English Football Discussion (Soccer for the Yanks)

It's suprising there isn't a football topic on here, so I thought I'd start one. I love my football, and during the season my weekends tend to revolve around sport.

So who is your team, and how are they doing this year so far and what are your expectations??

I'm a Man United fan (and I'm actually from Manchester ) and looking forward to the big one tomorrow!

Currently watching Liverpool beating Bolton as I type this which is a bit of a let down for my weekend, but I'll be over it by tomorrow when we thump Arsenal .

So if this thread gets enough responses and interest I might create one each weekend to discuss the latest Premier League action. Or at least bump this up.

    I'm a yank, don't get soccer.

Imagine a circus juggler running around, except juggling with his feet.

Or it's like doing an Irish jig dance, except with a ball.

Had to look up Irish jig.., .....jesus christ...,

Yeah, it's hard being a 'real' Man Utd fan. Some of us ARE from there, and we supported United pre-Ferguson when things weren't so rosy.

Re: Arsenal. Quite sad about their decline. I have a lot of respect for Wenger - a great footballing mind and a real gent. I miss the days when Highbury was the toughest away game of the season.

And remember the '1-0 to the Arsenal' days and their offside trap?

Danielle, I am feeling a little sorry for Arsenal, just a wee bit, but it has been coming!! Wenger needs to get some big names in and sharpish otherwise they'll be struggle to finish above Spurs, Villa, Everton and any suprise packages!

So what do you think for the top 4? I think we'll retain the title again, but it'll be close.

      1. United 2. City 3. Chelsea 4. Liverpool

Yes, some people may find it hard to believe but Manchester is split red and blue! It is in my town anyway. And I am actually too young to have supported United pre Ferguson (he became manager a month after I was born), however my dad has been there through the glory years, and I would have been too! lol.

Gonna be a good, interesting season! And Barca still remain the team to aspire to.

Aston Villa. Best team in the world. Pete slaps his thigh laughing.

Seriously, we're going to whup your arses this year, the lot of ya! (Wishful thinking) - One can live in hope.

Hey, at least we're always in the Premiership not like some of these teams that get relegated. Hey old man! Charlton Athetic, where are you these days? (Just having a dig at my father a football fanatic.)

          Oi!

All I need now is for a Southampton fan to show up today. I knew we should have deliberately capitulated against Nacional and escaped from the nightmare called the Europa League - it's going to be humiliation all the way and it's going to cost us points in the Championship, but I suppose Hong Kong Fooey will manage to get some dough out of it to pay his fines.

It's no fun for us blue-noses, watching a bunch of free-transfers trying to keep it together while last year's team shows up on MOTD each week, scattered around other teams in the Premiership.

On the bright side though, at least Pete got lumbered with Big Eck

Oh my word!! Never saw that coming!! Arsenal were extremely weakened, but 8 goals banged past them?? Rooney hat-trick, always nice to see! He's a great player, no one can deny that.

Arsenal have some serious ground to make up. They're in a worse place than Liverpool were the other year, but I don't get the enjoyment out of seeing Arsenal in this trouble.

    Finally a thread in here!

I sometimes feel like I'm the only football fan in the US, so I will come here a lot!

My team is Fulham, as I have always been a Clint Dempsey fan, all the way back to his early MLS days. He has proven himself as the best American footballer in the best league in the world, so I have supported Fulham ever since his transfer in 2006-7.

I love the EPL because of the time difference for me; here in the US, I can wake up and start watching football right away.

If anyone ever wants to talk EPL or MLS (yes I follow MLS lol, we are improving) Then hit menup on pm.

Bumping this back up now we have some Premiership football back after two weeks off for the internationals.

Feel free everyone to discuss your delights or frustrations at your teams this weekend.

Quite an interesting weekend given its the first lot of football since the transfer window closed and it was a busy deadline day!

So how well will Arsenals new look side fair? Which Manchester club will score most goals this week? And will Joey Barton get sent off in his first game for QPR against his old team Newcastle.

Great first half by all accounts, 3-0 up and Rooney bagging two goals! I love him!! haha.

Good result today for Stoke beating Liverpool 1-0 amid some controversy about penalty decisions!

As expected Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs all get wins today whilst Everton and Villa play out a draw.

Me and my mates' 6 match accumulator pulled up 4 winners and 2 draw! So right now I aint very happy with Sheff United and Bradford for letting us down!!

And to respond to SloanJim above, those teams need to watch out for Stoke I reckon. They could be a suprise package this year. Everton always manage to somehow find around 7th place even with their limited resources and despite losing Arteta still have some decent players in their ranks. And of course Villa may also pose a threat despite their poor campaign last year, they've got off to a decent start.

Sunderland look like they will struggle following the loss of their top goalscorers lately (What the hell is Gyan going to the UAE for?? ). And I think QPR will just survive, but the other two promoted teams Swansea and Norwich will go back down with Wigan or Blackburn the 3rd team for the drop.

So what's everyones thought's on this weekends action? Blackburn vs Arsenal could be a huge game for both managers, more so for Steve Kean than Wenger but you never know.

The big match of the weekend is Manchester United vs Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea will be determined to show that it's not just the Manchester clubs battling for the title come the end of the season. United will want to continue their dominance.

So give us you're thoughts, and that goes for the lower leagues too if you follow a team down there.

Will Steve Kean still be in a job this time tomorrow? Will Wayne Rooney score a third hat-trick in a row? And who will win between Spurs and Liverpool to stamp their mark on the European Cup places come end of season?

Great result for Fulham that! Happy with United's win but Chelsea had so many chances!! Still, Nani came up with some magic and boom, what a goal that was!!

Watched the Arsenal-Blackburn game, was great to watch and a result Kean was desperate for and has probably saved him losing his job!! Worrying times for Arseanl fans though :-\

Agreed, but I feel we're getting that bit closer! At least this season our football has been free-flowing and attractive. People last season were saying we wasn't playing good football, just grinding out the wins. This year we're demolishing everything in sight!! Total stark contrast.....and all with a bunch of kids!

The word Football makes an illusion of a spherical ball with black and white check print.Football was founded in England in 1863, then the rules of this game was evolved by the mentioned year and these rules are perfect till now no changes were made in these rules. This game is the most famous and loving game around the world, though it is been watched also across the globe.
