Ashton Kutcher?

Anyone else see where Ashton Kutcher has been signed to replace Charlie Sheen on 2 1/2 men?

How do you think this will work out and how would you write Ashton into the show and Charlie out?
#off topic forum
  • It might be a brilliant move as long as they adjust the character to fit the new actor.

The supporting actors on that show have often carried the show for me - I was a bit tired of the Sheen character as it was predictable.

I think with the ratings of the show - it's worth a shot for the network. It might improve the show and add some years to the run.

I'd make him a relative or best friend of sheen with some of the same personality traits but some new ones as well. I've read in the past that many long running series pre-tape segments where a leading character is removed or killed off or whatever as "insurance". Wonder if this show has a segment like that in the can?
  • I think he will be a good replacement. I would have preferred Rob Lowe, but Ashton is still a good choice.
  • What do they do with Charlie? Put him in the Betty Ford clinic? Kill him off? Have him join a monestary?

    • Would be a challenging job for a writer, wouldn't it? Don't think he gets killed off -this is a comedy, after all.

Maybe he inherited a huge estate in another country and gone there to collect and check it out. Maybe he won a huge trip or got transferred at work temporarily to another country (does he work?)

I think if they use this it will be a scenario that can be reversed if for some reason Sheen ends up back on the show. If the show limps with a replacement and Sheen regains his brain, nothing is impossible on TV.

On the other hand, if Kutcher is a hit (and he could be just that), the "transfer/move/emergency" could become permanent in the script.

If they do this - I predict the first show at least will have great ratings.

  • How about Charlie loses his house in a poker game to Ashton, decides he has to change his life and becomes a monk?

Asthon is a "lovable" two-bit con man, with a pinch of Eddie Haskell tossed in, who cheated Charlie out of the house.
  • Nobody could replace Charlie in this show. Ashton is good but not for Charlie's role
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Ashton won't be the "same" - that's true. But I can see him in a role similar enough to make the show work. At least the show will retain eye candy value. LOL.

I'm thinking that Charlie will probably move to England and marry Rose. Not sure how Ashton will enter though. Charlie probably sells the house to a relative or friend (or his mother does, anyway) and that's Ashton's entry. Will be interesting.

Sometimes new characters just don't have the chemistry of the old ones and it kills the show. I hope this one goes. I love the show and I love Ashton, too.

    • Fade in:

Ashton is a cousin...Ashton is a Hollywood cougar wrangler.

Charlie finally gets his comeuppance and is attacked and mauled by one (or all) of Ashton's cougars.

He has to move in to take care of the household along with all his cougars...

      bedlam ensues....
  • Maybe they'll pull a Bewitched, just replace Darrin and hope nobody notices...lol

    • There have been many series in the past where the lead character was replace more than once and the show went on just fine.

Everyone is replaceable - when you forget that fact you could say you're pulling a "charlie sheen".
    • omg that's right. man i loved that show. but with the darrins... they at least looked alike. charlie and ashton? not at all. hopefully they won't have he play the charlie sheen role and will just have he be a new character.

poor charlie. hilarious but so very very crazy.
  • Ashton sucks as an actor. He's sucked since That 70s Show, and everything since. Eye candy don't mean nothin' when you can't act. And he is definitely NOT a comedian, for sure, he's proved that a number of times now, too. Those two parts were actually written with Charlie and Jon in mind. And the chemistry between them was perfect. I love the show, too, but I don't see it making it past a couple of shows without Charlie, unfortunately.

The only thing that MIGHT save the show is if wo/men start tuning in for the 'eye-candy' factor, but that would be really sad. Ashton might as well go back to modeling underwear, 'cause he can't act his way out of the proverbial wet paper bag.

I hate to say it, but I'm not even going to watch the show anymore. I guess it's back to re-runs of "My Name is Earl".

    • I don't think Charlie Sheen has "acted" once since he's been on 2 1/2 men.

As you mentioned, the character was written for him and he's just playing himself.

That doesn't mean that I think that Ashton Kutcher can successfully replace him. It'll take some good and creative writing, and chemistry with
      the other cast members.

  • Ashton kutcher, and APPARENTLY his NATIVE persona, is similar to what one might expect from a guy like Charlie Sheen! I could see him as a nephew, son, or even friend.

