Where you are from is of no consequence - it's how much talent do you have that you need to ask yourself. What languages can you write in and do a great job of it. There will be people needing writers for any language out there.

Get on oDesk.com maybe and give it a go! Maybe be Freelance... You could start your own blog at blogger.com and try to get business that way. In my opinion, just use the best grammar, spelling, and structure that you can if you want to write in another language aside from your own. Good luck!

Thanks to all of you for your feedback and encouragement, to those who were offended by the question I asked, Sorry. perhaps I would have asked, "Can I Write?"
I went to went to fiverr and said that I would do a 400 word article for 5 dollars. I have been doing some reading about keyword research, seo writing, article spinning, keyword density and I think I am better than I started.

Don't worry about offending anyone - I don't think you're question was offensive at all once reading your post which explains exactly what you were asking.

Just reading your post here you sound like you can write very well, so I think you should give it a go. You can start out on Fiverr or even offer your services here on Warriors for hire section. As long as you are confident to write on different topics that people might request.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been used to essay writing in school and quite did not understand what article writing for business really entailed. But am getting better and better. I was hired by a person who was doing a website to do the about us page and they said it was nice. I am still very new at Warrior and maybe that makes me shy off from asking work here but for sure I will.. with time of course.

      Jambo!

You appear to write very well, so go for it! Be aware, however, that you may have a few challenges. Sadly, Nigerian scam artists have made some very leery about conducting business with Africans online. While Kenya is clear on the other side of the continent, many don't care to realize that it is a separate country and may choose to bypass your services because of this.

On a personal note, however, I've had several private clients who have never once inquired about where I live. Although I live in America, I could have been writing from the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro and they would have cared less. You're doing well to learn SEO now as this will be most useful in marketing yourself to private clients in the future and it's unlikely many of them will question your whereabouts if you present a polished product.

Also, what payment methods are you able to receive? A lot of clients and websites prefer to use PayPal. You may find that some sites who hire writers to produce web content will not work with writers that live outside of the U.S., the UK or Canada.

I have a friend in Kenya who desperately needs an income. I haven't checked recently, but the last time I did I found that PayPal was only available on a limited basis to Kenyans. Do you know if this has changed?

I hope my post doesn't sound discouraging, because I really would like to see you do this. Last week, I read where inflation is at a record high right now in Kenya and food prices have literally doubled in Nairobi since February. I truly am concerned for your country (and my friends there) and would love nothing more but to know that you can create a living online.

My best to you and yours!

        Jambo Sana Kaka!

Thanks for your concern about Kenya but please do not pity us, do something!

First, things have continued to worsen on this side of the continent. Yes, the inflation has skyrocketed and the situation has been made worse by the biting drought in some parts of the country. It is reported that a few people have died due to drought related problems. The price of maize which is the staple food here has gone up to prices not affordable by the common mwananchi and rumor has it that maize farmers are hoarding their produce with expectations increase in the prices of maize in the near future.

Paypal is partially working in Kenya. You can only payout but you cannot receive payments. There is hope however with some banks having plans to partner with Paypal to facilitate this. Kenyans have realized that they can buy things online and so one of the things that one can liquidate balances in Paypal is to buy things online on behalf of them e.g domain names, themes and be given hard cash in return. So long as there is money coming the conversion is no problem.

The problem with most of us is lack of sufficient information about the opportunities that the internet can bring. Fibre cable was laid down in Kenya about two years ago but the cost of data is still up, I am using a modem as i post this and believe you me it will have consumed about 3 dollars when am done. Those are challenges that we are facing, we are so learned. We can speak good English and write as well but when we hear that the internet can offer jobs, we are excited but no one is there to provide the much needed direction and mentor-ship that that requires.

You appear to me like you have a deeper connection with Kenya and my urge is that please help your friend (s) with the information you got about the opportunities available online so that they can make something off the internet.

We have to get out of the "employee mentality" that has enslaved us for so long as Kenyans and the only thing to do that is more exposure to the internet which to me is a medium to self freedom.

