Which do you like better, dogs or cats?

Overwhelmingly for me, it's dogs. I'm just not a cat person. Once we had a mouse and the ex got a cat. I prefered the mouse.

A dog will pull you out of a fire. In a fire, a cat will be found dead, hiding under the bed.

    Totally dogs.

I have met few cats I really liked and love all the dogs except very few (like Dobermans).

    They are so the opposite.

When I got my bunny I thought, cool an 'apartment puppy' he can be in his cage when I am not here, etc.

Just the opposite - bunnies are much more like cats in that they really couldn't care less about you unless you have food in your hand. They are strictly on their own terms and can't be bothered.

The worst part is they like to eat electric cords so every outlet had to be barricaded (and then they love to figure out how to get through, around, or over it).

They refuse to obey - especially lops who are known for being stubborn.

Nonetheless I had my bunny for 10 years since he was a baby and I loved him until the day he died. (still do years later) However I would never have another one unless I had a large yard for a hutch etc.

    off topic...

Are you SURE about that? I would have thought a cat would RUN from a fire!

The only thing that surprises me about patricians experience with rabbits is that they eat cords. They ARE considered by some to be members of the rodent family, and many rodents ARE known for eating cords.

So then what surprises you? The bunny liked electric cords.

...However, there is some argument on whether bunnies are considered rodents - (but when friends would taunt me on how they loved to eat rabbits then I pulled the rodent card - 'well i would never sink so low to eat a rodent, you must be hard up'.

They do act kind of like rodents but not that much. I have had pet rats before when my son was little and the only problem with them was the baby (Al) would escape any cage and for some reason liked to go in the oven which was horrifying -- or at least tedious that you had to check where he was before cooking LOL. (until I put him in a fish tank with a cage on top of it)

I regretted parting with them but I caught Larry (rat) with a mouse between his front paws - he had peeled him just like a banana - so I thought no, I can't have him now because he is carnivorous...

Larry was the one in the cage on top of the fish tank - he was so smart he would go way over to the edge to pee so that he didn't hit the baby downstairs.

Yeah, I mean WHY would an animal gnaw on such a thing? Of course, MICE and RATS have been known to. My pet hamster once did. So I guess I have to put that in the OH WELL column!

      May be....
But, a good Beagle will chase down a rabbit for you and rabbits are mighty tasty!

And, I believe, cats are too stupid to run from a fire.

I like both, but I like cats better. Its true that cats are only loveable on their terms, but that suites me - dogs require far more attention.

But I've always had a dog and at least one cat, and I always will.

<-- that's Hambone. She is the funniest cat I've ever met, hence the name. Almost dog-like in personality. If more cats were like her, I think there would be a lot more cat lovers!

She's also my husband's (the dog lover's) cat. My cat is boring and needy. Just goes to show you.

Isn't it funny how the big dogs think they are lap dogs. My dog sits on my knee too, he has no idea how big he is.

I love and respect all animals - some more or less than others, but my preferred choice between cats and dogs must be the well trained dog as a well trained dog is so versatile that they can be trained to carry out some highly trained pursuits, like rescuing people in snow avalanches and people buried in landslides...

We have two cats, Maggie and Whisper.

Maggie was weaned a tad early and is quite a needy cat - annoying truthfully - but she is still fun to have around. Whisper on the other hand actually owns us, fortunately she allows us to live here too.

Maggie is also a little clumsy, she'll fall right off the couch, or your lap, while sleeping. Whisper likes to use Maggie for a punching bag - funny truthfully - because Maggie is twice Whisper's size and when Maggie has had enough, Whisper is destroyed.

The best part about our cats is traveling, leave 'em plenty of food and water, they'll take care of themselves

Dogs all the way for me... although on Friday we had a stunning Rag Doll kitten in the vet surgery where I work. I was definitely tempted! Spent quite a bit of time cuddling him.

Sheryl, your boy is just beautiful! My huge kelpie Guinness also sits on my lap. He does it one paw at a time - if I don't react to the first paw on my lap, he puts the second one up, and then he's right up there.

Patrician, I used to own a rabbit (under permit, because they're illegal in Queensland). She used to hop around my vet surgery and do what she liked.... until she chewed through the telephone cord! Clients couldn't call for appointments, which was really bad for business. After that, she was confined unless she was supervised.

Dogs will not be mocking you. They will, and have proven so time and again, try to get to you.

I personally know of several counts where a dog has literally died of lonliness after his/her master has died. They just become listless and refuse to eat.

My father told me of a dog where he grew up in eastern KY. that layed on his masters' grave until he died.