REALLY, they aren't so much different. Look at the 70s show(he is CLEARLY not the dolt he is there), the camera commercials, that film where he played the new husband, or punked. ALL THE SAME! Kind of arrogant, careless, raunchy. Much like Charlie Sheen!

    Steve
  • wow. my fav. Cant wait to see him doing this character
  • AShton is not even close to Sheen. I'm rather disappointed. Didn't watch the series much before, definitly not going to now. :/

    • I rarely make predications about shows but I'm making an exception for this one.

The ratings for the first episode will be off the charts.

Once people see that Ashton sucks as an actor and even more so doing
comedy, the ratings will plummet and, after half a season, the show will be
      pulled...if it lasts that long.

I saw Ashton in one movie, "The Butterfly Effect" which, given the subject
matter and the fact that I'm a super sci fi/fantasy fan, should have been a
fantastic movie, was almost killed because of his lame acting. The movie,
for me, was only saved because the story and supporting actors were so good.

2 1/2 Men...it was fun while it lasted, but this is just doing an autopsy on
      an already buried body.

  • To be honest, I don't think it will last. Ashton is very funny, but filling those shoes is gonna be tough. Good luck to him though.

    • Big Time FAIL.

No one can replace that character or Sheen's personality equally.

      Kutcher = NOT WINNING

He needs to stick with making new versions of Punk'ed and other stupid (non-funny) MTV shows.
  • I would like to see "2 1/2 Women"

After the fall of the real estate market in Florida, a prudish businesswoman and her young daughter are forced to bunk with her promiscuous man-killer entertainment-industry sister.
  • I dunno, charlie was a big part of the show if you ask me. But if anyone could do it it would be Ashton. He is a pretty talented guy, watch "THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT" if you haven't already.

I think that it could go either way really, depending who they execute the show for now on.
  • It actually takes some talent to be the idiot in comedy, and you've got to admit that he does a pretty good job of it. I think that with the help of their writers he could help push the show along for a few more years.

After all it's quite obvious by now that the writers were more than half of what made Charlie's character funny.

  • Bradley, Steve -- I have to disagree with ya on this one.

I LIKE Ashton's acting. I'm not the type to watch something just because I like the actor - it has to be good. Otherwise I would have seen every one of Depp's movies. He's just done a lot that aren't in the scope of my interests.

I saw Butterfly Effect and really liked the movie. If you didn't like it, I don't think any other actor would have saved it for you.

Of course - Ashton did play the part of a moron for a long time so maybe it's just getting over that type-casting is why people don't like him.
    • [2] replies
    • Sheen's reaction was typical of him these days - snide and snipey.

If sheen returned - I wouldn't watch it at all. Have never been a big fan of the show but saw it occasionally. I'd watch Ashton a couple time to see how it goes and keep watching sometimes if it works.

Wouldn't be surprised to see another one or two new characters also added in the new version.

    • Like I said, he isn't the dolt he played there. Frankly, I don't think sheen did enough to be THAT different from kutcher. From what I have seen of kutcher, and I have seen him in over half a dozen different cases(the dolt was only ONE), he could fill sheens shoes IN HIS SLEEP! He doesn't even need to ACT(Meaning change something about his persona). He only needs to read soome decent lines, and be HIMSELF! Some roles just FIT!

      Steve
  • A big part of why this show was so popular was due the fact that it was somewhat based on Charlie Sheen's real life. Ashton Kutcher? No Thanks!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • Right. That was my point, too. Those 2 roles were written specifically for Charlie and Jon Cryer, based on their actual personalities. There are a lot of real-life traits that are reflected in their characters, which is a big reason why they play them so well. I just don't see this working out well at all with Kutcher.

I think Steve is right, though, in saying that the first show will probably be a ratings monster just because of all the publicity with Charlie and now Ashton.
      • [1] reply
    • How about they base Ashton's character on his own life...Maybe have Ashton marry an older women...Like the mom Evelyn so Ashton becomes Allen's step dad.
      • [1] reply
  • What??????

2 1/2 men will never be the same.

    Devid
  • I didn't think Charlie Sheen could be replaced on this show, he is such a huge character that the show just wouldn't be the same without him. I never imagined that they would replace him, however, hearing it is Ashton Kutcher I think he might do ok. I think he's quite a good choice for a replacement and will do a good job.

    Having said that.........

