Joel - I always wanted the name Joel but my husband didn't agree. So our middle boy Corey has it for his middle name and he actually says he would prefer Joel as his first name

To be honest, I'd never give a kid a name that I wouldn't want to be called.

One couple I know called their little boy "Tiberius" because that was James T. Kirk's middle name and the dad was a Star Trek fan. No I'm not joking. The poor guy has to spend the rest of his life being called "Tiberius". If only the father had 'tried out' that name for 3 months by asking everyone who knew him to refer to him as "Tiberius", he'd have realised what a dumb name that was and called the kid "David" or "Matthew".

Another couple I know wanted to call their unborn son "Herbert". Thankfully it was a girl, so "Herbert" became "Harriet". Which to my ears sounds quite sophisticated.

While living in the "rust belt" in the north of England, I've heard mothers call out various names down the supermarket aisles to their kids: "Cassidy" (girl), "Reegan" (girl), "Teegan" (boy), "Kaylin" (boy). I think that some people treat their children as fashion accessories rather than humans, and forget that the name that they give to their children will last a lifetime. I can't believe that anyone who calls their son "Kaylin" has really sat down and pictured their offspring at the age of 75. If they had, I feel sure that they would appreciate just how uncomfortable a 75-year-old man is going to feel when he has to confess that his name is "Kaylin".

Really, the moment I read this thread and see it's your first son? why not John? Even though it will be after a hero ie: you, why not let your name live on and John, Johnnie, or however you might spell it is and always will be a captivating kind of name....

Ryder (getting to be popular but not so much yet) Jacob (always kind of thought provoking), I still think that John is just perfect... but I love the names I gave as well as Ryan, David, Cory, Nathaniel, and again for some reason I think Jacob sounds cool but John is my choice if you are taking votes.

However, after having 6 kids and only letting one be named by their dad and now I love the name "darci" girl by the way... I know mom should and will have the last say .....

IMHO, 'Jr', is so un-original!

Sure, it's seen as 'traditional' in some areas of the country, but taking the easy way out and not even trying to get original is just as bad as some parents calling their kids by those things they'll never have in life, like "Porsche" or "Mercedes"

I'm a "Jr" and hate it!

I always think my parents were to lazy to get 'creative' with naming me and went the easy way and just settled on 'Jr'...when names like Ty, Connor, Kegan, Duncan, etc.,etc., etc.. were there for the taking!

Personally, I tend to shy away from those all to common 'everyday names' like Michael, Peter, Aaron, Michelle, Lucy, etc.,etc., and would try and get original, but like it was said above, find one that YOU yourself wouldn't mind being called and then give it to your son!

Congrats by the way! 41 here and no kids...and probably never will, so I'm so envious of you!

Sons are extra special.....big congrats!
imo, staring at him a couple of days before finalizing name might not be a bad idea

I named my boy James Douglas he never took to a nickname, his suits him.
My brother is also named James but was always a Jimmy to us and now Jim in his profession.

Her name is bonnie -jean and I call her Bon... So does Darren (Graphics Genie-Partner) he suggested we call it Jon Bon Jovi... lol

He sometimes writes us both because she does billing etc... and refers to us as Bon Jovi. lol "Dear Bon Jovi, I hope you both are well...".

Hi John and congratulations to both.
I have got 3 children and since they are half Icelandic (I am Italian) I felt very much that I wanted to give an Icelandic name at least to the first one, chosen going back and forth on a list of thirty or so...
So the priority was a name that sounded well in both languages and English, I did not want it too long and preferably without "r" because I have a french "r" and if I can avoid it I prefer...
The second one we went for Italian, but still a name with a connection with daddys name. We had a bit of difficulty regarding the christening because I wanted it spelled with "c" instead of "k" and apparently this was a bit against the tradition of the church etc etc but eventually we got around that.
For the third one the consideration that prevailed was that he was so much like my father , recently passed away, that it would have been an insult to call him something else. So we went for my father name and his father name as a second name.
But generally speaking I like short names that flow well not too old fashioned but definitely not some of the nicknames you hear today.
For a boy I like the names Joel and Vidal (this last one I have hardly heard it before but it was so stuck in my head for some reason) for a girl Amy, Kelsey, Lisa, Hazel...

When choosing names - always look at what nicknames might get used. You don't your kid to hate you in his teens because you named him Cleopolis or Ezekial or Sue. With a 2 syllable last name, I'd use one syllable first name. I mean, Truman Durham just trips the tongue up. Then again, I do like Carter.

You could call out names and see if he jumps when he hears the one he likes....

Let your wife pick the name. It will show you love and trust her, and your son's name shouldn't make that much of a difference to you. You'll be calling him by his nickname anyway.

Chase is really nice. I like that alot. Im like you... I want some deep meaning. my wife is more sensible like Paul and John above... She wants conservative so as not to make him feel above the other children, or different... she says women love classic names, and his wife would want him to have a strong classic name... All of this makes sense... We must temper our passion with reason lest it becomes a flame that burns to its own destruction.

Congratulations!

