on how to make cash doing a WSO and it all just seems old to me.

I think these also just send the wrong message to too many people.

I'm not meaning to call you out or make an example on anyone in particular - it is just really feeling monotonous.

Thank you very much for posting this.

I think your idea that one should not create products thinking how much money you can make, is a valuable one.

Rather your product has to focus on how much you can assist others. What your product does to help others achieve their goals is the most important idea.

Very inspirational. I also very much appreciate your sincerity in putting yourself out there. This is just an incredible WSO success story!

I salute you and wish you more of the absolute best!

    Hey Bill

That's a real motivator for us all. My first WSO, well, has been a little under satisfactory. I mean it has great reviews, but I think what I messed was the market research. May be next time, I'll look at a market that has more prospects. ;-)

Ok so here is the problem that most people overlook and something that should be pointed out. Here is a direct quote from the OP...

"6 copies. I was crunched. I can't remember what Allen was charging for WSOs back then, but I'm not sure I broke even. I was disappointed, and thought after all the time I had put into things, it just wasn't worth it. I quit IM. I focused on my J.O.B."
So by his own admission he could not make money and quit.

    Here is another quote...

"What started as a little market research turned into weeks of research.

1:11AM on Monday Mar 6, 2011."

Now he has came back and has done a lot of research. But has not made any money. These are his own words not mine.

Now lets look at the sales copy of this WSO...

"Discover HIDDEN, Untapped NICHE Markets that will OVERFLOW your Paypal Account with Cash!"
    That is the headline.

Do you see the inconstancy here?

I could continue to quote the sales copy with questions such as... How do you know what a hot niche is. Any one can put together a list of niches, but there is no way you could possibly know which one is a good money maker and which is not if you have never made money niche marketing.

Listen I want you to succeed, but you do not know the first thing about sucking cash into your paypal account from niche marketing. You know how to run a WSO and put together a product based on pure speculation and a little research.

If you are going to teach people to make money online you need to first learn how to make money online doing what you are teaching.

    Shannon

PS. Go ahead and flame me for pointing out the obvious.

Well, and the other issue which I missed mentioning - that "WSO of the day" thing. That is the real culprit.

That is a big old list - which in the real world outside of this forum would have been traffic he would have had to do quite a bit more work to achieve (IMO).

Shannon, excellent points! Scrutinizing my sales copy is fine. I tried to use headlines that grab people's attention. From my experience, that's typical in WSOs.

But I want to point this out: My WSO never claims to teach people how to make money online. It does not do that. There are plenty of courses and blueprints on how to do that.

My WSO simply aims to create a shortcut for marketers by showing the breadth of possibilities of the niches available to them.

Yes, getting chosen as WSO of the Day was a real blessing. No question about it. By some accounts, my WSO was succeeding before being chosen, but it exploded after the WSO OTD thing.

The larger point of my thread that perhaps I didn't make clear, had to do more with delivering value to your customers. It wasn't about "making money online" or the like.

Shannon, I'd also like you to review my upcoming WSO. Working through it, I'm focusing my discussion more on the product creation side of things (something I DO have experience in through my "offline life") and less on writing flashy copy.

Thank you both! You're obviously experienced marketers and quite active here in the WF. I hope we can keep up the dialogue!

Yeah. You expect everyone to write only about what they do for a living themselves.

Well, I make products. So I write products about making products. And that works out well.

Should I never write other products?

Am I incapable of knowing something works without actually making my living from it?

Let me tell you a story.

In 1998 and 1999, I was hired by a small company to port their DOS application to Windows.

The application in question was a software package designed for the express purpose of calculating child and spousal support in the state of New Jersey. They had a contract to do a similar program for the state of Montana, so they also wanted the system to be "generic" - so the rules for child and spousal support in a given state could be easily added to the package, supporting more markets.

Now, I've never been a family law attorney, nor have I ever been employed by a law office, nor have I ever worked with the family law courts in any state.

But I've read the crap out of the child and spousal support laws in over a dozen states.

Do you think I could teach a new law school graduate how to calculate child and spousal support in one of those states?

Because I never made any money doing it. All I ever did was make products about it.

I do think you are asking a valid question here, but I don't think you have the answer. What you want to know is how the OP knew his niches were good "money" niches.

But you've also answered your own question already, by simply pointing out that he never made his living from them... which is only one of many ways to know they're valid. So claiming he doesn't know what he's talking about - while certainly possible - isn't a fair assessment given the information you have.

I've done preliminary work on a keyword research project. I had to find out whether something was a good "money" niche. So having used my method to determine a niche was good, I turned to someone ELSE who makes his living on niche websites. I gave him the niche. He tested it. He reported back.

But he doesn't want to be identified, he doesn't want the niche he used disclosed, and he doesn't want his results repeated. So that niche can't go in the product, which is just fine because I can use the same methods and techniques to generate a lot more niches.

And you can claim all you want that maybe all those other niches will be crap, but that's why I do more than one test. If I can randomly select any niche at all, hand it to someone else who makes his living on niche websites, and he comes back to say "ya, that made some serious dosh, bra" - why doesn't that mean the niches are good?

