Thanks for the Post Patrician. It's a damn risky post - and it will disappear. Count on that one --- but the attempt to get the information through is commendable. And I'm sure you understand my prefered answer to this one - but for here and now:

Level 4 is not a comfortable term to hear when used in the same sentence as "nuclear" If I lived by Omaha, I wouldn't be real complacent right now. People need to know of imminent danger whether it ever gets to be a crisis or not.

It's hard to believe the media went along with the blackout on this subject, especially some news outlets.

What on earth kept them inline???

If this were true whistle blowers would line the streets to blow the cap off of it. Whoever does will instantly have half the country on their side. Look at the fervor that was pitched over an unreleased birth certificate. There is no way something like this could be kept down for so long.

Next we will be getting our news releases from the Pravda and the National Inquirer. I'm sure we could pour through those publications and start a new thread for each article posted on them.

I'm not so sure about that. There are a lot of things we never hear about that could have very negative effects on us. Do you honestly believe you've heard everything about the Gulf spill now? That is an incident that was known worldwide, yet there are some facts about it that have not been allowed to be released.

Not sure about those sources - but there have been a lot of close calls that never got reported.

The biggest problem I have with conspiracy theories is that it assumes humans are cattle and that the conspiracy theorist alone is above the bovinal status.

Plus it caters to spawning and cultivating alarmist attitudes.

Life is meant to be enjoyed as a gift. Running around blaming lies on everyone one meets is counterproductive to that in my opinion.

But then again that may just be me being me.

That's kewl. My biggest peeve is slip programming that makes people open their mouths and yell "conspiracy theory" just because someone hits a keyword they are programmed to rail against.

My second biggest peeve is people's slip programming is so damned solid that they continue to yell "conspiracy theory" "tinfoil" way after the whole thing was proven that, yes some extremely rich powerful people had a plan.

The third runner up is people who think because others see patterns in events somehow have a less rewarding, interesting, or entertaining life than anyone else.

But - that might just be me being me, too.

Well, when I click the first link at Fark for the topic, it goes to the newstory I quoted at the top of this thread.

It is still kind of strange that the article was in Google News - I would really think Google would know if it was a farce and not print it.

No - no reason you shouldn't believe what you read...and that's what those folks count on. There are a LOT of sites (mostly blogs) claiming this same "blackout".

What I had a problem with initially was that we would have this news from Russian sources by way of Pakistan - I couldn't buy that.

Let's face it - on both sides of this issue the biggie is the fear that lingers over the Japanese nuclear problems. That has provided a vehicle for the pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear sides and they are riding it to death. Add in bloggers looking for any way to ride a trend for traffic...and there you go. I'm sure many people fully believed this "blackout info" and probably will continue to think it's a fact. It's possible the truth is in between if official "agencies" have been told not to comment on this issue.

Funniest thing I found was the one young blogger who has managed to get a top search spot for BOTH sides of the issue. Now that's a marketer dude!

This particular issue is really very easy to clear up, too. All it will take is someone that lives in the area that owns a Geiger counter to walk around for awhile looking for radiation. A lot of rockhounds own one and they can be rented as well. So if people in that area are freakin' over whether they are being irradiated or not -- all they have to do is walk around and find out.

That is why I think this may be a hoax. I'm not hearing a word about anyone just checking out the landscape. Doesn't make sense to me. If someone told me I was being slowly nuked, I'd sure wanna find out for sure and avoid going where the radiation is.

While the article Kay posted that quoted actual people from Nebraska and the plant manager made me feel like this was the truth, having worked for an oil refinery I know they have people to 'spin' incidents like this to the media (naturally to avoid mass hysteria).

On the one hand I believe it and on the other I always wonder.

Another example is we definitely had a dangerous incident one day in the inspection laboratory where they test the oil and etc. by burning it at different temps, etc. The chemists and inspectors all have 'hoods' over their stations that get the smoke out, as well as a ventilation system for the whole lab that supposedly gets rid of anything else in the air.

They needed to clean the air ducts and since it was a 24 hour shop, they didn't bother to have anyone leave when they had workers sandblast all the air ducts.

A heavy rain of particles, vapors, etc came down on everyone - leaving a powdery residue on everything.

24 hours after the fact they had the industrial hygenists in there doing tests on the air - (ok lots of stuff settles after 24 hours, eh?) The air was perfect! These were the results published and official. No arguments. Indefensible.

One chemist had seizures that were so serious she was permanently disabled - but after years in court it was deemed that she had some pre-disposition that must have caused it. (the difference between 'disability' and 'workers compensation' which is almost impossible to get)... and not to mention the difference between a lawyer she could afford and the ones the oil company had...

    sorry off topic sorta.

That's human nature, Pat. It's the same thinking that sells WSOs and make money products to the same people day after day. "I know this is probably not true but what if it is".

It's the same thing that makes us pause to wonder "what if" it's true - "what if" we're being lied to, etc. Our logic tells us "this is not right" but there's this little bit of fear or excitement saying "but what if that's true".

One thing is always true. After any kind of big storm or natural disaster, there will be predictions of "another one" for months in spite of any evidence to the contrary. Any news event on the same topic will be sensationalized. Happens every time.

When the new stories fail to provide the "ah-ha" factor, the clamor eventually begins to die off. The subject disappears from view - until the next disaster catches us "by surprise".

I think it's smart not to trust one side or the other when it comes to something like this - the truth is usually somewhere in between.

        Speaking of power plants.
They just had a story on the news that the employes of the Yankee Nuclear power plant are suing the state because the state wants to shut it down next year. They say they will deprived of their civil liberties if the plant is closed.
7 Vt Yankee nuke workers sue state over job threat
The thing is this plant went online in 1961 and was only supposed to be used for around 6 years. It was the third nuclear power plant built in the nation.
        Yankee Nuclear Power Plant

I've been there a few times at the lake and it was pretty neat, but I don't really feel that comfortable with a 50 year old 'temporary' nuclear power plant operating just 49 miles from my house.

Yep as long as they can keep their jobs it seems they think it's ok.

More proof that jobs are hard to come by.

It's a mindset we have that's too common. We build quality plants and buildings, roads and bridges - but totally fail to upgrade and maintain them. We know what "life expectancy" is but ignore the necessity to build a replacement by the time the "life" runs out.

I think the point of the news on the nuclear plants mentioned here is not "near disaster" - it's "crisis managed".

      That's a good thing.:p