When we were expecting our first born, we were told at the scan that the baby was a girl (back in 95 the scans weren't so clear as they are now). So we had a name picked out and what do you know, baby was a boy. We called him Luke.

Son number 2 we called Adam and we finally got to use our girls name when Juliette came along.

You'll know what his name should be when you have him in your arms.

Here's something to think about. I know you like true stories!

I have had 6 children and each one helped select the name when they were a baby.

I believe a baby is born with a certain spiritual knowingness and has a lot more going on in their little mind than we give them credit for.

For each of our children we put together a list of about 10 names we liked. Then, when the baby was extroverted and not hungry, tired, cranky etc we would sit him down in a baby seat. The other kids watched but everyone had to be still. Then one by one we went down the list of names and recorded the reaction. Try it - The baby will react!

Go through the list a few times and you will see a similar reaction to each name - even if you mix up the order.

My 5th child had the best reaction. Angela was one of the names we read to her. When we read it she puckered up her face as if about to scream!

Did that every time she heard the name. We scratched it off the list fast!

She ended up being named Bridget Katie-Ellen.

Two years ago, at the age of 11 she approached me right out of the blue and said "Mom, do you know why I didn't like the name Angela when I was born?" Shocked, I asked why.

She replied, "I thought you were saying "Tarantula"

She's always had an extreme fear of spiders!

Your child will live with this name for a long time, so why not let him tell you what name he likes?

First of all - many congratulations!

I suspect Jesus would be too much but I rather like Bono as a boys name! Stumpy would probably get him bullied, while Wolverine may subconciously make him overtly aggressive.

Wow! Way to come up with a "shrt" list. And yes it's missing the "o" to make it shorter. haha. Well, I've always like Jordan Tyler as a first and middle or Tyler Jordan I suppose you could do as well. It's up to you. You have 1,000,000 and 2 ideas now. . . And that is slightly unusual having grandkids that will be older than their uncle. I've heard of being close to the same age but I still find it odd in a good way. Congratulations.

So...John wants John or Jon....but I don't want John being that it's also my ex-hubsands name...
HOWEVER....I do like.....
John-David. So...the baby can have John and the hypen(-) from me...(yes I want him to have a hypenated first name)....

I looove Carter...b/c I feel like he is a Carter....therefore...I wanted...

Now...my son on the other hand...wants us to name him Anakin Skywalker...and my daughter says something that sounds like a vampire's name b/c she into vampire movies these days....
(see what i have to work with here??) anytime calgon....take me away!

I figure when he's born...I will...I mean...we will determine who he is....

Congrats!! I don't mind giving you my baby names since I don't know you. I won't give these out to family or friends though because they might end up taking them. I am pregnant with my 3rd child which is most likely another boy. We haven't picked out any girl names yet because we think we are having another boy. This is just our guess since it's too early to tell. I have a five year old son named Jacob and a three year old son named Caleb.

If this baby is a boy his name is going to be one of the names on the list below. I need to meet him and hold him in my arms before I give him his official name.

Levi is my favorite, but again we are not going to name him until we meet him. I hope it's another boy. I am not one of these women who just has to have a girl. I am happy with whatever I get and I love having two boys already.

Seriously we could tell him he was named after the founder of the "Great and Mighty " Warrior forum... and he would feel he had an inherent destiny to be a great rich marketer somehow.... or want to live up to that, and it would benefit him and his loved ones greatly. He could blow up TMF like that... ya know?

I think you should make him a 2nd since you waited so long to have your son! I only have daughters and if (God forbid) we had another child and it was a boy I'd name him after my husband. David James Barry. I don't know your middle name but it's always special to have a family name.

"Wolf Man" Jack... I actually talked to him on the phone once years ago. Telemarketing.... ran across lief garret too and almost sold him a website... just on a regular call list both times.

Also the manager of Electric Light Orchestra, and I actually DID sell one to Britney's spears back up singer.... (It was a list of entertainment company's).

Plus at night we can pretend we are the waltons... "Good nite Jon Boy"... lol. Lord knows I got alot of that from my brothers and sisters growing up. But I dont think many of you all know about the "waltons".

We can also call him JC or JD or ... who knows... for now he looks like my little Jon Jon. Im feelin it. Bon Wins... as if we didnt know that already lol.

Thank you soo much for the well wishes. He is certainly having his little issues crossing over to our side right at the moment, but Im sure things will be fine. In the meantime Im trying to keep up with my emails and various projects, the doctors say sometimes it takes a few days for their heart valve to close... so please bare with me if Im late emailing you... I suggest keeping the Kipling as a middle name, and using a family name (like John or another meaningful family name) as the first name. I also admire the author Rudyard Kipling. His name has a ring of adventure to it. Your son would then be able to be called "Kip" as a nickname if you wanted.

The neat thing about having a "famous" middle name is that the person has a choice of using it or not, OR revealing it or not.

Another idea: My personal favorite boy's name is Benjamin. Just saying. I also really like the poet Kahlil Gibran but not so much as a first or middle name.

Don't choose a too unique or too rare name. It'll scar his social life for good.