Just because I didn't get any of the money?

      Seems a little shortsighted.

        Not really…

There is a lot of regurgitation in this market. So much that the information actually tends to change.

I tell you that Kevin Riley likes to wear diapers, you tell someone else he likes to wear diapers and after about 100 people later the news becomes Kevin Riley is a diaper model for ck.

Not exactly accurate but that type of misinformation happens all the time.

If you are doing simple research you will have thought that Kevin Riley is a diaper model when the truth is he wears them because he is lazy to go to the bathroom.

Now the people that hang out with Riley knows he isn’t good looking enough to model for CK so we know the truth.

I worked on the child support system in Australia. I didn’t have to know anything since most of it was already documented. I did learn how to calculate child support but that was because I was following specs and talking to experts that have been working there everyday.

I became an expert on the new system because I worked on it for a long time.

You have experience making products and know a lot of the pitfalls with product creation. You created products for others and then for yourself. You have experience.

The OP doesn’t have any experience when it comes to selling in any markets. At least according to his OP. He didn’t state he ran them by an experienced marketer and they looked like they would be profitable.

So people will be putting time and money into these markets. Not cool in my book.

    Bill, 100% correct,

IM has got a very bad name at the moment, over hyped, over priced products and affiliates who don't care about their subscribers are killing the business.

It's marketers who give value and actually care about customers that will hopefully prove that there is value out there.

Just because products don't get promoted by the big names it doesn't mean that the products are low quality or don't have wide appeal, it just means that we don't play by their rules!

Great job Bill. Looks like you were already getting a 1 in 10 conversion before the WSO of the day madness - pretty good in my opinion. I'm betting you could push the boundaries out and make even more money with your WSO by JVing. Check out the JVing section and see if there's anyone that would be willing to advertise your offer to their list. The reviews and amount of sales speak for themselves.

Wow, what a polarizing post! Not my intention at all. I thank everyone for participating--even those who find me full of crap.

I'm struggling with how to respond to some of the negative comments. I'm thick-skinned by nature, so it's not that I'm wounded by them. It's that I'm honestly surprised by the venom.

The WSO (as of this post) has sold 950 copies with 4 refunds. That's 0.04% returned. I'm proud of that. I take it to mean that the remaining 944 customers are satisfied with their purchase.

And from the reviews and responses I've received, I stand by what I produced.

Thanks for all the great advice within this thread, and I do hope my story provided a little inspiration, regardless of whether you would even want to run your own WSO or not.

Again, the point is to focus on creating value at all times. That can't ALWAYS be the case, I understand. Autoblogging, as an example, isn't really providing much value, is it? Backlinking campaigns that fool Google into thinking your site is of higher quality than another...again, not much value perhaps to the end user.

But these are the things marketers do to keep ahead of their competition. I'm not judging any of that.

But what we promote to one another--WSOs or JV opportunities--these MUST be of value. And if they are, I do believe we stand an excellent chance of being rewarded for that.

Good story Bill! And one I am guessing there are plenty of simular ones to. Certainly for me, I have done this time and time again, work hard at something, get sidetracked, or frustrated, move onto something else. I entered IM primarily to make money, I felt I needed to make money, in a bad bad way. It has been only reciently while focusing more on helping people, finding good resources and sharing them, because they are good, not because the commission is fat, that I have started to see money come in, and my network grow. Time, I think is often another factor. We all have busy lives (well most of us), especially if we have kids, a full time JOB, etc. It is easy to put all the IM stuff on the back burner. But you gotta stay the course, stay focused, on track and keep it front and center. Take it seriously and work hard at it. Find and offer value is just one part. There is getting yourself positioned such that people find you, there is web design, SEO, graphics, content, linking. It can become overwhelming that is for sure. But just like a big project you 'have' to do at the JOB, treat each IM project the same, like you have a boss to answer to and your career depends on it. Be your own boss, create your own accountability and then you might have a real chance to 'fire' your JOB boss.

    Thanks for sharing Bill!

Does that make you angry Shannon?
Nope, it does not make me angry. However, it sounds as if I have made you angry. I am simply pointing out the facts. The person admitted he does not know how to make money and then goes on to sell a product that claims to "flood your paypal account with cash."

I did not make that information up. It came from the original post.

So, if it is wrong for me to piont out you should not learn to make money from niche marketing from someone that has never done it, by his own admission, then I am a dirty roten scoundrel that is riding around on a high horse. And I will stay there.

Interesting read but the only problem with this sort of experience is that not too many people can replicate using the same exact formula - hitting WSO of the day for that matter.

It's the same as brainstorming for an idea that will go viral in Digg or Twitter - no matter how easy the psychology behind those things, the huge number of wannabe cannot just replicate their storied success.

I wrote the sales copy myself. Admittedly, it's not great . I reviewed lots of successful WSOs and modeled the structure and tone.

I'm working on a checklist right now. And there are plenty of others out there.

There are very few people who can truly write killer sales copy. Start with the product. If you create a genuinely good product, you can figure out the sales copy aspect of things. Hell, there are plenty of Warriors that would probably love the opportunity to partner on a great product.
