Seems like this girl turned 121 over the weekend.

World's Oldest Person Found Thriving in the Amazon : TreeHugger

If she had retired at 65, she would have had nothing to do for 56 years.

Obviously the retirement age has to be pushed up to 80 soon.

    She doesn't look a day over 115.

Actually, she doesn't look as old as I thought she would.

She looks alert and aware, and much better than most of the old timer photos. (like mine ) She doesn't even have gray hair, isn't in a wheelchair. It's inspiring. It did cross my mind that the story was fake, but it seems real.

Surprising to see her still manages to stand straight and firm in front of the camera with her age. She is really remarkable. A record breaking human health and living milestone. I wonder how her birth certificate look like now? I may not be surprised if it's carved in wood, stone or piece of broad leaf from the amazon. lol . I would be very lucky to have reached that age if be given a chance.

In many ways I'd agree it is, Lloyd. Civilization has a long way to go before it's civilized. Still, I wouldn't want to trade places with her for more than a few days. I'm kind of fond of my modern conveniences.

Pereira credits her long-life to an active, healthy lifestyle, in addition to a diet rich in locally grown meats, fruits, and vegetables gathered in the forests around her home -- free of the extra salt, sugar, and preservatives so commonly found in foods around the world. Her all-natural diet, along with frequent walks around town, has allowed Pereira to thrive while others, many years her junior, do not.
Well that shows being a vegetarian or vegan isn't the healthiest way to go.

No - but raw milk and lack of pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormomes in meat and pollution in the environment are definitely not doing us any justice. It would be nice to be able to find somewhere to live so naturally. All the efforts to restore the natural biomes are not going to do us a whit of good until we rid the planet of crap like MONSANTO that does nothing but kill. I'm betting she doesn't have a cell phone tower in the area either. That microwave grid just plain scares me. I don't want anything to do with being microwaved to death.

apparently there are about half dozen enclaves around the world where people live to a ripe old age. At the foot of the Tibet mountains for one, Georgia.
traditionally they eat home grown produce, obtain the mineral rich water which flows from the mountains and live an active life.

look at the people on the Japanese island OKINAWA. The Okinawan's most significant cultural tradition is known as hara hachi bu, which translated means eat until you're only 80% full.

In a typical day they only consume around 1,200 calories, about 20% less than most people in the UK. Culturally it is a million miles from attitudes in a lot of Western societies, where all-you-can-eat meal deals are offered in restaurants on most high streets.

There are more centenarians there than any western civilization.

There was a woman in France who lived to be 122.

She smoked for 96 years, drank wine and ate 2 1/2 pounds of chocolate a week.

Put that in yur pipe and smoke it...

I've seen stories like this before. They're often used to justify hard living just as stories like the one Lloyd posted are used to justify clean living. Both justifications leave out an assortment of important contributing factors, like genetics, beliefs, and environment for example. It's never as simple as those with an agenda want us to believe.

IMHO, whatever makes you happy will help you live longer.

These are both extremes, and as most of us know, there is always an exception to the rule.

I just get a little tired of people who spend their lives counting every calorie and being ultra self- conscious, telling me that's the only way to live.

        T'aint...

I'm with you 100% on that. A lot of those folks who spend so much of their time being ultra self-conscious worry themselves to an early death, if you ask me. And for those who don't, they lose a lot of "just living" by replacing it with all their fretting.

Live and let live, to each their own. I've been known to give an earful to those who try too hard to tell me how I should live. Usually one superficial look at the life of someone trying to tell you how to live is enough to convince you that they're having enough trouble running their own life that you don't want them running yours.
