I don't have a pet at the moment as four kids are enough work. Years ago we had a huge black Great Dane who was extremely affectionate and used to try to sit on your knee....

A few years back my Dad got an Alsatian and was trying to think up a name. I reasoned that any dog he had would have the life of Riley and so he ended up being known as Riley. My Dad later decided to get a second Alsatian as comany for Riley. I thought that as Riley was an Irish name the his companion should have an Irish name too...Seamus sprang immediately to mind. So my Dad eneded up with a pair of German Shepherds called Riley and Seamus. For some reason he was not too amused.

I have three cats. Their names are Mowm, Runty, and Jazzy. We used to have another named Itchy, but he got really sick a few months back.

They are coming up on their first birthday soon! They are especially cute this time of year when they can lay in the sun. I just feel bad because they are shedding so bad... I have to keep brushing them to help get rid of the extra fur.

Currently, I have a Belgian Shepherd (or it could be a Golden Lab/Shepherd mix) who I met at the local animal shelter. He was nabbed as a stray, had been in lock-up for at least 3 weeks, and soon proved to be very friendly. After I sprang him, he showed me how well he had been trained. He also quickly revealed how easily he could sail over a 4'foot fence.

He was about a year old when I got him, so I think he's about 7 years old now.

I also have 2 budgies, but they do not have names.

If you want help with your dogs, I have lots of tips on my Dog Talk Weekly Blog, along with some pics of Tyler and my neighbor's Chihuahua who loves to wander over and tease him.

I have six cats, eight rats, four mice, one hamster and one wild mouse I rescued from the mouth of my cat on my kitchen floor one cold January evening. I work part time for an animal shelter, hence all my pets - I take in the animals no one else wants.
Rats are awesome pets, they are gentile, affectionate and they bond with their owners very quickly and they can be litter box trained very easily.

I couldn't agree more, dorim, I've had many rats over the years and they are seriously under-rated as pets. They're just delightful.

Rats are very social too! If you only have one rat, that rat will want to be held and pet all of the time! When I was younger I only ever had one at a time and that rat would play with me for hours. When I ended up having to get a job, I ended up getting a second rat so that he wouldn't be lonely.

At one time we had 4 dogs.

A Border Collie and 3 Bichons.
The oldest Bichon was Belle. Undoubtly the smartest dog I have ever known.
I could,(and have thinking about it), write a book about her.

About 3 weeks ago we adopted two 1 year old Beagle mix sisters. Suzie and Sam.

They're always getting into trouble, but they're coming around.

I can't imagine being without at least 2 dogs.
One of goals in IM is to buy enough land to open a no-kill rescue shelter.

House training is harder than we thought it would be. This is our first indoor dog.
A little advice about that. At 3 months a puppy doesn't have much self control (babies don't either).

Whatever dogs eat and drink processes through their body quickly - so time trips outdoors a few minutes after eating/drinking. When he does his business, immediately praise him and take him back inside. That helps him connect what he did to being a "good guy". Right now, he's a baby and it will take time for him to connect what he's doing with where you want him to do it. It will be a while before he's physically capable of waiting for long so frequent trips outdoors will help.

If you catch him starting to make a mistake indoors - immediately carry him out (don't wait for him to finish). Don't be harsh with him about "mistakes" - just be very positive about "successes".

Be patient - he's just a little guy. He'll figure it out. If you can confine him in a small room (hard floor) or crate for an hour or two and then take him directly outside, it can be easier as dogs don't like to soil their immediate area if they can help it. If you use a crate, don't overuse it.

My dog, Doodah, was not easy to train. He'd been abused and then had been living on the street. I couldn't get through to him what I wanted him to do - then one day I praised him at just the right moment and you could almost see him thinking "THAT's what she wants me do". No problem after that.

Last New Year's Eve, My dog, Jack, was out of control. He loves people and knew that the party was gonna' start in a little bit. He was hungry, though, and needed a bite to eat before the festivities. He saddled up to the table, tucked his napkin neatly into his collar and was ready for a bit of Jack food.

The morning after - well - he was feelin' it! Ah, a dog's life it is!

Not really, but there is a Chihuahua and a Border Collie
that live at the same address I do.

They both believe they have a pet who performs quite
      a number of "tricks".

      Their pet can:
      (1) dispense food with outstanding regularity.
      (2) Open doors with ease so they can go play in the yard.
      (3) Take them for fun car rides.

Oh yea....he also is quite adept at throwing balls, frisbees and sticks

I used to have a pet Labrador Retriever, but I sold it a few months ago when I had to move to a smaller condo unit. I wasn't allowed to raise a full-sized dog here. Now, I have some fishes in a small aquarium. They're the only pets I can manage in this space.
