Today is not a good day!

I closed my eyes with a coffee in my hand and my la*to* on my knee.

Coffee went all over machine and now I can't write the letter after 'O'.

For the moment I have lost THREE re*orts that I have nearly finished but am ho*ing that the techs can recover them for me.

I have no sound so can't listen to video's.

Anyone know if this is the end of my machine? If so, will the techs be able to recover my stuff?

It's really hard to write without the letter after 'O'...

*lease change the '*' for the letter after 'O'

Sorry for the challenge in reading this.

Karen

NO laughing...

  • I'm sorry... must be frustrating. Try to dry out the laptop and if need be take it to someone that can take off the key and see if it is repairable. A faster option is to simply connect an external keyboard.

    • I have done this a number of times. It usually ruins the keyboard; the contacts corrode. I think the last time I dumped tea on my Dell laptop it was $175-$200 to repair.

You should turn off your laptop.

    • It might be good to keep it off. I once spilled a lot of water accidentally in my laptop and immediately shut it off. I turned it upside down and shook out water. Just left alone and would periodically shake out water and use towel to wipe down keys and it did come back except also for a letter. I had to copy and paste that letter into notepad everytime I needed it to be able to use it in documents. I hope it revives but keep power off and take out battery, dry it and compartment out etc.

  • Cheer up, Karen, the letter 'P' is very overrated. How often is Sesame Street brought to you by the letter 'P'? Not very often... if ever!

    • This really is the funniest reply I have ever had to a question

      Made my day.

p.s Still copying and pasting the 'p'
  • I'm sorry to hear, I also did that to my laptop 5 years ago. Luckily I haven't in IM so I didn't suffer much from it.

No wonder you use * to replace p .. lol
  • That is bad. Don't get frustrated, everything will be fine.

  • :p Use On Screen Keyboard/ Virtual Keyboard it comes in windows under Program Files-->accessories-->accessiblity. I don't know about other Os.. It might help you temp
  • Thanks everyone - this is the thing dried out. So it's off to the techs tomorrow.

I hope ('p' - pasted in...lol, never thought of that...) you all have a good day!

    • Karen,
If you're using Vista or Windows 7 (or if you have DNS or some other speech recognition software), hook up your mic and attempt to salvage what you can through the voice command prompts.

Alternatively... grab any digital recorder, or if you have Google Voice call it and record yourself 'talking' out what you've already written, so that you can just transcribe later if that becomes necessary.

      Good luck.

  • Hopefully this is just awkward coincidence and not some bad karma coming out to get you!
  • Dang...it's a good thing I wasn't drinking coffee when I read this...or I would have snorted it all over my screen and keyboard!

Karen, sorry to hear about your loss of the letter "p".

My sister recently lost her letter "z" in a very similar accident.

Fortunately for her, "z" can be lived without much easier.

Here is another temp solution tip that may help...

In Windows, click on the Start icon and type the word "keyboard" (no "p" needed) into the search box.

You will see a result pop up for "On Screen Keyboard"

That program will allow you to use your mouse with the virtual keyboard to get the letter "p" typed.

Also, another solution is to setup a hotkey for the letter "p", using some other keystroke command.

Temporary fixes at best...but it may help in the short term.

  • With previous computers, this certainly has happened to me and some friends.

This is an unfortunate event for sure, but it does happen. I even put a note at my
desk saying, "No DRINKS allowed". Yeah, A bit over kill, I know.
  • Sorry to hear what had happen to you today. But cheer up Ms Karen, whatever we had in our life, are all lessons for us to improve and be a better person. A mistake will not just happen and we never learn from it, we learn from our mistakes and from that lesson that we had, we tend to develop and improve ourselves for the next time around.
It's a learning process for everyone and every mistakes, has their own lessons to learn from it. Keep a positive outlook in life, and always moves forward.

    • Sorry, Karen, to hear about the accident.

Hey, you will not be able to key in the name of the newborn
      David Beckam's daughter: !!!!!
  • Why not get a USB keyboard and plug it in?

I hate typing on laptops and have always used a full sized keyboard.
  • I wonder if you'd have got more interest in the thread if the title had been;

    "I need a p on my laptop"

    • That was bad but still try to get it fine.
  • Yeah just plug in another key board (usb) and you'll be away laughing. It does sound like the computer has had any other ill effects so I'd be laughing not crying. You could have fried the whole thing. My daughter got water into her computer. Storm damage to an overhead skylight, water came in, dripped down on to the computer, found it's way inside the computer and end of the harddisk. Wouldn't boot up, nothing. Amazing though, the tech guys were able to retrieve all her data and insurance paid for a newer better computer. So your troubles could be a blessing in disguise.
  • I had the "a" button pop off mine once... not an easy letter to live without. I ended up copying it and making sure not to copy anything else and got used to pressing ctrl+v instead of "a".
  • This is what you need:

  • Well morning of 7/3/11 is really not a good one for you, you will remember this surely for a very long time. Coffee on laptop, This is the first day in history when laptop demand a coffee..lol
Don't worry about your laptop it will be ok, i hope it has ok now. Take it to proper mechanic which really understand this work then surely your laptop will be back.
  • the letter after 'O'. After reading this, I feel obligated to write a short story titled "The Letter After 'O'--one of the most important letters in the alphabet"
  • I sneezed with a drink in my mouth one time and killed my laptop.

A few hundred dollars later it was fixed, but every time I turned it on I'd have to reset the time...

So it can prob. get fixed, may take some $$$ though :-(
