    Semuel,

I think the quality of Avast, AVG, Avira and a few others are very good. I usually look at CNET's Download.com and pick from there.

As you may know, download.com has a pretty good reputation on the 'Net.

I mostly prefer to Kespersky because its best for the treatment of latest threats and infections. But from these two i will suggest you AVG which is best and their Free edition is giving good protection to PC's.

I used AVG for several years and it was OK.

I recently switched to Avast and think it's better.

AVG works fine, but I find it slows down the computer pretty much when it scans for viruses so you need to be careful setting a daily scan time when you won't be using the computer.

I have heard good things about the anti virus system from Microsoft, too. I believe it's called Microsoft Security Essentials and is a free download.

Neither, they detect quite a few false positives (particularly AVG).
Kaspersky is the way to go for ultimate protection, and relatively less resource usage than Norton.

    Hi Semual

I'm using Avast Internet Security at the moment and the license
expires in 6 days. It has worked well for me over the past year on
a laptop running Vista and an old Dell desktop running XP PRO.

I have not had any problems at all, it updates regularly and uses
very little resource. I have not used AVG but came to Avast
after Kaspersky started gobbling up my resources half way through
    the licence period.

Now looking for something to replace AVAST because the new
license for 1 unit is so expensive. I've also heard good things about
Microsoft Security Essentials and I'm told it's free.

    Hope this helps.

Avast does try to get you to pay for it at the end of the year, but you don't have to. Just hold out. I forget how exactly it happened, but you get a chance to renew the free version.

MSE is quite good, and it is free. I like Avast better because of the 'boot time scan' option. It saved one of my computers, and I used it to sort out a computer for someone else.

Both are better than AVG imo.

Further info on AVAST...Which I have been very happy with.

Just before my Avast license expired I was reminded to renew and
offered a £10 discount to renew making the new deal £39 for only
1 license. I let the license expire today. Uninstalled, restarted on
both units, download free Microsoft Essentials and the Avast Free
    Anti Virus.

When Avast Free Anti Virus finally installed I was offered a further
discount to upgrade back to the full Internet Security Package for
only £19 a year...Just as Lloyd said they would in his post.

I found this really annoying and will stick with what I've got just now.

Hope this helps other folks when it comes to renewals.

That's kind of misleading. Macs can get viruses, Trojans, backdoors, adware, spyware, and other nefarious applications, too. The Mac just isn't targeted as often because there aren't near as many.

If I used a Mac, I'd still want antivirus protection. Chris Pirillo (the guy from Lockergnome) recommends ClamXav for Macs.

Of course, if you did use a Mac there is a lot of software you wouldn't have to worry about . . . all the programs that simply aren't available for the Mac.

To the OP, I have a friend that is a computer technician, and she's used AVG for years.

Since I downloaded AdAware free and switched to Google Chrome browser I have not had any unwanted spyware, malware or viruses. My computer runs nice and fast just like it did when new! It's nice that they're both free too.

I did the same to my sister's computer about 8 months ago. Her laptop always used to get infected on a regular basis but no more problems since AdAware Free and Google Chrome.

I have also used Firefox a few times and no problems there either. I'd never go back to Internet Explorer browser again. I think that's what most of the viruses attack.

I recommend Avast, AVG is heavy and slows down your pc. Avast provides an option of Safety Sandbox which is useful while shopping online.

Can comment on Avast or AVG, but I use Comodo Internet Security Suite.

I have found it one of the best solutions out there.

And most importantly, it's FREE! :-)

As a consultant, I have repaired many of PC due to virus infection. Almost ALL of those PC's had AVG on them. I usually take off AVG and put Avast on. After that no more problems with viruses/ malware. Also, I have repaired PC's where AVG breaks the network and starts acting like a virus itself and will not install with the installer. Then I have to go into safe mode, delete all the files and registry entries and then the network starts working. I never used AVIRA but between AVG/ AVAST, AVAST is the CLEAR winner.

Why pay for antivirus when your ISP probably provides that same expensive Antivirus/ Network Threat protection for FREE?

I've tried the free versions of Avira, AVG and Avast. I preferred Avast in terms of speed and UI except it had critical problems with slowing down software that needed many different open connections so I'm using Avira now which is good except it has popups sometimes which is a big turn-off.

I also used Norton (paid) in the past which completely failed (virus destroyed operating system to an unrecoverable state). For my work I need to open hundreds of web pages a day on random sites so now I just run firefox and chrome in a sandbox (Sandboxie) which makes the AV much less important.
