Should Math Be Taught In Schools?

After watching that video all I can say is I don't think I have been this scared in a long time.

Math was my worst subject. Probably because some was stuff I knew I would never use, and some was boring. I don't really consider myself to be good, but I can BLOW AWAY a lot of people I have known, in math. THAT is scary! I mean on "are you smarter than a 5th grader", a 10 year old said, to a college GRADUATE majoring in math that said he was good in math, "And YOU are GOOD in math!?!?!?!?" with a sound of disbelief. Seriously, he was BAD!

OK, women that don't have an IQ of 100+ should be DISQUALIFIED from beauty competitions! They further a stereotype, hurt one of the purposes of the contest, and make the country look bad!

"knowledged? GET LEARNED? Alchemy? scientology? colors? vibrations? smells? mixed drinks? theory? 4*4 is NOT 16? math is a THEORY?" COME ON!!!!!!!! OK, almost ALL of those contestants think nothing should be taught past KINDERGARTEN! BTW for those that don't know, the average age, of kindergartners in the US, has been 5 YEARS old!

Do I think math should be taught? When I was in the 1st/2nd grade, I wanted MORE math, like ALGEBRA! When I was in the 3rd grade, I got a HORRIBLE teacher, Miss Luce, that actually APOLOGIZED to my mother for being such a HORRIBLE math teacher. I was apparently in the FIRST class she ever "taught". OH though, she LOVED "teaching" singing! Seriously, things are REALLY skewed! I still remember a lot about that jerk.

BTW I was in the early grades in the 60s. Calculators were effectively NOT existent! When they finally appeared in the 70s, schools didn't allow them. TODAY, calculators can be built into watches and hidden! NEVER MIND THOUGH! They will often even let you bring in something that LOOKS like a calculator but is effectively a COMPUTER!

And watch all the minimum wage people suddenly look like DEER in the headlights when the power goes out!

BTW I LOVE miss vermont's retort. ALL the others should have been DISQUALIFIED! But I guess SHE didn't win, huh? 8-( Seriously, "math is a theory"!?!?!? YEAH RIGHT!

Anyone else think this is just a spoof and not real? Especially considering that Miss Alabama USA 2011 is much prettier than the "Miss Alabama" above?

It certainly looks like you are right about it being fake. As for how pretty they are, they were dressed down, and there is no accounting for taste.

Holy cow - that was scary. It was a great spoof on evolution, though. I'm thinking they might have gotten the point across pretty well on that one. I have to be honest and say my whole reaction was "WTF".

I figured it was a spoof when Miss Vermont came on,was dressed down and sort of a plain Jane,and said something like "What,are you kidding,is this a serious question?" or something along those lines.

Math is a vital skill to have. Without it you end up just being perplexed at where all your stuff is going.
