    Bzzzzz = wrong answer.

Calories don't have much to do with it as people are led to believe. Do you actually think we huff down that many more calories now than we did 70 years ago? Nadda.

There's a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with calories that are making people seriously fat. Not going to give them all away because I have an ebook (need to change the crap cover job I did on it before I really tork it into sales, LMAO) -- but lets just put one on the line for ya just for grins, shall I?

Antibiotics. Know how many antibiotics people are eating? They are even in the meat we eat - fed to cows. Incidentally - they aren't fed to cows to keep them well as people are told. They are fed to cows to make them fat. People have been fed so many of the things that they are in most people's drinking water now. Yum.

If it is over-eating that is making people fat - just the implications of that last sentence above should put em off their wheaties for a freaking month.

That may be one of the side effects of antibiotics. But, I understand it, after watching the documentary Food, Inc., antibiotics are given to cows because they harbor a lot of the e-coli bacteria due to being fed corn instead of grass. Cows are physiologically made-up to eat grass. On a grass diet, cows don't have this e-coli problem. Why do they feed cows corn? Economics, I guess.

Sal, you should be teaching in universities.

In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle which exposed the filthy practices of the meat industry. The American public was outraged, leading to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act.

Could a similar book exposing the truth of the current meat industry and what is being fed to animals possibly capture the public's imagination and condemnation? And, if not, is that not in itself an indication of why obesity is an epidemic?
Ironically, meat of 1906 would have probably been superior to meat nowadays. For one, it was all organic. You have to pay a premium to get organic meat nowadays. The Meat Inspections Act has been seriously diluted over the years and is now totally toothless, unfunded, and ineffectual.

I think you are right in asking if the public has been numbed. I don't think a book would have much impact nowadays. The movie Food, Inc. exposes the ugly practices of the meat industry. Whatever ugliness you can imagine, it is probably ten times worse than that. What effects has the film had on the public? Basically, squat, from what I can see.

Oprah Winfrey once devoted a show to exposing ugly sides of the meat industry: http://www.mad-cow.org/~tom/oprah.html. The meat industry sued her and there were a lot of court battles. Oprah eventually won against the lawsuit. What effect has it had on the unhealthy practices of the meat industry? Squat, apparently.

Table manners has nothing to do with it

That's right, though - if your metabolism is cranked up to high, calories burn. It's just that there are a lot of things that knock that metabolism out of the water. I was seriously surprised when I did the research for my report about some of the stuff that can keep you from burning calories.

Yes, I also agree that it totally depends on your metabolism that why you are not getting fat even you are eating a lot of junk food. However, its good for you to continue exercising and to improve your eating habits.

    Thanks Thunderbird

Well crap about antibiotics. I got a bad infection after surgery, was taking antibiotics for several days then in the hospital 4 days on IV antibiotics hope that didn't make me gain weight

I don't eat pork, red meat, dark meat, or pasta. Hope since I'm not a big meat eater I don't get a lot of that junk...but I do eat chicken and I know they fatten up chickens too Maybe I should be a vegetarian. There are organic, no antibiotic meats, they are more expensive though and I like to order chicken tikka masala from the indian restaurant. Biology wasn't nice enough to give me eat whatever you want and still be skinny genes Damn biology it's evil.

I decided to do a vegetarian diet for fun and that was probably the most effective diet I tried. As soon as I started eating meat again I started packing the pounds back on.

Simple, truthful answer. Complex to put into action. Everyone's body is different. And most people have mental and emotional issues about food.

Everyone has an opinion about this topic too. That's why I have only created ONE website in the diet niche and was glad when I was able to sell it off. When someone gave me the all-caps treatment scolding me about saying eating popcorn on a diet was "leading people astray" I said "I give up!" Not worth it.

LMAO - they probably eat popcorn like I do - soaked in butter with mega loads of Parmesan cheese on it.

I have one ebook on the subject - but it doesn't prescribe a diet. It just talks about all the other factors that keep people from losing weight - keeps them from burning fat. There's a lot reasons that we store fat instead of burning it. I do discuss foods to an extent, but not in the realms of dieting.

