She doesn't look like she can take a punch. I think I could whip her.

Seriously though, that's quite an accomplishment, but I felt more sorry for her than happy for her when she started crying and talking about how she substituted judo for marriage. Clearly there are some regrets there.

Judo / Marriage... why was it one or the other -- was there not room for both?

A culture where women can only reach a certain level? And it takes 30 years to get past that? Had she married she would not have reached this level. She chose her focus - I wonder how many people at 98 reach their life's goal.

It actually doesn't take much to be considered a 'difficult woman' -
that's why there are so many of us.

Yes Dennis - regrets, but had she married, she'd also have regrets, just different ones. Sometimes we have to choose and hope there are enough rewards in our choice to make the path worth following. I'm sure had it not been, she'd have changed her course.

True Sal, but IMO, the deeper regret would be for the lack of a human companion. It's hard to snuggle with a sport on lonely nights.

This woman's philosophy of gentleness, compassion, self-discipline is a lesson for us all.
she is a wise warrior indeed; The paradox of the warrior code is non-violence if at all
possible; If only the world would follow her example, we would have no wars!

Judo is very effective. I even once applied elementary judo moves in real-life fight against a major bully and beat him. I'll probably have my son study judo or aikido from an early age to ensure who is neither bullied nor a bully as he grows up.

That story is very moving, yet I don't subscribe to saintly sacrifice in order to get the most out of life, unless there really is no choice. I don't get why she wouldn't have had a choice. Why did one have to cancel the other out?

Bring granny on. I'll fight dirty before she embarrasses me in front of everyone. Quite a remarkable "little" lady actually. Infinite kudos to her.
