Corrupt Italian policemen

My brother-in-law has been touring Italy on his classic motorcycle, he got stopped today by the police in Naples. He was told they wanted to search him for drugs, they took his passport and wallet from him, then after a short period of time after one of them made a token search of his machine and baggage, the other returned and gave back his wallet with passport.
they drove off. when he checked the contents of his wallet it was 300 Euros short.

what a terrible thing to happen. Has anyone experienced this?
the police of all people!

He is considering what he should do about this. But if he reports it he says he would be worried about what may happen, what kind of reaction he would expect!

Who would he report it to, the police:confused:
Tell him to hide his money somewhere on his body and only leave a token amount in his wallet.

This is a real shame that the police are thieves - this is what leads to real power for criminals when law enforcement is as corrupt as the crooks.

I am sure the way they rationalize it is they let him off easy (while benefiting themselves). After all they could have locked him up or planted drugs on him and he would have paid more than $300 in fines or bail and lost time as well.

I guess you could say looking at it that way, he paid the least amount possible with their tactics. In a way it was a win/win situation.

Not excusing them at all, it just could have turned out much worse for your friend.

He could report it to his country's embassy - but it won't do him much good without proof.
