Japanese Warriors - Golden Syrup

This is a question for Warriors who live in Japan.

I have a friend over there who is trying to follow a recipe which calls for golden syrup.

Golden syrup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's not available in Japan. Is there a product that is a good substitute that can be found on the supermarket shelves?

Thanks :-)

Is it called 'treacle' over there?

The Wikipedia link you gave says it's often used as a substitute for honey and corn syrup. Maybe that works in reverse too?

Actually treacle is a much darker syrup & has a somewhat different taste.
Honey or Corn syrup may do the trick ( as suggested by Thomas), another possible alternative would be maple syrup ( yes it would have a different taste) but it may be a good alternative.

Audrie, I do not live in Japan but this may help a little.

My wife has successfully substituted golden syrup in recipes that called for corn syrup, so would think the substitution the other way would work also.

I would suggest your friend look for any corn syrup available and use
      it as a substitute.
