I would appreciate any help on my inability to get sound on mic. or speakers.
Have tried M.S 'fixit' to no avail.

Vista Home Premium Edition, 32 bit on Compac Pressario Laptop.

Think this problem may have occurred after a MS windows update.

Cannot get any sound from speakers or headphones.
Can only hear hum, crackle from both speakers when plug lead into front of laptop.

I have speaker volume in on position at high setting and can see the levels moving when playing a music file.
The sound button is not muted in Windows Media player.

I have gone into Devices and have a yellow check against the item
Portable Devices
Microsoft WPD FileSystem Volume Device.

When properties viewed it reads 'This device cannot start, (Code 10),check for solutions
Did that, but nothing came back.

The drivers here show as being up to date.
C;\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\UMDF\wpdFs.dll
and
C;\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\WUDFRd.sys

I've tried looking for new drivers, says all up to date; tried disabling, log off, log on, re-enabling this folder (and have tried that also
with the folders in the Sound and Video group.)

The following Sound and video and Game controllers are all showing to be working o.k
with all drivers being up to date.

Conextant High Definition Smart Audio 221
NVIDIA High Definition Audio
Screen Camera
WsAudio_DeviceS(1)
WsAudio_DeviceS(2)
WsAudio_DeviceS(3)
WsAudio_DeviceS(4)
WsAudio_DeviceS(5)
WsAudioDevice_383

W.S Audio Device (4) is the only one showing a moving sound level in the playback panel

In the recording panel, all the devices lines are shown to be working, only no (4)
is showing a moving signal wave. All midi devices are showing 'currently unavailable.'

It would be great to get my system back to normal...

Thank you
Barb

My first advice is to get rid of Vista. IMO worst since ME

That being said, try this, go to the drivers thru Devices, click uninstall drivers...reboot.

I know it sounds strange..but someone showed me this once and has worked for me more than once.

not guaranteeing anything, but what do you have to lose?

    Good luck

You are officially my new best friend! Thank you so much, that did the trick and I am now enjoying my music playlist with renewed enjoyment of life. Also, have not been able to get on with my training videos for I.M. I have been wrestling with this for 2 weeks and didn't have the cash to get a tecchie in. Am ever so grateful to you for responding.
      Lots of hugs and cheers.

August 15th, 1995 I took a lawn chair and a blanket down to the local (long gone) Computer City store and got in line at 3:00 AM to buy a new piece of software called Windows 95. I had a hunch the internet was going to change things but I had no idea how it would change the world. Somebody from New Zealand asks a question, somebody from San Diego answers and its just a routine day in the forum. How cool is this place.

When you hear someone telling you what YOU can't do, they are usually talking about what THEY can't do.

So are you going to listen to the other piece of advice? It seems even windows 7 is better that vista. MUCH better!

And WOW, that IS weird, removing drivers to get it to work. But HEY, they moved the security, used by VPNs, etc... from the core to the firewall in vista. STUPID! That ALSO means that some software will fail UNLESS the firewall is engaged, and many first ask to disable the firewall to test/install. They ALSO INTENTIONALLY disabled the TAPI device, so it will NEVER work. I'm unsure if they fixed THAT garbage in Windows 7, but at least things work now. After vista, some tapi software uses a new device
designation, and other software has also been modified. That took YEARS though.

And realize that none of the stuff I spoke about had to be changed because of a new version, and it certainly wasn't done for speed.
