Faster Computer Speed

I have been IM for about 3 years now. My computer tends to run slow at times.

I know that there are 88 processes going on on my computer right now.

When I open task manager I know that ending the process of explorer.exe will shut down my desktop. I will not delete that one, but what other processes are safe to end.

I have Toshiba processes for my laptop computer
and Google Chrome processes. There are some other ones, but not sure which ones are safe to end.

Can anybody help?

You might watch for "memory leaks" some defective code causes applications to consume memory and not properly release it, increasing usage as time passes. My firefox 5 starts with under 200mb of ram use and will go up to over 1gig of ram use over time, restarting retrieves memory for a couple more hours.

They say Firefox 7, now in beta improves memory issues, about dam time.

usually "memory leaks" are caused by svchost.exe which happens when you are falling behind on security updates or you have some kind of adware on the system...in that case clean it...

also one thingyou can do to improve the performance is end the explorer.exe and then restart it so what this does is it clears all the start up processes clinging to the explorer and it becomes fresh and runs pretty god

If your computer is a few years old you may simply need a memory upgrade. But to better answer your questions it would be better if you told us the specifications of your computer.

If you are running Windows XP then you can have a look at this site that will tell you which services are safe to turn of and how to do it.

It depends what program you have running on your computer.. Sometimes people tend to have a lot of junk programs running in the background, I suggest you have a look and terminate the ones you don't need...

Also, if your computer is 3-4 years old you might want to buy a brand new computer...

Ironically, explorer.exe is usually the WORST! If you shut that down, and restart it, you usually will notice NO difference except a faster computer. SERIOUSLY!

Try switching to a Linux OS.
I've been running Ubuntu for a few months now and the speed is amazing.

You can set up a virtual windows to run any software that runs on windows.
You can also do a dual boot set up with windows and a Linux OS
Have listen also about Linux is working fast than Window, but i am also using window at this time, i think its more secure.
          Sorry, you think wrong
There's no way possible for windows to be more secure then a Linux OS at this time. Simply because all the viruses, adwares, malwares, etc. are designed to attack windows OS's.

Google Chrome is very fun to use and it has got all the latest features in it but i guess it would be better for you to use Firefox instead of chrome when you have so many applications running at the same time... May be i guess chrome gets stuck when there are lot of applications running at the same time but i guess there will be no problem with firefox at all !