I still don't think it will last that long. It just won't be the same. I could be wrong and I hope I am, but I think this is the sort of show that once you replace one of the main characters it will just never be as good.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Steve - I agree with ya. But I'm also thinking what Sheryl said is a real possibility. America is used to Charlie as Charlie. They might be able to pull off enough of a change in the story that it will work though. They have to do something about Jake soon, too anyway. He's going to be too old for the part pretty soon.

Wow Kurt - that would be way twisted. Not sure America could handle that one. I know I couldn't.

    • Yeah, the shows days were numbered from DAY ONE! They had the play between cryer and sheen, and the naive nature, and conditions for the kid. The kid was EVEN named in the title as 1/2 men! The kid is ready for an older role and soon may be expected to leave, lest there be ANOTHER aspect that people are probably ALREADY tired of. And the action between cryer and sheen can only go so far. And this might even be the thing that started sheens departure. He left on a HIGH note.

So YEAH, it may end soon. It may not even get ONE more season. I am just saying it probably won't be due to kutcher.

HECK, on that 70s show, I thought it was silly, etc... Did you know that ashton kutchers girlfriend on the show even lied about her age to get on?!?!? She was too young, and they had to make accomodations. And I think it was ashtons first acting job. Still, they managed to pull it off. Outside of being a dolt, and hamming it up, I think kutcher just played himself.

BTW Charlie sheen was similar when he was younger!

      Steve
  • Apparently it will be a whole new story, and suppose to be very funny, nice the series is being saved though
  • i swear these guys are turning into full on marketing gurus these days.

Well i do not know if you call mr sheen a genius, as he is hyped up on a concoction of drugs, however I just cant hate the guy. I mean do you watch two and a half men. Classic, pure raw comedy at its finest.
    • [1] reply
    • I watch it ENOUGH! They started when Angus was about the age he was in see spot run. That was TEN years ago! The last episode I saw, it was CLEAR angus was at least CLOSE to that much older. HARDLY 1/2 a man! Lets see oct/93. see spot run he was approx EIGHT. NOW, he is approx 18. YEP, his age is showing! Time for him to get a job, assuming he hasn't gotten one, and at least TALK about moving out, assuming he hasn't. 2 men, and a young adult in the same place is just not right.

Maybe it is time to change the title! As for sheen? He's been lucky. OBVIOUSLY, in some films, he has even played someone just a LITTLE different. In some cases, he has played someone a bit likable. In some cases you feel he is just acting and ignore it even though that really is his personna.

  • Personally I love Ashtons acting, in all movies. But its like anything in life...You cant replace the irreplacable
  • There's been some successful character swaps on TV before...

    Shelly Long/Kirstie Allen on Cheers

MASH had a bunch, Trapper/BJ Honeycutt is one.

And how can we forget Chester (Dennis Weaver) being replaced by Festus (Ken Curtis) on Gunsmoke or Goober replacing Gomer on the Andy Griffith show.

    • Character replacements can work if it's not the main character. I don't
recall one show where the big star of the show was recast and still made
      it.

In fact, when Winchester replaced Frank, the show got better.

Had Alan Alda left MASH I don't think the show would have survived.

Some people are just not replaceable.

Look what happened to 8 Simple Rules after John Ritter died.

Had Adam West left Batman, that should would have never made it past
      season 1.

  • I suppose it couldn't hurt. It may even make it better.
  • Seems that if the show was tired anyway, this is a great time for Charlie to bow out and for it to take a new direction. Maybe Charlie knew that it was running down and just thought he'd get some extra publicity on the way out. There might be some life left with a new mix. Anyway - I only watch 2 shows. American Idol of all things - and that's about over for the year, and 2 1/2 men - and I'm hoping that it does run into a good show because it's my mid evening diversion and break from this damned machine. There isn't anything other escape material on that I find consistently funny.
  • From a post this morning on Celebrity Gossip:

  • They should probably cancel the show, which would be a total shame because it's awesome.... but awesome with Charlie Sheen, they need Charlie. Without Charlie the show must end.... you can't just bring in a new guy and expect everyone to take the show seriously. Ashton is a good actor but he can't take the place of Charlie - no one can!
  • Ashton Kutcher is too much of a Charlie Sheen light... they should go with someone completely different, like... I don't know... Pee Wee Herman.
  • Looks like the producers really don't like Charlie any more and are planning to kill him off so he can never appear on the show again.
