Do you listen to music while you work?

I know some can only work in silence, whilst others like loud music. what do you like?

Personally I prefer it quiet. Another time Sinatra. At the moment it's Jeff Buckley. I have found that the stuff I'm writing has an influence on what I listen too, I once spent two days writing when I mainly listened to Eminem. I wish I could remember what I was writing at the time. Strangely, I love rock like Led Zep but cannot work when they're on!

Perhaps I'm just odd.

I prefer the quiet, but have been known to crank up the 80's tunes sometimes!

I don't listen to music when I work out but I do listen to music when I work (at least some of the time)!

The strange thing is that I find music distracting when I'm at the gym, but it helps me concentrate when I'm working. I suppose it makes the time fly by!

It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm writing, I like the silence. When brainstorming/thinking, I like the 80s music going... maybe even a little late 70s disco.

Like some others with work like writing, I love the silence.

With other things that don't require as much thought I have music going, youtube videos playing off to the side, or watch tv/movies.

It's odd, I actually find that I can think better with some light music in the background. I usually come up with better ideas.

Silence works best for me when I write.

When working (out), I love fast listening to moving House music, it keeps me motivated. House music doesn't have lyrics. I tend to get tired of listening to the same words over and over again. Since I workout every day, I'd have to change my music almost weekly.

In the car, I can think about my writing projects while listening to my favorite 60's, 70's, 80's radio station.

At home, while marketing my products and services, I love listening to either jazz, pop, or more zen, tranquil music for relaxation.

I find my creativity soars when I listen to music. So I try to keep the music on at all times. It keeps my energy going and gives me an added boost.

However, when I have others around me while working, I will turn the music off, because it can become bothersome to them.

Like everyone else it depends. I listen to music while I'm brainstorming, but if I'm writing or recording a video I like silence.

A lot of the times I turn on the music and forget about it. You gotta love Itunes!

Yeah, I tried that a while ago and it did have a positive effect on me, but only a slight one.

Usually I work in silence as I feel it helps my mind to stick to one thing and keep the ideas flowing, but while doing boring repetitive things like cleaning up HTML code then I crank up the metal

I would have killed for silence at my old job (muzak at grocery stores gets old). But now that I'm home I can't work without music. It used to be that I'd need quiet for writing but now I pump the tunes while I'm writing as well.

Music is my passion so I can't go long without it.

In work in construction and find that this is a place that should never have music. Many construction workers bring radios to the job site with many different tastes in music. The more different tastes the louder the music. If you can't hear people because of loud music then accidents happen. Therefore I feel radios should not be allowed on the job site but, they are fine at home.

It's strange that when you make lists, as I did when I started this thread, you always miss something out!

I forgot Springsteen, The Cowboy Junkies and the band I'm listening to now - Mazzy Star. I also have a an love of 30s/40s dance band music and French cafe music of that era.

Have I got unusually catholic tastes or does everybody love such diversity?

Well, it's all changed for me, I have no choice in the type of music I hear whilst working.

My wife has been belly dancing for eight years (not non-stop) and has now started giving belly dance lessons 3 times a week.

The result? She has to practise to Arabic music so I get to listen to it whether I want to or not! Fortunately I do like the music so it's no hardship.