I know my cat is attached to me. She wails and rolls in excitement when she hasn't seen me for a few hours when I enter the house or a room. She jumps up and relentlessley buries her head into mine affectionately.

I got my cat expecting none of this. I chose a cat over a dog to avoid a connection. I expected a heartless animal to just roam around the house. That's not what I got. I love the little swine. Parting would be harsh to say the least.

I'm sure every cat owner - at least owners of indoor cats have deep a connection and understanding of them. Beneath their program of doing the things they would do in the wild they can actually have significant personality. When my family visit, most of the laughter is based upon the behaviour of my cat.

I grew up with dogs, and I have one as well. I have never had a cat, and I have a strange phobia of cats biting me (probably happened when I was really young and I blocked it out for something). My 9 year old daughter really wants a cat, but I sure have my reservations about it. I have met a few nice cats but most of them for the most part are unpredictable. I'm not a "cat person" or a "dog person" but I've always had a cat. Dogs are just too much work to take care of, and I've already got two children so I don't need more work.

My cat, on the other hand, requires very little maintenance. I could forget to feed her for a week and she'll feed on mice, rabbits, and birds. She's an outdoor cat and she's tough. I'm not very fond of indoor cats. I think they're pussies.

That's a common misperception. Cats are different in personality from dogs - but they have some charming qualities. Their independence is one - they don't constantly seek your attention (though they will at times).

Cats have unique and individual personalities. Each one has own likes and dislikes. Some are loving and cuddly and some more independent and playful. In personality cats are more like people than dogs are.

Little girls love cats and they suit each other well. If you get a kitten from the shelter or a young cat she will become part of the family just as a dog will. Then again, I've adopted a couple older cats to save them - and they were the sweetest animals and fit in like they'd been here for years.

I like both but cats will rule the world because they are allowed in apartments.

  • Between the two I would go for cats. Although cats may not pull you from fire they can alert you of it. It is very hard for a cat to fall on it's back. With such characteristics I can't imagine it cannot save, especially when well trained.

Cats are okay if all you want is something cute and fuzzy around the house.

The dog's natural sociology makes him more able to adapt to communicating on higher levels with you than a cat can. They can actually participate in your life more.

My dog is so much a part of my life. I wouldn't get as much exercise as I do without a little pal who's right there with his leash telling me it's time for a walk. When I go out gem hunting, he's right there to tell me if there is something wild and possibly dangerous around that I didn't hear. He can find our way back to the car when I didn't watch well enough where I was going. Together we can stave off animals who would have attacked if it had only been one of us out there. It's fun to have someone along that gets just as much of a charge out of exploring somewhere new as I do.

If someone comes over and my dog doesn't like him - I listen because he's always right. If I'm upset or sad, he knows and also knows just what to do to make me feel a little bit better. I know what to do to cheer him up, too.

While cats are kewl in their own way, I've never missed having one around. When I don't have a dog, I don't feel like a whole person.

Lcombs - dogs do have a sense of humor. Some more that others, just like people. Munchie was absolutely hilarious.

Dogs, by far. We are babysitting a cat and I can't imagine a more worthless animal. Even my cage of Madagascar hissing roaches is at least interesting to observe but this cat we have just eats, pukes, and craps. It costs a fortune in litter and food and there is no return whatsoever. It's 16 so I hope it dies soon.

I wish the poll had something saying I like 'em both equally. The first half of my life was all dogs, the second, all cats.

One of my cats comes when called, wags his tail like a dog, dances on his hind legs, runs to greet me when I come home, answers when I talk to him, goes to the store and brings back beer...

Okay, he's only got a learners permit so he doesn't actually go to the store on his own, but I swear he acts more like a dog than some dogs do.

Hands down dogs, many cats are self-absorbed. Dogs - truly are man's bestfriend they want to "please" their humans, cats could care less.

Overwhelmingly for me, it's dogs. I'm just not a cat person. Once we had a mouse and the ex got a cat. I prefered the mouse.

A dog will pull you out of a fire. In a fire, a cat will be found dead, hiding under the bed.
My family home includes cat and a dog, although my preference is for a dog as a dog can be more loyal and in my experience only more useful.

It would be dogs for me every time as dogs are so useful and versatile, including being used for guides dogs, identifying drugs, identifying explosives in warn torn areas of the globe, in contrast searching and finding people - skiers trapped in a snow avalanche, and when people trapped within the ruins of buildings following an earthquake/ hurricane/tsunami - obviously all these tasks are carried out by highly trained dogs.
