Just a quick what OS do you use? Also, do you find the software you want available for it?

Given a few options, wasn't going to go on forever so it may not be listed but the main ones are there

I'm using Gentoo Linux full time.
    I find/have all the software I need.
I might make a Windows partition in 11:11:11 when the 'Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim" comes out, if I have problems with Wine. I used to be a hardcore gamer back when 'Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion" was popular few years ago, and I'd like to continue with the series.

        Don't be afraid!
You would be in nirvana if you switched.
Just don't use both as you'd be called a switch hitter then and you would NOT want that

I was a hard-core XP fan myself, never even bothered with Vista because of all the problems with it, but 'Yes' Windows 7 is all that. I would highly recommend the upgrade. Everyone I know that switched is very pleased.

I have wanted to go to a "mac" for a while, or at least get an iPad, but I fear that I know NOTHING about any of these devices. I know A LOT about the PC but I know VERY VERY little about MAC computers "as a whole." Any advice on where to read some tutorials or forums on the "settings" and the general problems I can expect to run into with an apple computer? Thanks!!

NOT that they don't have issues too despite the propaganda on TV, you would have considerably much less headaches and hair pulling with a MAC.

Less headaches=more $ in your pocket due to not having to spend it on Advil.
Less hair pulling= more $ too as you can cancel your Hair Club for Men membership or if you're a cheapo, that continuity membership for Hair in a Can you belong to.

This is very true. The most common reason I hear for people converting from PC to Mac is that they are tired of getting viruses (I could write a whole book about why this is usually the user's own fault!), but there are viruses written for Mac, too.

What about Linux, and the other 'alternative' OS's, though? I personally know of only 1 person that uses Linux, and he has never had a virus. Are there virus' written for these other OS's?

It is usually the users fault yes.

The main reason people that run OSX, Linux and others OS' don't get virus' is simply because people don't bother writing them for these platforms. Why would I bother writing a virus for a system that has such a small market share?

The way the systems have been built and the way the user accounts work it make them generally more secure. But in my opinion that's not the main reason they are less prone to virus'.

Interestingly they had a challenge at one of the defcon meets (I think) to hack a windows box, OSX box and Linux box. The OSX one went in the shortest time, then windows and within the time limit they didn't manage to get into the Linux one, more time and I'm sure they would have though.

If you want to try another OS just do it. It's easier to say that with Linux as you can get it for free just to try. I don't like Apple myself but their products are quite easy to use so you shouldn't run into too many issues with them.

  • I thought these looked a little too close when I took the poll the other day. Now that more people have voted it looks more accurate. I would bet, by the end of voting, the PC will have a still bigger share, though.

Keep in mind that you can vote for more than one OS in that poll. I use Windows, OS X, and Linux on various machines, for example.

Multi-OS users play hob with the impressions one gets, I'm sure.

Windows 7 is much better than XP. But in my opinion the jump from XP to 7 is no smaller than a run from windows to another OS.

I'm surprised there aren't more mac users, happy about the amount of Linux's and always good to see some BSD.

People that chose other, what are they? Solaris, chromeOS, hurd, haiku or even more crazy like amigaOS?

I agree. As far as how it runs, it's much lighter, faster, and more secure. I've never know anyone to get a Blue Screen of Death with it yet. The most important changes you never actually 'see', though. It does take some getting used to finding things, because a lot of things have been moved around. For instance, I still use the 'classic' XP setting for my Control Panel.

I've been using Linux since '93. Remember when 9600 baud was screaming? A 500 MB hard disk was huge? Anything over 256 M RAM automatically qualified you as "power user"? And the complete system you really wanted cost close to USZ$2,000?

Since the latest version of WIndows always comes pre-installed, I get the best of both worlds after I repartition, max out RAM, and install Dragon on the Windows side. After that, I never have to boot into Windows for anything, do have to put up with the latest virus from budding sociopaths around the globe, or the irritating nag screens from Redmond.

Since I'm running 24/7 I have lost hardware over the years - a power supply, fan, etc. - but never any problem whatsoever with Linux or any of the free software.

Sidebar: Windows 7 is the first version that hasn't crashed - and I'm talking BSOD - within 45 minutes of non-strenuous use. That I attribute to the raid on Silicon Valley a few years back to commandeer as many Unix programmers as possible to "save" NT.
As I understand it, the blue screen of death is no more and has been replace by the "new and improved" black screen of death - but I haven't seen it.

Currently using Windows XP, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I like to to do my IM on three or four machines depending on the project and doing so on Apple hardware would be prohibitively more expensive. Money aside, I would like to try an Apple laptop. Additionally, I would like to use Ubuntu more as well but since more apps are available to run on Windows, Windows 7 does the trick.

Mac OSX - love the multitasking and pure ease of use. When I need to go PC, I have Parallels loaded with Win7. Sometimes I also use my wife's Win7 laptop; although it's fast, it still feels cumbersome and just so difficult to do simple things. Prior to switching to Mac, I was on PC's every day for over 15 years. Been on a Mac now for 7-8 years; I think that's 102 in PC years. Lol
