Could be right this time. It seems like every time they find underwater ruins they think they have found Atlantis. One of these times they'll be right, eh? What I've been wondering if maybe Atlantis wasn't a full continent or at least country sized piece of land with many settlements. That might even tie some of these finds together. There is an ocean that may just have been, and probably was created first as a rift valley then later dropped below sea level and was flooded - same thing as is creating the red sea.

Of all the other "discoveries", this is the one that really gets my attention. The stuff I posted above doesn't quite get all the details as the full Nat Geo show gave...

They even tested for methane that would show oranic matter and it came up positive. Virtually every test they've done backs up the theory that this site is really Atlantis.

One problem is, this site is a marsh that's under water most of the year, so they only have a short time to examine it.

ANY of the underwater sites in the region could have INSPIRED the Atlantis legend.

    Nothing weird about that.

The only question is which one was the real inspiration? And that will remain unknown unless new DOCUMENTS shed light on it.

Either way, it is an interesting find.

    All the best,

    Who knows...

    Only time will tell.

We still have not found one piece of hard evidence that the place ever existed but why would Plato write about it as if it was a real place - if it wasn't?

It may also just be an very, very old city instead of an entire continent etc.

That's kind of like the ancient version of "if it's on TV it must be true".

Why would any writer of fiction or myths write about places that aren't real?

Maybe Plato heard about Atlantis from a trusted source.

          Or maybe he didn't.

Even if he did, it was something he even said had happened well before his lifetime.

But to say it's true just because an author wrote it as if it were true is silly.

Plato got it from Homer. And we know how Homer loved to tell some really tall tales back in his day.

It would be a very interesting discovery IF it's proven true. Speculation is fun, at least.

I don't think Plato was the only writer who referenced Atlantis. There are other writers who have talked about civilizations that "used to be" about the same way we talk about ancient Greeks. And we now know that civilization at least as advanced as we know of since about 6,000 BC has been around over 11,000 years. When people mention stuff in writing casually as old civilizations were, there must have been some sort of consensus that they were there. We keep pushing the time table back on what we know every year.

Anyhow - whether it turns out to be THE Atlantis or not - this is a very interesting discovery, Kurt. Thanks for sharing it. I hope to hear more about what they find out.
