How many bones have you broken?

Your own, that is, not those of someone else.

Growing up, I think I only saw one kid with a broken bone which led me to believe that it was a rare occurrence, like when you have a terrible accident. As an adult, I started seeing more broken bones and thought, "yes, but they probably fell off a ladder or something." You know where I'm headed, don't you? "It won't happen to me." Yeah, right.

Why did this suddenly come to my mind?

Because I think I just broken a bone in my pinky toe, tripping over the freakin' dog's chair on my way to the kitchen. The toe was black and blue yesterday and I could barely walk. It's subsided now, not as swollen and now just purple and blue but still a bit sore.

Then, I started to think, "How many times have I stubbed my toe?"

I think I broke 3 toes on different occasions because I no longer can wear shoes with heels of any height without pain. Now, I have the pinky on my left toe injured.

If I were to count, that would be:
2 bones in my left arm (both at the same time),
my second last toe on my right foot (at least 3 times)
my pinky toe on my right foot (lost count)
my pinky toe on my left foot (once)
and maybe my middle toe on my right foot (1-2 times)

So I'm guessing at least 5 broken bones, possibly 7.

How many broken bones have you experienced?

Like you I've broken toes several times. Not much you can do for those. I broke my nose once jumping off of a trampoline. I landed in a crouch, and my knee went into my nose. Not fun. Broke my arm jumping off of a swingset. And I received a hairline fracture in my neck diving into a pool.

Not too bad. At least not compared to all of the dumb stuff I've attempted over the years.

Are you two accident prone, by any chance? Or do you partake in dangerous activities? Bravo75, you certain sound like you do.

Heels - I think I came close to seriously injuring mine a few times by using them as hammers. {duh} Fortunately, it caused only short term pain.

I broke my 2 wrist bones by being stupid, trying to walk on sheer ice over concrete in my slippers. There's obviously a reason they call them slippers. Stupid product. Why would anyone want footwear that slips unless you're a fancy dancer?

Other than that, the toes are a result of not wearing footwear around the house, because they've all been from stubbing them on things like bed supports and various corners around the house.

You're right, garyv, doctors can't help broken toes. You just have to wait them out. Ice would reduce the swelling, but that's about it.

I thought I broke my butt once when I slid off the edge of the top step to the basement, landed on my left cheek, hitting the edge of the step. It still hurts occasionally, and that was a few years back - again because of those damned slippers.

When I was a kid I often slid off the edge of the step and slid downstairs on my butt when I wore slippers, yet my mother always scolded me for NOT wearing them. Hey, mom. There was a reason.

I've never broken any bones that I know of, although like you I did stub my big toe badly into the wall about 12 years ago. The joint is swollen and hurts occasionally, so I figure I might have done some damage to the joint and maybe it's a bit arthritic. Tempted to x-ray it while I'm working at the vet clinic but never get around to it....

I broke both bones in my arm once - slipped on my friend's wet redwood deck. Not once, but twice - yup- got up and fell down again. I didn't exactly have on 'slippers' but they were those cloth maryjanes from the Peoples Republic of China - no traction - I must have had 20 pairs in my lifetime (they are cheap and feminine) but no more after that deal with my arm.

I didn't realize what happens when you break a toe - no idea there is nothing that can be done. I have had foot surgery a few times because my baby toes were 'hammer toes' - they did something to them to make them straight, removed the nails in them so they don't cause 'spurs' to form, and then the last time they cut all the nerves on the side of one foot so I wouldn't feel any pain.

I slammed one of my toes into a door way and it must have been the other foot because it hurt like hell, turned black and I was worried for a week until it started to fade.

High heels are one of the most sadistic inventions there has ever been - I used to wear them everyday and I am sure they are responsible for most of my foot trouble. That and narrow shoes with the pointy toes - I am sure the Marquis de Sade had something to do with them.

If the damage is a problem, I'm sure they could do something, but generally they don't bother with broken toes.

I knew a woman once who had all of her toenails removed. It sounded so painful and was really weird to see her toes without them. Can't remember why she had it done.

I never used to have hammer toes, but after banging up the 4 end ones (2 on each foot) more than once, I now do - some worse than others.

Actually, high heels were not uncomfortable for me, even when I wore the 2-1/2" ones. But I know my toes were really close together when I wore them. Now I have gaping spaces between my toes because I'm usually in bare feet - consequently, lots of broken or otherwise injured toes.

I remember as a teen preparing to kneel down behind my boyfriend on our front verandah. A humongous splinter shunted its way under the toenail of my big toe. Wow. Was THAT ever painful. I've had a gap there between my toe and the skin ever since.

      You'd think I'd learn.

Lower leg. RIGHT, as I recall. It was do to a car accident. I was about 8, and a friend died while driving me home in his VW beetle. He had a heart attack, and the VW was totalled. It shoved the cars streering wheel into his chest.

Oh, that reminds me. I "might" have caused a small fracture in my lower right leg back in the 70s. I was making my way home across the fields (taking the road would have been about 1/2 mile compared to a few hundred yards). I reached a corner of a cow fence, just before reaching the road. I figured, I'd have to climb over, so I did. My mistake was to jump down the other side. My foot hit a hole or uneven ground and I felt an excruciating pain on the right side of my leg.

