Hi,

I think i have some kind of virus or malware on my computer. I cannot run any anti virus software nor download anything from the Net. When i try it simply stops.

If I try to click on many programs nothing happens. Skype, my computer, my documents, othe programs it tries to open them but simply stops... ..

Any ideas what i can do?

Thanks

      OK,

The best thing you can try is to use some other computer ( another one you might have, a friends, or try the local internet cafe) then download Malawarebytes and trojan rootkit scanner - download these onto a usb stick.

Start your computer in safe mode,( hit the F8 key when it starts up - not just once but repeatedly) then try and load the programs from the usb stick onto your computer and run them.

Once you have got your computer back under your control, run both of these programs every day for at least 30 days: malawarebytes first, then trojan rootkit second.

No guarantees, but a good starting point.

Anyway if you don't happen to have a thumb drive
If you have spybot, run it in safe mode, if you don't have that run whatever will start in safe.

If you don't have it you should, some people underestimate spybot, but if you look close he has kept up with the rootkit problem pretty well.
I've gotten rid of things using spybot Avast wouldn't.

Anyway run whatever you have on the computer that will run in safe mode, first.

        Good luck

I did a "boot time scan" using "Avast" software one time and worked out some weird bugs.
I think you can find info to do that online pretty easy but if not let me know and I will search my messy hard drive for the directions I saved.

I actually sent John an eight page report I wrote on removing bad things from your computer (and making money doing for others if you like),that may or may not be included in the soon to be Mega WSO. It was his and Darrens choice to include it in the one or hang onto in case we did something else later down the road.
That doesn't help you now though.
Try what Janet and Roaddog recommended.
    Good Luck.

Any online scanner I know of has to download a file first.

If you have access to the internet via a friend's or a family member's computer, and a thumb drive or a CD/DVD burner, I would be happy to post a list of programs to download, install and run (assuming it will let you install still). I can almost guarantee they will take care of any problems you might have.

BTW, you shouldn't run more than one A/V at a time as that can sometimes cause problems, although I've never personally known AVG to bump with anything. It's an excellent free option.

I find it very odd that one of those didn't catch this virus before-hand, though.

Online isn't going to work for what you have - it's embedded in your registry.

If you can do what Janet suggests, you need Kapersky TDSSKiller to get it. Seriously - that's the only program that removes some of this stuff.

Right now, you want to dump all of your system restore points. Once you get done with getting rid of this thing - dump again and set a new point - but those files are going to be infected to heck and back.

      Two questions/answers,

Do you have more than one user on the system? If so go into another user and try to download TDSSKiller. Sometimes you can get through the partition. IF you can - you need to download the program then "move this file" to the admin user, then go into safemode to run it.

Second - can you get to any email from safemode? If you can - go to another computer and download, then send it to yourself to that email box.

If none of the above work -- then you need to go to MajorGeeks.com and do a "Hijack This" report and send it to them.

What you cannot run in regular mode may run in safe.
Safe mode only lets the most crucial programs run.
9out of 10 the program that is infected will not be able to run, thus letting your bad guy killer find it...on occasion it may take, not all but enough bad files out so that you can continue hitting it with something else.

There are times you might need to reinstall, but that would be a last resort, not the first course of action.

It depends how paranoid you are I guess, I "touch wood" don't have to do this very often at all and once in a blue moon because of a virus/other crapware .

Use those emails to email TDSSKiller to yourself.

I also forgot -- if you do "control + alt + delete and pull up the menu of your running programs - you can see what's running and shut it off temporarily to allow yourself to get something downloaded. It worked for me when I needed it to.

Another note people -- get the programs you need to defeat this kind of stuff downloaded on your computer BEFORE this stuff happens so you have it to use in safe mode any time you need it. Once something hits and starts denying access to stuff, it can be to late.

    Just repeating this

I had this and I restarted constantly several times at least by just powering down the computer with the power button. When eventually the processes stopped then I noticed the virus software that this virus installed or pretended to installed didn't come up then I used Spybot Search & Destroy which found the virus right away and removed it.

I would advise you to do the same and see if that works for you.

spybot gets some of the stuff that these things download but they don't get the downloader itself.

What many of these things are (although, not all) are downloaders. They get into your registry (i.e. they are rootkits) and will download other malware and viruses. Avast, Malwarebytes, spybot, etc will take out the stuff these things download - but they don't get the system 32 rootkit that installs them, so you are stuck cleaning out your computer every day or two.

I used 5 different programs to clean everything off of mine when I got hit. First Avast - which, by the way, will tell you to run it in safemode. It will also tell you it's got it when it doesn't, just the stuff the downloader is bringing in.

