Improving PC Performance

I'm getting ready for the yearly trip down to Mexico, so I'm trying to get my laptop back into working order, well, less slow anyway.

So, I'm defragging right now (Windows 7 Home), but it's been so many years since I've actually done this, I can't remember what else I should be doing!

So help a fellow Warrior out and let me know what software I need to get, or what I should be doing to tune this baby up. Ram will be ordered tomorrow, but outside of that and defragging, what should I be doing?

  • Run, "msconfig," and go into the start-up services and turn off anything that starts on boot unnecessarily. Avoid anything by Microsoft.

    • Hi Chris,

One of the products I like and use is Registry Mechanic by PC Tools. It does a great job of fixing, defragging and generally cleaning up your registry.

I bought it because my wifes computer was working about as well as a flat tire.

Ran the software, cleaned up hundreds of registry errors and the machine ran smooth again.

Now we use it regularly on both of our computers.

  • I think you need a new i7 now
  • Thanks guys! I've got my registry being cleaned as we speak, and the software's found over 1,000 errors... That's pretty ridiculous!

That's what I get for never doing this before though!
  • I was thinking of what advice I could give, when I read Bill Farnham's reply.
I've never heard of it, but I might give Registry Mechanic by PC Tools a try.
I better search for it online to find out if it works on Vista.
