I vote CB ban those stupid exit pages. Wait! Are you sure? Are you sure? Really, you want to leave?

I'm so freakin tired of having to click 10 times in order to leave a site, especially the ones on clickbank. It drives me crazy!

I can somewhat tolerate having one or MAYBE two exit popups, but even that's pushing it.

Don't you think after someone has already clicked "leave page" two, three, four, five, and in some cases up to 10 times they OBVIOUSLY don't want your stupid product? Seriously, give it up!

They should be banned by CB and everywhere else.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day. Sorry I had to say it. A site I was just at sent me over the edge.

    I think one is enough.

Any more than that, and yes it's annoying. Apparently they will improve sales, kind of like the "second effort" in telemarketing or sales after you've gotten a no. But for the majority, they will just be an annoyance.

So if you have exit pop-ups you have to weigh the con of annoying those who probably won't come to your site again against the pro of getting a few more sales.

I think the more sales wins most of the time, for those using exit pop-ups.

I agree, but just like the annoying video's that do not let you fast forward... they are probably proven to "convert" or folks would not use them.

I don't believe Clickbank is the culprit, but they are way way way overused.
I have gotten to where is someone tries to use that on me I pretty much unsubscribe from any list of theirs I am on. If I want something I'll buy it,and if I don't some cheap shot second attempt is not changing my mind.

      • There's a universal law about envying and or putting down / complaining about others who are financially successful, or trying to be, while attempting to become financially successful yourself.

I.E. you see a gorgeous sports car ($100,000+) driving down the street,
and inside of it sits a well dressed man with a beautiful girl by his side.
And in your head you are thinking.... "damn you, you rich *******,
you must be one of those scammers who rip people off to get what you got".

The same day you go home and look online on how to become rich on the internet.
You then come across a website that goes all out, and implements all of its conversion tactics (exit pages, etc) and pulls out all the stops on it's visitors.

        You now have 2 choices,

        1. Bitch about it, because you got a little stuck in a sales tactic.

        2. Say "you go guy (or girl) and applaud that website owner for not taking NO for an answer the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 10th time, and laugh about it.

Because in the end, this will make the difference between you still being either a wannabee "internet marketer" 5 years from now, asking and looking for "the secrets" because your sales are low, if any, or you being a successful marketer using all the tricks in the book as long as they are legal.

People, realize that all the things you don't like when "buying" obviously are in place, and exist because it is what helps a successful business in "selling".

Which one do you want to be??

Unfortunately testing proved that they increased conversion (at least at the time) some practitioners seem to have gone overboard with the "if one is good 10 will be 10 times better" philosophy.

They may be inadvertently increasing card abandonment rate, I routinely leave just to test for exit pop discount offers, I have seen up to 4 increasing discounts on repeated exits.

I particularly hate this practice on CPV sort of pop-ups that I didn't volunteer for.

It always amuses me how many marketers seem to assume that just because a tactic is common it must therefore be universally successful and so simply copy it without considering whether it's right for their particular market or apparently giving any thought to what longer term effects such a tactic might have on their ongoing business...and then wonder why they're not finding success.

  • I see some comments regarding how clickbank should forbid exit pages that are over used. Clickbank would loose millions in revenue if they did that . Think about it. Why" because @Webapex is right, they do increase conversion, and conversion = revenue for all, including clickbank. + I think @ncmedia summed it all up nicely as well.

I do agree with you. One exit po up can make you extra money, and that's good. We are talking here about those sites that use more than one. That gets disgusting. On the other hand, most of the times the exit pop up drives visitors to squeeze pages or optin forms, which may harm affiliate sales.

    Just my 0.02 cents.

From a marketers point of view you haz no idea how much money you lose vs save with exit pops, i.e. can't beat them - learn from them. Doesn't mean add 10, it just means test until you max it, and stop buying into mmo's try building a product yourself instead (ideally NOT another MMO ), and you'll truly see the power of exit pops from a fiscal standpoint.

    Ha, Ha!

Once I was on this CB squeeze page that asked me about 4 times If I was sure I wanted to leave.

The product started out around $97 & by the time the last popup the price dropped down to about $17.

Tells me the product must not be worth a $hit, If it drops from $97 to $17.

That's exactly the message they're conveying to potential customers, if they successively reduce the price.

They're also costing themselves a fortune, because not so many people at their first visit to a sales page: some of them will come back and pay the $97 later. But not once they've seen the $17 price-ticket, obviously.

And then people wonder what they have to do to attract serious, professional affiliates who'll actually sell a few hundred copies.

The thing is that for a lot of these products, I'm talking about IM and Forex because I have contacts there and know the people selling them:

The customers are, to put it kindly, idiots.

If you look at the demographics, just as an example, your dealing with people who have spent their entire live's being unsuccessful. The majority are over 40 years old and make less than $30K per year. Only around 1/3 have college degree's (which I won't hold against them because I dropped out myself).

The point is though that in some of these niches, the buyers of the product are not the actual customer.

That is to say, the relationship the vendor cares about is not the one he has with his buyers -because 80 to 90% of them are totally out of the market with in two or three months. They buy TONS of stuff during that time, and then flame out. He obviously needs to have his list of buyers and prospects, because.....

The relationship they care about is the one they have with each other. That is to say, the important relationship is with other JV's, with affiliates.

I always thought it was stupid too, but I had a conversation at an event with one of the top CB IM sellers, a guy who I know for a fact tests everything (and does it properly), and his results have always supported using 2 or 3 exit blocks and reductions in prices, new offers on each block.

I suspect that by now part of the problem in niches like IM and Forex is that people have simply come to expect them and won't buy if they are not offered at a discount. I don't have proof that it's true, but common sense would suggest that people have become conditioned to expect it.

I sell higher end stuff, my average buyer makes over $100K a year. I have a much different approach because I get a lot of long term value from the relationship with them. This leads to a different approach.

I wouldn't offer a discount on leaving my page. I think it devalues my product and shows the customer I don't really care about the relationship I have with them -and I do - they allow my family and I to live a nice lifestyle.

But what's true for my business is not true for everyone else's business.

While I personally don't like them, I have to take both sides of the argument
      here.

      1. You may not personally like something but if that something works for the
marketer, that's the only thing that matters as long as that thing isn't unethical
or illegal. Exit pop ups are neither.

      2. Just because somebody is using something doesn't mean that it DOES work.
Too many marketers are "monkey see, monkey do" without having a clue as
to the validity of the process itself. So those of you hopping on your high
horses criticizing marketers for bashing marketers, way too many of them are
brain dead amoebas who just do without thinking.

      Here's the bottom line:

If you're uncomfortable doing something yourself, don't do it. Nobody is
putting a gun to your head. If you see someone else doing it, don't assume
that it is or isn't working. You have no way of knowing. And if it's not illegal
or unethical, it's within their right to do it.

Hopefully they'll have enough brains to either stop doing it or at least tone
it down some if they find that they're not getting the results that they're
      looking for.

Oh, and for those of you hot shots bragging about how great multiple exit
pop ups are and knocking those of us who don't like them, just because it's
working for you doesn't mean it's going to work for them. Every niche is
      different.

I can send safelist emails to the MMO niche and make a fortune. I can't do
the same with the acne niche. I wouldn't make a dime.

You need to test, test and then test some more. Only then can you decide
if it's something worth continuing to do.
