Because it seems like the new Tablet P.C's can do everything but kiss you on the lips, are they replacing Laptops. I just bought a Laptop recently and feel I might have wasted some money?

Any thoughts, opinions, advice or sympathy?

I kind of hate tiny little screens myself.

It will likely be a few years before the average tablet can replace the laptop, and I like normal keyboards better than the regular tablets. What I like are the hybrids. Laptops that can look and act like tablets.

Personally, for anything other than checking e-mail or time-killing web-browsing, I prefer an good-old-fashioned, not-portable-at-all PC...complete with a great big screen and an equally big keyboard. I prefer using a mouse too; touch-pads just make my fingers and wrist sore after half an hour.

    I must be getting old.

I agree. Those tiny little flat keyboards and mouse pads don't do it for me, either. I also use 2 big screens, so...

If you're out on the road, obviously a laptop is a necessity, but at home I'll keep my desktop any time.

As for whether tablets will replace laptops, I doubt it. Everyone was told that the iPhone would change the world, too, but look at it now. I'm not saying it's not a nice phone, but its biggest fans were the people that are always chasing the newest technology.

Has anyone else seen the computers that are a laptop and a tablet combined? I think that's the future for both of them.

That's what I meant by hybrid. Yeah, a laptop with a touchh screen where you can spin the screen around, and fold it over the keyboard, and have a nice tablet. You can spin it around, and have a nice display. You can spin it the other way, and have a laptop.

I think they should have a USB port myself.
They don't have adobe but I'm sure there are apps for that.
ACTUALLY, many DO have USB! Every tablet, until recently, HAS had adobe. The reaon why that changed was because almost everyone was INTEL and supported windows or Linux. NOW, there is PROPRIETARY linux, CLOSED arch, android, apple iphone OS, etc....

I love my Ipad when i'm on the go and need to take internet with me so I have a screen bigger than my phone. However, if i'm at home... I prefer a normal laptop or my desk computer to get work done.

I have a 10 inch laptop and I need it for typing. Yes having a tablet that comes with attachable keyword will help get rid of laptops.

I think it must pass a few years until the tablet the tablets pc will replace some of the laptops market share, but I think that laptops will also have a big market share. Tables have a small size, and have not so good performance, so they are not competitive compared laptops.

If it's just a touchscreen, perhaps that's true, but you can hook an external keyboard to it and type on it just like on a laptop.

I have an older 2nd generation Tablet PC and I love using it for writing. Using the built in Wacom digitizer and pen stylus, I can write directly on the screen & the handwriting recognition capability of Windows 7 can automatically convert my handwriting to text.

Although handwriting is not as fast as typing, it does feel more natural to me. I feel as if my writing and my ideas have a different quality when written by hand. I tend to express myself differently and think of ideas differently when I write using a stylus rather than a keyboard.

Everyone is using those newfangled iPad tablets. I'd get one if they had a good handwriting recognition system.

i hate them myself, they are a nightmare to fix (unlike laptops), and i cant see battlefield 3 running on any tablet anytime soon??

they are practical for some things such as hospitals but if im honest they are just gizmos.

    Ken,
    Not for writers.
It might yet. I have a Zagg keyboard (from Logitech) for my iPad, and it's almost like using a regular keyboard. Very close. Combine that with the fact that the whole thing is smaller than a normal spiral notebook, and you've got a very nice machine for working away from the office. Or in it.

A little more security in the holder, a solid-state drive, and this thing would be almost as useful as a good netbook. A bit pricier, but not beyond reason for a productive tool.

The big thing is that it's an intuitive and easy to use tool. My Dad was never really interested in computers. I looked up the baseball scores last time they were here to visit, and he was fascinated by the thing. Spent a half hour just looking things up on Google. Got into a trivia debate with my brother and asked me to hand him "the pad." Fired up the browser and found the answer (he was right, as usual) himself.

It's the convenience, I think. You can take it anywhere, and it's not threatening enough to invoke the technophobia so many people suffer from. It's a handy tool, rather than a boat anchor. And it's social, in that you can use it in a group, rather than having to go off to a desk somewhere.

I think they'll advance to the point where you can replace desktops and laptops with them for most people's usage. And a lot of people will.

Oh... Don't forget that Granny can chat face to face with her grandkids with it with very little learning curve...

No way; I don't intend to change from my PC or laptop. The keyboards are just issue, as Ken said... keyboards IMHO are essential for writers.

I forgot to mention... If the power goes out, or the cable connection is down, it's nice to have the extra backup connection. I could turn off everything else that's on my UPS and have Internet access going for a couple of days. Maybe more.

Plus, I can't take my cable with me when I travel. The iPad... Yeah. And, with the 3G service, it's a lot more secure out of the box than public wifi.