I have been on the internet for an year now.. I have went to Odesk, Freelance and many other places that promise work but still haven't made a breakthrough. I am not giving up though and have resolved to teaching myself. And that's how I landed here at Warrior- to learn from the experts!

And trust me, I am learning.

So sorry that I didn't answer you sooner. I checked this thread for your return multiple times after my first reply, but I eventually stopped. I actually came back today to see if anyone had added anything new to the conversation because my friend's financial situation is getting more severe by the day. I'll subscribe to the thread to make sure I don't miss anymore updates.

How has it worked out for you? Any work yet? I certainly hope so! Reading your posts, you appear to be a very capable writer and I wouldn't be able to tell that you're not a native English speaker if I didn't know otherwise.

Absolutely, I'm willing to help my friend in any way that I can. For years, I've shared Internet opportunities with her, but with the PayPal issue and the high cost of Internet access, she hasn't been able to do anything. Sometimes she has enough money to search for a job and return emails, but her time at the Internet cafe is extremely limited due to her financial struggles. I've even taken to searching for jobs in the hospitality industry for her husband online myself and emailing results to him or sending them by sms because it's so expensive for them to search the web for jobs on their end. (BTW, he's got extensive experience in hotel and resort management, so if you know of any available positions in that industry please let me know. He's been out of work for about four months, now. Actually, he's willing to do any type of work at this time just to get an income, which at this point is literally at zero dollars per month for his family of six!).

Hearing about AlertPay being used in Kenya encourages me; as does your information on certain banks currently working with PayPal to make receiving money easier. I send her money and, in the past, have helped pay her oldest daughter's school tuition. Third-party remittance and bank transfer fees are costly, though, and we've been looking for alternatives for a long time. Although I send her money (and grocery vouchers via MamaMikes.com), they still struggle tremendously (and I do mean tremendously) to make ends meet. If they could figure out a way to have cheaper web access and receive payments, I know things could be better for them.

Anyway, thanks so much for coming back to this thread to offer hope and to share your enthusiasm. It's been a couple of months since your last post on this topic, but I hope you've found something and that you'll come back to share your good news soon.

          Take care!

          ~L.

          P.S.

Slightly off topic, but I've heard about call centers being set up in Kenya for overseas outsourcing much like companies do with India. Have you heard the same or seen any job ads for such there?

Ofcourse you can. You don't have to be a native to write articles. Anyone can do it. Try the bidding sites. Post your articles at article directories and blogs. This will build your profile. People prefer links to your sample articles than a word attachment.

Get an AlertPay account at alertpay.com - they accept all countries and you can tie the free account directly to a bank account and/or credit card - so you can both receive and send money.

It works pretty much like Paypal. Not all merchants use it as much as Paypal but there are more and more who do - at least it gives you an option you may not have had before.

Best of luck on your writing - it is one of the primary skills for internet marketing and everybody needs to either write themselves or pay someone to write for them.

One good way to show what you can do is to start a blog and write there and then offer your services to your readers.

I hear where you're coming from man. You write pretty well. Not that I am any good judge or anything because, I am just like you. I've been trying to improve my english since, I don't know, 10th grade when my teacher told our whole class that our english was extremely BAD (I bet she wanted to say sucked, but she couldn't say that in public, you know. )!

I started reading stuff, watching english shows, listening to english music blah.. blah.. almost anything that could be done. I learned one thing along the way. There are only certain words you can learn in a short period of time. So, reading up just to improve your vocab doesn't really help. You forget those words in a few days anyway. So, what can you do? Nothing. I mean, you can't compete with a native writer who has been writing for 40-50 years.

So, what do you do? You write with personality. YOUR personality. That's easy to do. Just write as you talk (or 'would' talk in my case, cuz I don't really speak that much in person). It's simple and it's you. And it makes writing so much easier. Nobody can write like you, you know. Not even Tina or HeySal.

Just a tip perhaps of no use to you. But, it helps me a lot so I thought I should share.

      Sumit.

PS. I like hang out here in the OT a lot for 2 reasons. 1) The people here are awesome and speak high quality english. So, you get to pick up on stuff. 2) Teasing Roaddog helps feed my appetite.
