I've tried selling sand art. Didn't go so well.

Thought it would be an awesome idea.

Bought a bunch of colored sand.

    Started making stuff.

    Realized that...
    a) Sand art does not ship well.

    b) Who buys sand art anyway?
And, thus, my dreams of being the first millionaire sand artist died.

    Anyone need some sand?

Selling hamsters and gerbils online didn't work out well either.

        Apparently, they chew through cardboard.

The post office begged me to stop.

Well, I had been studying for a long time about Internet Marketing. I had bought a couple of courses and tried what they said but I found very little success in selling these "widgets". Everybody talked about how well they would sell if I just followed their examples but I made exactly $0 from all my hard work of trying to sell widgets.

I felt abused, hurt and dismayed from my months of hard work with no results. So I contacted the vendors that sold me these courses and asked for a refund. They told me that I should box up my computer and ship it to them. I figured that it must be a problem with my computer also so I kindly obliged.

Now, here I sit typing this out on a Commodore 64. Thank God I still have my AOL dialup though!

I'm ready to learn anew... Hey! What's that? Maybe I'll click on the links in your sig and find out how to make money on the interwebs!

I've had that happen to me too. I figured it was another scam, so I ignored them. After another round of refund requests, they started offering me money for my computer. Big money.

After that, I splurged on a big screen TV. 27"! So, here I am, typing this out on my WebTV.

JD. You have got to remember that people who have failed, think the rest of us are faking success.

After all, if they cannot succeed with an online business, it is highly doubtful that others could ever succeed with an online business.

So they only count those whom they know cannot be faking it.

It stands to reason that the reason I have not had a job in six years must be that I am making my wife support me.

Yeah, that eHarmony banning still is a bit of a black mark on my record...

            But back on topic!

Maybe if we froze the hamsters and gerbil and put them in a state of cryogenic suspension? Maybe that would solve the whole problem of them chewing out of the boxes? Want to do a JV?

I realize the term 'failure' is very subjective, but are you saying you've never failed at anything you've done online?

And I'm not trying to be clever here. I just assumed that even the most successful Internet Marketers would have failed at something, at some stage in their online endeavors.

I should have phrased it as, "are failing".

Not to be cute or clever, I have never said that I have never failed.

In fact the truth would be I fail all the time, but I get up off my ass and keep climbing...

So many folks in this forum are happy to fall down, then whine about their failure, never learning the important lessons that come with failure.

Following this line, most new Internet Marketers have delusions of adequacy in the skill department.

How many newbies complain that their content is 'high quality' only to show examples riddled with spelling and grammar errors? How many do things 'because so-and-so does it and he makes a lot more money than me' without pausing to understand why so-and-so did whatever it was? I could go on, but the point isn't to bash new folks.

And how many will turn around and blame some gooroo for their lack of skill or insight?

All the above is true and it is more than just trying to put a positive spin on what many might perceive as failure by saying "I learned what didn't work"... but at least by TRYING you win. Sitting for weeks on end not doing anything other than reading about the "how" of how to make money online is an epic fail. By simply doing something, even if it's complete crap you put things in motion that will lead to success.

Ok... enough serious stuff for me for today... OH! And Bill... nobody ever accused you of being either "cute of clever"... BURN!

To me failure isn't subjective - something worked (satisfied all of the test criteria) or it didn't (satisfied some, but not all or none of the test criteria). Just ask any researcher/scientist about failure - it's expected, looked for and then used to reach a successful conclusion.

The difference with Internet Marketers, especially newer ones, is that they allow their egos/emotions to get in the way of looking at their results objectively. This results in what I consider to be the only true failure, which is to stop trying.

Not being clever either, but my wife likes to tell people I don't know how to fail. She's right - the ideas don't fail, but the process in getting them to work may involve a lot of failed experiments. None of that is ever wasted effort though - it's part of a process.

So my answer is that no, I've never failed at any one particular thing I've tried to do online. I've never "Not" made money in anything I've tried to do.
            Excellent post.

Edison "failed" to make a working light bulb on all but his 1000th or so attempt.

When I said the term was subjective, I meant that it can mean different things to different people. As you've pointed out... some people personalize failure and make more meaning out of it than is useful to them. For example "I failed to make a sale with my last website", as opposed to "The strategy I used to make a sale on my last website failed".