To be honest - I don't believe in diets. I believe in cranking your metabolism into high gear. It would drive me crazy to diet. I eat healthy most of the time but if there's a cheesecake sitting in front of me, I'm gonna scarf it.

I love food and I eat extremely heavy for someone 5'6" and 110 lbs. I can stuff it down spoon for spoon with a pretty hefty man and not blink. But I observe all the factors outside of food calories that make your food to burn instead of turning into storage fat. My food burns so well that I always eat extra if I want to stay up later than usual. As long as I keep stuffing it down, I don't get tired until near dawn.

I have an easy diet plan. I just lost 30 lbs in a month and a half. I don't eat breakfast I drink an ensure for lunch with a banana and a full one course meal for dinner. Then I drink another ensure around 9pm. The breakfast and lunch seems hard, but after a week your body adjusts and Im not hungry at all during the day and feel great.

I drink water throuout the day and do not have sugar at all. No soda people! And I never exercised at all. if I did I bet I could have easily lost another 10-15 lbs..

Thanks Dennis - I'll have my tech do it. He gets a % of my sales for that kinda stuff. Does a hell of a great job, too. I just have to get him a pic an he does the rest.

Push button diet? There's this guy you might be able to look up that can give you one. His name is Pavlov.

Take that little doggie of yours for a couple extra walks every day, Dennis - I'm betting you sit too long at one time. It's not just about a long walk every day - it's about moving often enough, too. Set a timer if you have to - 50 minutes - then take 10 to walk around, stretch (stay away from the fridge unless you are going to eat a food that burns calories instead of accumulating them - celery, bananas, etc.) Might not do ya a pound a day, but you sure will notice a difference after a short time.

Computers are making people way too sedentary. And sedentary and thin or trim don't go together very well at all.

Yes, healthy food and exercise is important, but it is HOW you exercise. It's not as simple as taking a walk for fifteen minutes per day. If you want to increase your metabolism, you've got to be walking for a longer period of time each day. Then put some cardiovascular exercise in there and, over time, increase your workout times to 60 minutes and 90 minutes. That's how you increase your metabolism.

I think the to lose weight effectively is to exercise least half an hour daily. Plus eat healthy food. (not only vegetables and fruits) You have to eat meat as well. The best are chicken, turkey and fish. And is good to take food supplement what helps to lose weight. That's it!

While I understand that everybody is different, here is my own personal
experience with weight gain and loss.

As a teen, I could eat anything and did. I ate like a pig and was still 120
pounds soaking wet. I was also very active.

Move ahead to my mid to late 20s after I got married.

I had an office job, hardly exercised and ate as much as when I was a teen.

I blew up to 150 pounds.

Today, after developing intolerance to a lot of food, I now live on whole grain
cereal in the morning, a turkey sandwich and green salad for lunch, chicken
and vegetables for dinner and 4 homemade oatmeal cookies and lots of tap
water during the day. I don't exercise one little bit but am back down to
      120 pounds.

In order to maintain the same weight that I was at as a teen, I had to cut
my food intake by 75% at least.

I'm not a doctor or a diet expert so I don't know what this means, but if I
had to guess I'd say it's a combination of burning calories and how much
food we eat. The faster your metabolism, the more you can eat and stay
thin as long as you still get enough exercise and burn enough calories.

I don't eat organic stuff and I don't stay away from the so called antibiotic
injected poultry and yet I don't weigh a ton either. And I seriously doubt at
age 53 that my metabolism is that fast anymore.

Not sure what all this means, but I'm pretty sure that if I started eating
Ring Dings and Yodels again and scarfed down a gallon of soda a day
in addition to the Milky Ways and 3 Musketeers I ate on a regular basis,
not to mention the Italian subs that I practically lived on, I think it would
be safe to say that I'd weigh more than 120 pounds today.

So eat less and you'll weigh less. How much less will depend on your
metabolism and how active you are.

At least that's what seems to work for me.

I'm not a doctor so take this 2 cents for what it's worth to you.