I stood there in agony for quite a few minutes before I could even straighten my leg. When I finally did, I limped through someone's yard to the street and proceeded to walk the rest of the way home - about a mile or more.

Today, I still feel a slight twinge in that spot every now and then. Never did have it checked out.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It sounds horrific.

Just one. And it wasn't so much a broken bone as it was a chipped bone. It happened when I was trying to put a difficult at into a cat carrier while I was kneeling on tile. He wiggled out of my hands and when I went to grab him I slammed my hand down the tile, hyperextending my finger, and chipping off a piece of bone. It didn't hurt near as bad as you'd imagine.

Oh, that sounds a lot like what happened to my left hand when I broke the two bones (wrist, actually). When I slipped, I was in the process of throwing the toy for my dog which threw me off balance on the ice. As I came down, my arm was coming from up over my head. I slammed the pinky side of my hand and the heel of my hand onto concrete. My pinky finger is now pulled down into the palm of my hand.

The doc says it's caused by 2 things: 1) thyroid and 2) drinking alcohol. Since I have/had both, he blames it on that, despite my insistence that it's right where I hit the concrete and that the pain ran down that side of my hand for quite a few months afterwards. I'm sure I must have done something to the pinky bone where it connects inside the hand, but what can you do when your doc tends to disagree? Regardless, he says surgery is all that will fix it, and I'm not looking forward to that. It does make typing a bit of an issue, though. I make far more typos and grammatical errors since it got so bad.

hahaha that's true. I didn't realize how many I'd broken either until I started this thread. Last night, I discovered a severely bent toe on my right foot and recalled how much it hurt when I broke that one. It's so much bigger now than it used to be.

Yes, I've done that too. Funny though, how it developed. I practically forgot how it happened until much later.

I'd been walking across the lawn and my ankle went over on some uneven ground. At the time, I felt a jolt of pain in my ankle, but it soon went away. That was around 5 p.m. The next morning as I lay in bed, I felt sharp pain in my right ankle. I thought it was just kinked from sleeping. I stepped onto the floor and although it hurt, I made it to the bathroom relatively easily.

When I came out 3 minutes later, I couldn't make it back to the bedroom. Immediately, my foot swelled like a balloon and the pain was incredible. I was on crutches for a week or so.

They say that if you sprain an ankle once, you can do it again easily. Later when I went over on the same ankle and felt that pain, I thought, Oh no. Here we go again. But it didn't develop into anything.

What I also didn't know is that if you don't take care of a sprain, you can end up with a broken ankle. That's what my doc told me at the time. I wonder how that works.

Oh yeah when you walk on uneven ground that is when it is likely to happen. The first time I sprained my ankle was when I was 18 when I was walking to school. The sidewalk was uneven and then that is when it happened. I ended up turning back home in such pain I was crying and my ankle swelled up big time. It was awful. And the most recent time I did it was 3 years ago when I was walking home from the grocery store and again, did it on the uneven sidewalk. I somehow made it back home and then my husband took me to the doctor, and he immediately got me to the x-ray lab. I had no idea that you could end up with a broken ankle if you don't take care of a sprain but luckily I did! But yeah if you do it once, then you are prone to it happening again. Not a fun experience.

I am so sorry you were injured but thank goodness you are ok!! Don't worry my 9 year old daughter already understands the dangers of it so by the time she is old enough to drive, and to drink (SEPERATELY) she will definitely know better than to do that and to not allow someone else do it! Hopefully more parents are educating their kids about it too.

I think the attitude towards drinking and driving has changed alot since when I was young, it is really perceived as anti-social behaviour that nobody supports these days. Similar thing with smoking, when I was a teenager it was the rebellious thing to do, my teenage daughters and their friends think smoking is disgusting and only fools do it

I have a broken left foot right now, broke it jumping off a 5 ft. rock trying to jump into the bed of my truck, I missed the bed and landed on the ground.

I know that was dumb, but I guess at the time I was not thinking. Can't blame it on alcohol since i don't drink or smoke, but I guess that does not stop us sometimes from doing stupid things.

Now I am laid up on clutches, guess this will give me more free time to concentrate on my business.

That is good because my daughter thinks the idea is nasty too But she is only 9, lets see how she feels when she is 15 and wants to experiment. I am not looking forward to those times. She is a good kid and it is not her that I worry about. It is those who she could potentially hang out with because she can be easily influenced.

I'm sorry to hear that. Accidents can be so devastating. Kids (and some grownups) are oblivious to what can happen. As a reporter, I've covered many accidents on the highway. Seeing the mangled bodies soon made me wake up. Do you think trotting these idiots through a morgue would do any good?

As far as my injuries go, I've been fortunate not to develop arthritis because of them - thank goodness.

Hang in there. I didn't have my first break until I was around 30, and I'm not sure it was a break. That's when I did my right leg (discussed above) crossing fields as a shortcut home. The break I DO know about was around 32 - one of my toes.

But since toes are such vulnerable things, you could have a broken toe if you've ever stubbed one, and not even know it. I didn't know my toe was broken until I showed this odd-shaped toe to the doc. He said, "Yes, you probably broke it at some point."