The reason I like the premise of this thread so much is that I think many of us beginners have this misconception that everyone in here who makes a decent living did so by having some superior gift at IM from the outset. When in truth it probably undersells what many of the 'gurus' (I hate that term) went through to get where they are.

I'll try and add to the multitude of valuable and insightful responses in here already ....

My first attempt at IM was as a clickbank affiliate using PPC.

I had my adwords account banned within 2 days.

My problem was taking bad advice from a 'guru'. Although I can't lay all the blame on someone else, in fact, I shoulder 100% of the blame...

I should have checked that everything I was being taught and was implementing was not against google's TOS. I didn't and I was punished for it.

It was a good learning experience though and probably worked out for the better as the path I'm travelling now is teaching me a lot more than I would have learned from those methods.

I'm sure even the guys on here bringing in the big dollars would have made at least a few mistakes and stuff ups along the way.

It would be nice of them to share their stories too.

Don't I know it. With the economy such that it is, people are settling for plain old round cookies instead of buying cookie cutters to make them in different shapes.

I feel sorry for this generation of kids that may never see fun shaped homemade cookies.

I tried an Alzheimer's site, but no one could remember the link.
Should have done it before you got it, silly.

I'm considering a site selling books to Alzheimers patients - it's a series of "special editions". Well, actually, it's the same book with different covers, but who's gonna know?

Back in the early days of the Internet, I started a bull**** delivery business.

I was young and naive and forgot to trademark my product.

Soon the bull**** was pirated and uploaded to torrent sites all over the place.

I decided there was no money in bull**** after all and quit the business.

Obviously, I quit too soon because now there's bull**** all over the web.

I tried it for a few hours, but then I got a nasty eMail from Jeff Bezos demanding his domain name back.

He threatened to cancel my Amazon Prime account, so I gave him his domain back right away.

Someone once advised me to start a porn website--said that was where the big money was online.

He suggested that I find a bunch of foxes, photograph them in the nude, and charge a monthly subscription fee to the site.

It didn't work out well at all. Apparently, dogs don't have credit cards.

Tina - You quit too soon. Should have taken your biz offline. My #2 son had a "virtual BS business" and made money with it.

Originally, he sold little paper bags of ginkgo berries to kids for Halloween - $1 a bag and he sold out every time. Then he branched out to gag gift ginkgo bags to local college fraternities.

Ginkgo berries smell just like very strong, fresh dog poop - and so does your shoe if you step on them. Eventually, I made him close his business due to the fragrance of his storage facility (my garage).

You have to learn to target your audience with your sig links. Internet marketers, for example, aren't interested in cufflinks. They don't wear suits. They just sit around in their underwear and make more money before 9:00 a.m. than most people make all day.

My first failed online venture was an eBook on How To Read Music.
    Do I hear you laughing?
The flaws in this idea are painfully obvious aren't they?
In my newbie excitement, I was blissfully blind.
Since then I've been carefully crafting a system to choose profitable niches.
    • Is learning to read music an urgent problem (for most people) on par with say, curing their hemorrhoids or marrying the girl of their dreams? Did I hear you say NO?
    • Are people willing to pay $27 for a pdf book from a suspicious website on how to read music when they could buy a copy of masterpiece on the subject on Amazon for a few dollars or buy fun training software for the same price? Hell No.
    • Do people (besides nerds like me) get pumped up thinking about learning to read music? Do they lie in bed at night and fantasize about their future proficiency? Nope.
    • Are there other profitable products on reading music on Clickbank and Google Adwords? Practically none.
    • Are there active forums and blogs dedicated to learning to read music? Very few.
I was doomed from the start.
And these are just some of the flaws in the market itself. I didn't mention the weak website and the crappy copy because it's irrelevant. I lost before I started because I was barking up the wrong tree. If I considered even one of the marketing questions above before I dove in, I could have saved myself two months of drudgery banging out that book.
But I'm thankful for the experience. I invested just a couple hundred dollars and the education I received in return was priceless...that's a nice ROI. That's more than I could expect from a single course at my school which costs over 3K.

Dare I suggest that if you fail to rank in the search engines that there are other ways to get traffic for your websites?

You should never fail, simply because you could not rank in Google.

While Google is big, it is not the only source of traffic online.
