A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide." And for plenty of good reasons, since:

  1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
  2. it is a major component in acid rain
  3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
  4. accidental inhalation can kill you
  5. it contributes to erosion
  6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
  7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
  • Forty-three (43) said yes,
  • six (6) were undecided,
  • and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.

I heard a person on a talk show advocate that. BTW...... You left out that it is a very widely used industrial solvent, destroys homes, and kills perhaps thousands every year! It also causes food to spoil quicker! 8-) How about that it leads to disease? It is the MAJOR chemical vector for malerria, etc...! SERIOUSLY, without it, mosquitoes can't get past their aquatic stage. Adults may never lay eggs!

HOW gullible? The claims ARE all true! It goes to show that not all things are merely good or bad.

I've been online too long. I saw the subject line and thought, "Is this dihydrogen monoxide?"

        That's scary.

Your right Steve, I found this version on Wiki and like it better.

      Dihydrogen monoxide:
      • is called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain.
      • contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
      • may cause severe burns.
      • is fatal if inhaled.
      • contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
      • accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
      • may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
      • has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
      • as an industrial solvent and coolant.
      • in nuclear power plants.
      • in the production of Styrofoam.
      • as a fire retardant.
      • in many forms of cruel animal research.
      • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
      • as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Extremely as I didn't realize what it was the first time I saw the chemical name. I just assumed that it was some fake made up name with trumped up conditions to freak people out with fear. But in the end I'm just left with the ability to laugh.

WOW, I FORGOT about nuclear power plants! Look at Japan! It caused EXPLOSIONS! People have probably gotten BURNED! People are fearing the spread of nuclear radiation! YIKES!

And did you know that it has been known to KILL plants!?!?!? It can EVEN cause root rot, and damage foliage.
