Well after all the things that happened in 2008 ( breaking my back and ending up with a DVT in my left leg ) I found out on December 30 that I have Celiac Disease. I can no longer eat anything that contains Glutens. This is a life changing thing for me and my family. I can deal with this as I have with the other things but the hard thing to deal with is the fact that this disease is Genetic and there is a possibility that my children may also have it. I don't post often but,I do like to follow what other people other are saying. There is a multitude of information on the internet and also support groups of people with this disease but I still feel like I am in limbo.
Most of the food is pretty bad so far and is two to three times the cost of regular food. I am in construction so eating lunch out was an every day thing. Now I have to pack my lunch everyday for the rest of my life. Boy the looks I get when I enter a restaurant carrying my lunch box with my co-workers really makes me feel like the odd man out. I guess what I'm asking is this is there anyone else in this forum that has this misfortune and how are you dealing with it?
If this bums you out I appoligize.
Thanks; Gary

    Hi Gary,

    Sorry to hear about that.

If you don't mind me asking, do you, and any of your immediate relatives (who may also have celiac disease), stutter or experience any similar speech problems?

    Tommy.

      Hi Thom
That I know of no one in my family has a stuttering issue. I do know that all first line family members need to be tested for Celiac. I don't know a lot about this yet but some symptons associated with this are mal nutrition, bloating, gas, constipation and with me intestinal pain. Until recently most of this was diagnosed as IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrom) As I find out more I'll let you know.
      Thanks

I see: Please excuse my nosiness; I read somewhere that a disproportionate number of Celiacs suffer from stuttering (or maybe it was a disproportionate number of Sutterers suffer from celiac disease... I can't remember which now!).

    Hi Gary,

I'm gluten intolerant also. I found out about 3 years ago. It was a shock and
challenge at first, but now it doesn't bother me at all.

What you should know is that there are more people who have celiac disease than are lactose intolerant, they just don't do anything about it and choose to keep eating the things that don't agree with them.

I'd rather eat what's healthy for me than to eat something that will make me sick.

I've always brought my lunch to work with me, it just takes planning. I usually cook everything I'm going to eat, on the weekends and freeze it. Before work, I'd just pull out what I need and put it in my lunch pal.

Once you get the hang of eating a certain way, I'm sure it won't bother you as much. For instance, you can use rice flour to make cakes and cookies. Whole foods has wonderful gluten free snacks and meals. Trader Joes is another fabulous place to shop that's less expensive than Whole Foods or grocery stores. Nowadays, more and more grocery stores have designated space for healthy food items, which include gluten free foods.

There are so many different tricks.

    I hope this helped.

      Hi Christie
I have found some products in Walmart, Meijer, Kroger and also a health food store called The Raisin Rack. I have also found a support Group in Newark Ohio that meets every other month. I have also joined a Yahoo Group called Silly Yaks that sends out information on any food that you may have doubts about. I am also finding foods that are less disgusting to swallow.
Good luck with your food issues. Sounds as though you have it under control.
