Phoenix Rising

Just got back from Phoenix (Arizona)...for non US Warrior alumni)

103 degrees...was still 102 at 6pm last night and the projected forecast was for 111 by Monday. How do you guy's over there live like that?...

When I was just older than my youngest, I did live there for 8 months in a motel with my family on the way to California.

But man the humidity now is off the hook. Cloud cover was keeping the heat in even after dark.

I'm not in the least disparaging the people of Phoenix or Arizona in general, just don't see the attraction for that kind of heat.

I've had bad back problems lately, but I had to arise and in an extreme case of irony...go to Phoenix...lol.

One interesting thing was that I hit one Border patrol checkpoint going in. then a produce? ( I know that's not the right word )...agriculture checkpoint coming back and two more Border patrol checkpoints inside Cali..

Reminded me of traveling in foreign countries, which I have done quite a bit.

The heat was just extreme and IMO getting worse with humidity.
Any of you people living there a long time think the weather has changed in the last 20/30 years?

  • Its probably been 40 years since I was there but I seem to remember very little humidity, though it was very hot during the day, and when the sun went down you could freeze your behind off if you slept outside in a sleeping bag, which is what we did.

    • Never been there and being the winter loving kinda guy I am, I probably never will
Jim have you looked into inversion tables for your back?

    • Ya know Kim, there was a guy many years ago I remember predicting that the Southwest would slowly turn tropical.

Of course 'everyone' laughed, but I still remember (although I can't remember his name).

Just from growing up in LA ( for teenage years anyway) and now living in San Diego, there is far more humidity in the summer than I remember from 'back then'.

It is changing consistently IMO, slowly every year.

The humidity wasn't anything like the Philippines or even back east, but still noticeable if your paying attention.

I couldn't believe how hot it stayed up until midnight even. And your right, true desert weather, you fry in the day and 'freeze' at night.

  • People used to move to the desert SW to get away from humidity and allergies...So they built swimming pools and planted flowers to the point where cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix have as much pollen as anywhere and the pools are increasing the humidity.

  • After experiencing the extreme heat of Saudi Arabia, I never really enjoyed being in the sun again.

    • yea Tbird that's pretty extreme stuff over there.
I spent some time in the Middle East.

I don't know which was more uncomfortable that extreme dry heat or the extreme humidity at certain times of the year in the Philippines and other tropic places in the Far East and south China Sea.

I'll tell you one thing, it will be a while before I complain about a little heat in San Diego though...:p
