Flying car...---unbelievable

It is really a great accomplishment but in my opinion it was inevitable even this kind of invention. We have discovered very much in the past 20 years but we destroyed more also.

cute! I never would have thought of such a small wing. The again, the suspended wing, and warping, make it larger in less space. And wing warping. I mean I've heard that few, if any, can actually fly the write brothers plane, because the warping is difficult to work. *I* wonder how much weight it can carry. and do you think it is approved for road use and flight?

and it goes faster on the ground than in the air! THAT may be a first right there!

WELL, it IS surprising it goes so fast with wheels like that, but the mileage is realistic. It is SMALL, probably light, and probably has a good engine, like for a motorcycle. You would think mileage would be a given. But it isn't as safe, and you can't carry as much. In fact, the idea of using this as some sort of ambulance doesn't really make sense. I DOUBT it is street legal.

Good first step. The commercial version should have vertical take-off and landing because right now, you can't really use it on a regular road with live traffic.

the next version couldn't have VTOL! the wing couldn't support the engines in any way, so it would need one front and back, and the props would be so big as to be impractical. Even using the A10 method wouldn't really be doable on the average street.

What makes this neat is that it is light, and the wing is compact. You start adding lots of weight, or go to a traditional wing, and you start having the traditional problems.

(A VTOL would need a lot of power - this probably is murder in the wind too...

Interesting Season, What does the FAA say about the helicopter use in the States?
The inventor mentioned this once in the clip classed as a helicopter, able to land in fields and not a runway.....this would be really unrestricted in that sense, but you would still need a pilots licence. what if it became Christmas present of the decade in the USA and further afield?
Cluttered skies perhaps?

I don't know, but the FAA has a number of rules on what is needed to fly. And the more control you want, the more powerful, and the larger, the MORE they regulate. The SAME is true of CARS, though they are regulated LOCALLY! My first car had these little flaps on the headlights. GRANTED it lead to assumptions and questions and was a conversation starter but you know what the OFFICIAL story was? The top of the lights was about 1" lower than that allowed by road regulations. So when the lights were turned on, the flaps moved 1" higher to make it legal. The only other ways to accomplish that would be to change the slope on the car, or get rid of part of the trim. The lights worked fine without them going up, etc.... so all the assumptions were certainly WRONG.

In the US they have a LOT of regulations.

I think at this point it is probably in the power glider category - it's not fixed wing - there are some flying restrictions for sure, but you don't need a pilots rating for an ultralight like that...
I think he may have been referring to the fact that they both can land outside of an airport...

CLEARLY! But I DOUBT this would actually qualify as an ultralight. But he even said, and the video showed, that you could align this with a road, slow down, and the car would just land right where it should. Flip a switch, and BANG, you are OFF! Of course, it WOULD be a good idea to retract the wing, and they don't show that. I have seen flying cars before also. Those that have a real wing like this have a larger fixed wing. Most require you to set it up OUTSIDE the car. It would not be legal to land them on a freeway and, if you did, there could be a big crash.

What makes THIS unusual is the footprint, rigidness, and transition. Oh, and it IS tinier than most. At least one IS street legal, I believe, with a car that looks more normal, and the wings almost as a trailer, but it's impractical.

There ARE reasons why none of them have, excuse the pun, taken off! Expense, Size, Real utility, runways, and regulations.

Yeah, - but this one is cool! I've seen 2 man power glider rigs but they were just cages...this one is actually finished to a higher degree to make an enclosed cockpit, so I'm curious how that might change it's status in the eyes of the FAA...that's why I was thinking it somewhere between a powerglider and almost ultralight. and that bar is not structural - it only deploys...
40mi/hr won't get you to Flagstaff (if you wanted to go...:rolleyes: anytime soon -and in a head wind you may NEVER get there...) But if you wanted to, you can use it for a swamp boat!
But It sure would have been killer in the San Francisco area - kiss those bridges and backups goodbye! Just fly across the bay!

AND - if it can do 0-60 in under 4 secs like they say...you can blow people away 2 ways!

Yeah, at the moment it is only good for getting to some hard to reach places, and avoiding MASSIVE traffic you know about in advance. Can it even handle a bag of groceries?

I wouldn't want the flying car going mainstream, but that would be fun launching that thing off the dunes at Silver Lake in Michigan, flying out over Lake Michigan & the dunes.

As for the hardware, it's a lithe, 900lb vehicle reminiscent of a dune buggy. Its creators say that it can accelerate from 0-60 in under four seconds, though its airspeed is limited to 40MPH. Its flight feature depends on a large, stowable glider wing and a rear-mounted propellor for thrust. The Maverick Sport should be available for purchase in time for AirVenture 2011, a yearly air show held in July. The price? A cool 80 grand.

It is a nice little fantasy but in reality, millions of "hovercars" and such that individuals actually controlled would never work, people are idiots.Imagine all of the clunkers you see driving around right now, broke down on the side of the road, now imagine the same thing except these clunkers can fly, sometimes..... would you want to be around when the clunker that joe dirt is holding together with duct tape and bailing wire decides to fall apart?