I used - 1. Avast, 2. Malwarebytes, 3. Sophos 4. some free program someone suggested but I can't remember the name. and last I ran the Kapersky TDSSKiller that took out the actual rootkit.

Malwarebytes and AVAST are always running on my machine -- the others I keep on there for emergencies in case my screen locks me out. Also use Crap Cleaner once a day to get all of the cookies and bad registry keys off. Dcombobaltor keeps my dcom turned off (great backdoor for about anything that wants in and it's got no purpose). XPantispy keeps other backdoors closed.

The viruses today are lethal and you can't just run a scan and presume everything is all good even if it silences the problem for awhile. Clean that machine out and get your prevention set up and ready to fight if you get hit.

Sal you know I am your faithful fan, but,

This is why people underestimate Spybot, it is far more than another free spy checker. If you take a close look it has some very good advanced features.
I have tried dozens free paid and indifferent..this has proved the best.
I had a really bad virus, that was downloaded by my little Beethoven..started showing things on the screen, messing with virus alerts, wouldn't let me open documents etc...etc... etc .Avast missed a lot of files, I didn't get rid of every thing until I ran the advanced parts of Spybot (still free)in safe . It also has a great immunization feature and many more.

        from 2008

We're excited to tell you that we have improved the scanning for rootkits. Beginning with the first updates in march we have added new anti rootkit plugins for Spybot - Search & Destroy. Apart from that we have also developed a new tool - the RootAlyzer
Rootkits are a technology that is more and more often used by malware to hide themselves on system level, making themselves invisible to standard tools. Our new plugins help Spybot-S&D to detect this malware, and our RootAlyzer shows you anything that uses certain rootkit technologies, even if it's not in Spybot-S&Ds detection database.
You can apply the new plugins for the rootkit search by just updating your Spybot-S&D as usual.
The RootAlyzer is a single tool which goes through the file system, the registry and process related lists. When you start RootAlyzer, it performs a very quick scan of a few important places, taking about a second on modern machines. To check the full system, you have the possibility of choosing a Deep Scan.
Currently, the RootAlyzer is a work in progress (with a new project tools category in our forum to track bugs and feature requests), but it's already helping to easily locate most of the current malware rootkits. It is compatible with Windows NT/2000/XP/2k3 and Vista. If you like to check out the new RootAlyzer you will find it

Hi sloanjim, i hope you're doing fine rite now with your computer. I would like to add, before you're cleaning the virus/malware/spyware..
    0. Unplug your internet connection.
    1. You have to TURN OFF your SYSTEM RESTORE,
    2. Then restart your PC, after you're seeing the opening screen just press F8 (choose SAFE MODE),
    3. You must prepare a new antivirus installer on your CD/DVD/USB/FlashDisk)
    4. Re-install the antivirus, scan & clean your system.
    5. If it didn't work, restart your computer,
    6. Go to the BIOS opening menu (by pressing del), choose CD/DVD as the first rebooting drive (i have the rebooting CD/DVD contains some antivirus installer)
    7. First thing to do, you have to make a rebooting CD/DVD contains a clean antivirus. If you didn't have the CD/DVD, perhaps you can go ask your friends , no need to buy.
    8. Next, after you have it, after step no 6, choose the CD/DVD as the first booting drive, go scan and clean your harddrive. The question is, what kind of antivirus suits for your needs? i am using SMADAV, you also can use your clean AVG (on the CD/DVD) or the other antivirus.
    9. If the antivirus has cleaned the system, make 2 accounts in your system. I pressume you're using Windows OS. First make 1 account as the Administrator (with password) then 1 account as the Limited Power User (with password) for daily use. Only use Administrator to install program, not for using everyday.
    10. Restart your computer.
    11. Log in to your Administrator Account, you can check your system, if you're sure everything doing fine, TURN ON THE SYSTEM RESTORE, name it with OK, CLEAN, or whatever you like.
    12. Log out
    13. Go to your Limited Power User Account, plug-in your internet connection
    14. My Security Tips :
    - Never open a strange link, or untrusted promotion about money, game, ect
    - Update your antivirus
    - Only use Administrator to install, use Limited Power User for daily use (in this account, you still have the ability to install, simply by right click the installer file, then choose Run As ... (choose Administrator, fill the password)
    - When you're browsing with Mozilla, you can have the specific plug-in that kills script
    - Buy original software, or if you don't have the original, make sure your software is clean from virus/malware/spyware
    - I recommend you have to install Comodo Antivirus with Firewall, or you can have others program that check every connection inside your PC/Laptop, it prevents untrusted program running backdoor/behind the screen.
    15. If the step 1-14 didn't work, unplug your harddrive, scan it by a clean PC/Laptop
    16. Or the last one, the last action, Re-install the Windows OS (make sure you've already backup your DATA).
    17. Thank you
