Where's a good place to move to?

My boyfriend & I are currently living in tallahassee & the mutual feelings are... we hate this place. The only jobs out here are waiting tables, bartending, escort services, stripping, & cashiers. The what would be decent paying jobs anywhere else only pay $10 if you're lucky(my friend actually works in the intensive care delivery ward at the hospital & makes $8.25/hr if that gives an idea of how bad it is). The everyone out here is just trying to make a quick buck & screw anyone because these college kids have set the standards pretty low. Apartments & houses out here are outrageous given the pay standard. $600/mo will get you okay quality, but compared to making less than $1000/mo working full time it doesn't cut it, especially when adding on $130 average/mo on electric(& that's with bare min usage, things unplugged & breakers off). I'm about to graduate massage school in 2 months & we're hoping to be out of this god forsaken place when that happens, but we're not sure where would be a good place to start out. My boyfriend has experience in any type of fixing/ repairs so he can pretty much get a job anywhere. Anywhere but here. I've lived in several places in OH, VA & FL, so I know where NOT to go back to. Any suggestions? I know it's hard everywhere, but this place is downright rediculous since everyone feeds off of the college kids. Thanks in advance for your thoughts

well, weather is definetely a plus. I'm a summer florida baby so I can't STAND the cold. Snow is pretty & all, but get me outside in it & I want to shrivel up & die!

Economy... well, it kinda sucks everywhere. I'd like a place where the pay is comparable to living expenses, taxes, ect. Virginia wasn't so bad in that department, but after being in the military, we kinda wanted to get away from all the bases & uniforms. That & the angry people. I swear everyone in Virginia is pissed off about something. anyhoo, t's never really been this hard for either one of us to find a job since we both have a wide range of experience/ skills so I don't think it'll be as hard if we get out of this place.

As far as atmosphere, neither one of us really care for the bar/club scene.
I don't mind clubs every now & then, but my idea of a saturday night doesn't always involve getting hammered & having some creeper hump my leg for 2 hrs, lol. I guess we're more "nature" type people(fishing, hiking, camping, ect). Of course things to do are nice, so maybe a mix of outdoors & attractions would be nice.

I've thought about moving out towards california, but he's not down with the "hippie scene". That's what he calls it anyways. Apparently, massage is pretty big out west so I think it would be good for my practice, but convincing him that there's more than just hippies & gay people out there is a bit tricky...

It's been hard to come up with something we can both agree on. When I ask about where he would like to go, I get the typical guy response: "I dunno":p but he shoots down all my ideas. He's mentioned Alabama since we've got a friend out there, but I'd have to go back to school for another 150 hrs to be able to get my massage license & i'd like to be able to start making some money when I graduate.

It's funny because earlier this week, I was just looking at houses in the Tallahassee area!

I like the small town feel of Tallahassee, plus used to hang out there in college since I had friends at FSU.

However, unless you work in government or education, then the job market is not good.

I love Florida but unemployment is very high right now.

As a massage therapist, couldn't you get a good job at a resort? There are a lot of tourist spots in warm climates.

ummmm... tallahassee is actually a pretty big town. & it's overrun with bars, clubs & fast food chains. I don't know how long it's been since you've been here, but I know my mother & I lived out here about 20 yrs ago & it wasn't the same as it is now. It's kinda trashy. There's advertisements on the side of the road for exotic dancers, garbage everywhere, & all these kids have really shabby attitudes. Some people are happy with Tally, but we're just not some of those people & unemployment is high pretty much everywhere, but all the jobs here are geared towards lazy buggers who have no skills! & as far as working at a resort, I'm open to the idea of working anywhere as a massage therapist(withing reason of course). There's plenty or places to work as an MT, the problem is where we want to go.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I've noticed you stereotype and/or generalize a lot. You said, "I swear everyone in Virginia is pissed off about something." Well, you've just sterotyped the whole state. It's simply not true. I live in Richmond and there are wonderful people here.

You said, "I've thought about moving out towards california, but he's not down with the "hippie scene". - You've just taken the largest state in the whole country and summed it up by "hippie", which just simply isn't the case. It is multi-cultural and extremely diverse. You'll get different types of people in different regions of the state.

I'll come back to VA, but specifically Richmond. I refer to this place as a "little" big town and an absolutely wonderful place to live. There are no extreme climates. You're 2 hours from the beach, 2 hours from the mountains, 2 hours from DC and 2 hours from the lakes on the border of NC. The cost of living is reasonable. The traffic's not bad. It's not as trendy as florida but you're not paying for it either. There are a lot of nice people here. You still have the southern hospitality much of the time. You asked for suggestions... I'm recommending Richmond, VA.

One other is Charlotte, NC. It's a lot like Richmond. Slightly bigger so possibly even more job opportunity but otherwise, very similar. Maybe you can do a Google search on where some of the stronger economy's are right now. That might help too.

    Good luck with your decision!

ok as far as the stereotype thing you mentioned, I wasn't trying to make a statement about the ENTIRE STATE, but from living in portsmouth, norfolk, newport news, & virginia beach, I noticed people out there are not the nicest bunch. To me the polite thing to do is say "good morning" when walking past someone on the street, but people will look at you like you've got an extra arm hanging out of your forehead. And newport news is in i think the top 25 of US cities with the most crime.
& the "hippie" thing... in case you didn't read the sentence after that, i said "that's what he calls it anyways". He even calls me a "hippie". Quite frankly I'm insulted because you took the time to block out certain parts of what I said for whatever reason. I don't care about race or cultural diversity. I'm friends with "gangsters", "punks", "preps", "stoners", "jocks" & whatever else anyone wants to call them. I try to get along with everyone as long as they have a good personality. You want to talk about cultural diversity? Join the military... That's about as diverse as you'll get. I know, I did my 4 yrs.

  • East Texas and I do mean really east, close to the LA border the cost of living is pretty cheap, but doubtful it can beat Vegas. Now reading this, I want to move to Vegas!

I live a few hours east of you on Amelia Island and love it. Tons of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, kayaking), near the ocean, airport 30 minutes away, and close enough to Jacksonville to visit but not face the traffic every day.

The economy isn't great but my roommate makes a good living as a massage therapist running her own business, though it did take several years to build a client list.

We do have hurricane season, though. But everywhere has something, I guess.

I have been living in the Nashville TN area for quite some time. Moved here from Canada so it was quite the culture shock.

Winters are pretty good. When it snows, or even threatens to snow everything shuts down.

Spring is a little hairy this year - tornadoes and such.

We are actually in the process of moving this summer to a beach house in Melbourne Beach, Florida. Semi-retirement as it were. Or, Spring Break Forever!

I've only been living here for about a year now & it's already getting on my nerves. I've lived in about 20 different cities & this place is quickly becoming one of my least favorites. The job market sucks something awful & it's even worse now that the college is out. Craigslist has become totally worthless... nothing but scams, adult films, & "dancers". I really would like to find a place that I wouldn't mind settling in for a few yrs tho.

I might have to look into that. The weather in FL is definetely a plus even with the humidity, so I wouldn't mind staying around the state for a bit. & Fl is a pretty good place for massage too.

Good luck with your move. I've heard Tenn has an okay job market compared to the rest of the us. Texas too.

Thanx everyone for your input by the way. Still haven't made a decision, but it's gotta come sometime
